All 17 Tuna Species - A Comprehensive Coverage

As I’ve discussed on the channel here before, Tuna are some of the ocean's most amazing predators, and ones that often go overlooked, given so many of us routinely eat them out of small cans, which has given the impression that these animals are pretty small, sardine sized even, when that could not be further from the case.
Atlantic bluefins for example can weigh around 250 kilograms, though the largest of them can get up to an astonishing 684 kilograms, bigger than a typical cow, and nearly as much as 10 whole people. Of course, Tuna aren’t just limited to these massive animals, as there are also a range of smaller and also very interesting species that often go uncommented on. So, to rectify that, I’ll be covering all of the known Tuna species here in this video so all of this information is in one place, and with around 17 in total to go over, there’s a lot of ground, or in this case, water, to cover. I hope you enjoy.
All of the great tuna art in the thumbnail was done by Rohan Chakravarty. Please check out more of his work here if you want:

Hey guys, it's certainly been a while! I've been focussing very heavily on getting my uni work done these last few months, so apologies that there was such a gap in content between the end of March to now. This was a very big project to work on for me ( I haven't made a video longer than this since the end of 2020 funnily enough with the video I did on the Haast's eagle), and although it's been very time-consuming and made my channel go on a big hiatus, I'm so glad I could finally get it out so that you guys can learn more about these amazing fish! :) -Henry

I was fortunate enough to catch 42 Giant Bluefin Tuna on rod and reel ( all over 400lbs ) in South Africa, with the biggest still an all Africa record to this day ..1047 lbs....I also held the world all tackle record for longfin tuna ( 72 lbs ) for several years....I also owned the only tuna cannery in South Africa, canning, Albecore, yellowfin and skipjack.. .

There needs to be more videos like this! I love videos that do a deep dive into a group of animals exactly as approached in this video. There are so many groups of animals that could be explored in this fashion from every major family (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, all invertebrates).

I'm more than willing to provide more! In the works include videos on the Echidna and Kiwi, so I look forward to getting them out down the line. The most surprising thing when making videos on these topics is how little they've been covered by other people, so I'm really happy to be filling the niche. A lot of people certainly seem to like it! :)

@@HenrythePaleoGuy That sounds awesome! Most people don’t even know the New Guinea echidnas (long-beaked echidnas) exist, so it’d be great if you brought them to the spotlight on here, especially considering that most if not all of the three species are critically endangered and flat-out awesome. That certainly applies to the five kiwi species too! Most people probably think there’s only one species of kiwi and echidna (and the same can be said of numerous, numerous other groups; in some cases, few people know that some of the lesser known and reclusive animal groups even exist [colugos, agoutis, New Guinea dasyurids, chevrotains, plethodontid and hynobiid salamanders, tinamous, hyraxes, beaked whales, neotropical wood turtles, South American didelphids, and multiple catfish genuses, just to name a few of the many examples]). I’m glad you’re taking it upon yourself to occupy this important niche! I commend you in your efforts to popularize/bring to the public’s attention some of the fascinating extant animal groups which are largely unknown to the average person.

Henry, thank you so much for this great comparative video, it is much appreciated! I have a request: apart from location, what are the differences between what the Australian's call Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomoru commerson), and the fish that Americans know as King Mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla)? Are there any exterior differentiations to help tell them apart? Thanks, Owen.

What Tuna species have paired veins & arteries (“counter current heat exchange”)? Interesting because these species will have exceptionally low omega 3 contents, not the species you want to buy for brain & heart health! From Sahar & Soltan, “Levels of Omega 3 fatty acids in Australian Seafood” (Asia Pac J Clin Nutr 2008) Southern Bluefin Tuna, Omega 3 is lower than tropical species Coral Trout or Barramundi! Seemingly it’s all about maintaining blood circulation & our cold water species have evolved to have high levels of omega 3s whereas Bluefin Tuna & other tuna species (?) do it through paired veins & arteries.
