A number of years ago I stumbled upon a Hoogland recording of Alkan at a remainder sale and I purchased it. I was fascinated. I listened to it a number of times and the next time that I went to visit my mother, I took it with me. My mother, who was then a little over 100 had been playing the piano since she was seven or eight was charmed, and said she had never heard anything quite like it. I told her that I thought Alkan sounded a little like Liszt, but she disagreed. In any event I was not allowed to take the disc home with me! I wasn't able to retrieve my CD until after my mother died; but now it is part of fifty plus CD recordings of Alkan in my collection.

This song always makes me think of my grandma. She used to play it on the piano all the time when I was a kid. I remember one time, when I was about 10 years old, I was feeling really sad. My grandma sat down at the piano and played this song for me. She told me that it was her favorite song, and that it always made her feel happy. I listened to her play, and I started to feel better. I'll never forget that moment. Thank you for sharing this beautiful performance, Stanley. It brought back a really fond memory.

@@panditgangadharvmonshastri8222 By this logic it's normal that 90% of the internet dwell on it to take advantage of the notions that come with anonymity. If you consider what happens to a screw when you use a butter knife to unscrew it instead of the screw driver intended for the job... Well it's not too difficult to see that there is a wrong way to use tools beyond basic opinion and speculation. Quite literally most people are killing each others brain cells rather than making good use of the internet. @@andrewpereira9748 if the butter knife loosened a screw, and if the task was to loosen a screw, the task is completed, maybe the tool used was not highly efficient but efficient/effective indeed. Of course there are efficient and inefficient ways to operate tools, i agree. The inefficiency of certain methodologies are often abstracted, thus the very basic "trial method" is followed and results noted down. In our case the tool will go through trails and trials until the world as we know catches up to it.

Came across the name Alkan while reading a biography of Chopin. Can't believe his music isn't as well known as any of the 19th-c greats, such as Liszt or Brahms. I have not listened to everything on this playlist. But what I have heard so far is simply stunning! Bravo Brilliant.

@@tawnlr6664 Bought the Brilliant CD set and have listened to it all. I would rank Alkan just below Liszt and Chopin as a composer of keyboard music. But his invention and originality probably exceeded theirs, and indeed those of most other 19th-century composers. Alkan is not always brilliant but he is never less than interesting. The performances here help a lot - they are uniformly excellent. Would definitely recommend Alkan, and this collection in particular, to the curious music fan.

@@sanguinefan1734 thank you so much for your reply! I agree with a lot of what you say...I also think Alkan is up there with Liszt and Chopin, each of them having their diff strengths and in the case of Alkan, it's inventiveness and breadth. Probably exhausted the possibilities of the piano more than any other piano composer, sometimes to a less than pleasant effect but always thought-provoking.

@@user-lj1sc9bs4t I couldn't disagree with any of that (assuming my Google Translate is accurate!) I have since listened to Alkan's organ music on CD and other works of his on Spotify. Of the three composers, Liszt, Chopin and Alkan, I probably enjoy Chopin most of all. But, as you say, it is invidious to classify any one of them as the best. It just seems odd to me that Alkan is still pretty unknown. I have listened a lot to other neglected 19th century composers like Louis Spohr. While they wrote lovely music their omission today from the list of greats does not seem strange at all. An awful lot of stuff from that period, not just Spohr's, is just banal and rightfully forgotten (IMO). But Alkan!?

Charle-Valentin Alkan o Morhange. PS. There is some sort of "secundity" in these pieces. Difficult to perform as they may be, they do resemble tunes of other composers a lot. Chopin, Beethoven, Grieg, you name it...

It's good that youtube expands people's exposure to music, but it's also sad, in a way, to see so many comments by people who'd never heard of Alkan. The musical riches which poured out of Europe between (say) 1650 and 1910 were so vast that many of its "lesser" lights are forgotten. Everybody has heard of Bach, Mozart and Brahms - but Buxtehude, Vincenzo Bellini, Delibes ? Not so much ... no recording company is going to make millions of dollars out of introducing people to their music ...
@eb9389
@eb9389 4 года назад
It is also sad that most people don't know diddly about classical music which has been around for at least 700-800 years and has stood the test of time more than any other type of music. The world in general has lost so much culture since WW II and the 1950s.

@SamuraiSx19

not acctually. it sounds just liek that time - Chopin also was neighbour of Alkan, they played together and composed at some point of Chopin's stay in Paris, so we can't say with sureness whose influence is in that music which we call now --Chopin like sound-- just because he was promoted from that time to nowdays and has been stamped in history) so listening Alkan and saying -Chopin like- is discusssion like statment~

Oh I see. In many videos of Chopin's music people were bashing him and saying that Alkan was the true genius and was overshadowed by the flashy composers like Chopin,Liszt, Schumann, etc. Now I can say that Alkan was just a regular composer with no real understanding of musical language. His compositions lack fine and tasteful harmonic ideas, and his melodies are a bit dull. With all due respect to the guy and to those who like him, he was good! But he was no genius. Of course music is art, and art is subjective. But man, there's a reason why he is not regarded as one of the greats.

Borodin To be honest, I think pieces like Le Preux and Scherzo Focoso are not very high quality, compared to most of his output. Maybe Yui Morishita will make a great recording of Le Preux and breathe new life into it, since he is the greatest Alkan pianist in my opinion.
@felorobotoscope
@felorobotoscope 6 лет назад
When you say " not very high quality " you mean in terms of your appreciation of the piece and not the difficulty of execution, right ? In that case I might agree about Scherzo Focoso but I do like Le Preux. I agree abouy Morishita, the man's skills are insane and he's the only one to my knowledge who can play the most difficult pieces at the intended tempo. I also do like Hamelin's interpretations on some pieces and Ringeissen's recording of the op.35 etudes.

@@p-y8210 Alkan and Chopin lived side by side, I believe at the Place Saint Georges in Paris. In any case they were very close friends, and it is obvious that Georges Sand, referencing her letters, was very fond of Alkan. Apparently he and Chopin both had great senses of humor and would often attend the cabarets together. A great example of this, which I believe is posted on youtube, is Alkan's hilarious Funeral March for a Parakeet, which he wrote at the death of Rossini's beloved pet bird.
