loved the original phantsy star games played and beaten them all i wished i kept my original Sega master system with the games but at the time i moved on to the Sega Genesis. still own all my original Sega Genesis games with the boxes and etc
Same AF. Sincerely hope that after the 2d/retro-style “Sonic Superstars” makes Sega a bunch of money this upcoming holiday season, they dig back into their retro sega ages catalog and bring FANTASY ZONE 2DX to the switch That M2 remake (originally from PS2 Sega Ages Vol. 33) was also known as “3d Fantasy Zone 2W / Link Loop Land” on 3DS. The switch port of the OG fantasy zone was great on switch… now we need that M2 remake of Fantasy Zone 2 !
They're sitting on a goldmine with that era of their arcade games, including all the Saturn games from around then. I know Saturn emulation is nigh on impossible but they should really give it a good go. Those games would sell like hotcakes because the majority of them can only be played by buying an actual sega saturn and the game CDs. Because of the aforementioned difficulty with emulating the console. I've never tried to see if the arcade versions are emulator friendly, with MAME or whatever. But damn, Virtua Racing managed to work as a port, though mind you for that they literally remade the game from the ground up as it was easier than porting it, but Virtua Racing is a far simpler and shorter game than their other arcade racers from the mid 90s so it's not easy to just go "ok we'll just remake all these games". But I hold out hope that Sega will wake up finally, give all the money and resources they can to M2, and port/remake the Saturn library. Or even create a Saturn Mini. Because then how cool would it be to "hack" it like you can with other mini consoles and upload to it all the Japanese exclusives with fan translations. Because again that's basically the only way to play them, on a actual saturn or a hypothetical mini console version. Otherwise these japanese games including text heavy RPGs that we're told by japanese speakers are classic games, are sitting there unplayable unless you learn an entire language and spend $300 per game for second hand copies. Everyone has a million ways to play Genesis games, even though the Genesis mini is still really awesome. But most people have never had the chance to play the Saturn's best games. So that more than anything needs a new mini console version. Get to work sega
@@duffman18 sega rally championship 95 can easily be played through sega model 2 emulator, it even has wheel support on pc so i dont see why they cant use this emulators system to create a playable version for switch for example :)
SLX did a video on sega ages. I think we all need to accept that Sega is the same company they were back then. It does hurt, but they don't care about their fans unless they're Japanese. America made them rich and they still treated us like idiots. Sega....you need a 32 bit addon
I love watching your videos along with Jason, John, Kelsey, Reggie, and all the Metal Jesus Crew! I started this gaming channel to follow in your guy's footsteps! Just a fun hobby!
I know you were just giving a general overview of the Sega Ages library, but you missed out on some of the more interesting additions; sonic 2 for instance added in the drop dash from mania, space harrier has level selects, a new game mode, and widescreen, viruta racing now has up to 8 player splitscreen and you can increase each race up to 20 laps, etc etc. Your reviews were pretty solid and concise, but I thought I'd point these out. M2 went all out on these games. Sega does was Nintendon't I guess.
Phantasy Star is still popular as a franchise but these days the go to game for it is Phantasy Star Online 2 which recently became a two games in one experience due to an expansion update called New Genesis. you can still play the og PSO2 but you need to complete the tutorial section of New Genesis to unlock it for every new character you create.
Sincerely hope Sega and M2 can port to Switch … …. the system 16 (with double memory) remake of Fantasy Zone 2 they did for PS2 Sega Ages Vol. 33, “Fantasy Zone 2DX”, that also eventually became the Nintendo 3DS’s “3d Fantasy Zone 2W / Link Loop Land”
The heroine in Phantasy Star looks like the inspiration for Princess Lana in the Captain N cartoon. For decades I’ve tried to find the game she came from. That’s been the closest one so far.
Great one Mr Riggs!. That mega man reference XD, I used to do it too. I happen to feel the same way about old games. I wished I could have played them in a time where I devoted one game at a time because of money constraints.
So far I have Virtua Racing, Fantasy Zone and Gain Ground on my Switch via Sega Ages and they are all excellent. Highly recommended for anyone who never experienced Sega in the arcade
Gain Ground is so so simple and so so addictive. I've only played the Mega Drive version though because it's on the Mega Drive collection that's on switch and steam and everything. And it looks identical to the arcade one, even sounds the same, so I didn't see the point of getting the arcade port. But maybe I will, if after some research I find it's got more stuff in it. But yeah it's very addictive in the same way Robotron 2084 is. Very simple goal, easy to pick up and play, but rock hard. Fantasy Zone I love a lot too. Mostly familiar with the Mega Drive one again, because I played that one a lot growing up. It's actually a sequel of sorts to the arcade original, or like half sequel half remake. But they're all bloody difficult. Some of the hardest shooters out there. I can beat the Gradius games but I can never get far in any Fantasy Zone game without save states. It's almost like Parodius, before there was ever Parodius. Not quite as crazy. But the bosses certainly are nuts in a good way. Good luck getting to them and seeing all of them however.
I play the Special Version Outrun arcade with four upgrades such as easy steering, High Powered Engine, Weight armor avoiding flip crashes, and high grip tires. That Ferrari with that high powered engine reaches up to 352km/h (220 MPH)
I love SEGA AGES! Yes, that was a cool nod to Altered Beast in Shinobi - especially since Shinobi was released one year before it. Speaking of which, I know they have it for the 3DS but I wish they would bring Altered Beast to the Switch.
it may not ring a bell right away but Puyo Puyo is the game that inspired the Sonic spin-off game Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine as far as gameplay style goes.
Nothing I can add that hasn't already been said. I don't live in Seattle so don't have experience in what's going on, exactly. And I'm happy for PS5, though some of the games they showed will also be on PS4 and probably Switch as well as Xbox X.
Thank you so much for mentioning that Columns I is included with Columns II, I didn't know that! I don't understand why they do not mention that on the eshop page. I'll get it now, just because of the nostalgia that I feel with Columns I. So again, thank you!!
How am I feeling...a little irritated that the Genesis Mini didn't include many of these games. Thunder Force IV was an absolutely amazing game that pushed the Genesis to its ceiling. It would not look out of place on a Neo Geo AES.
Call out to Altered Beast, I enjoy those as well. Continued in Altered Beast with easter eggs creating a paradox where gamers can escape the fabric of time. 🧐✨👻🗿👀
This line is missing a lot of games. My Hero is one i’d love to see I have the Sega Ages releases of Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Sonic 1, Shinobi and Outrun on my Switch. All great games tbh
Noticed a couple of changes due to legal reasons. 2:04 - Shinobi - The Altered Beast poster used to be Marilyn Monroe and the wall crawler's colors were red/blue in the original. Red crosses were removed from the hospital doors for Wonderboy in Monster-Land.
I have all of these games, except for G Loc, Ichidant R, Phantasy Star and Columns. I completed the Sega Ages Sonic The Hedgehog game. The controls are much better than the one that came with the genesis collection and the spin dash is a nice bonus. Finally I'd like to point out that with that Shinobi Arcade game, I like to turn on the arcade cabinet design while playing it on TV.
Hey John, do you know about them bringing Afterburner 2 and/or Super Thunderblade (arcade versions) to Sega Ages ? Would REALLY love to see them and would buy day one.
Still waiting for lesser known titles like Dragon Force or Golden Axe Warriors to be added to Sega Ages. These games needs it so much since they're stuck on a single plateform and quite pricy today.
Hi, JohnRiggs! Do you know if it's possible to play the following games on Nintendo Switch? [G-Lock]/[After Burner], [Hang on], [Out run], [Thunder Blade], [Super Thunder Blade] If not possible, is there any other console where I could get them played in one console?
For years I was wondering why there was a columns and a columns 3 for the genesis and no columns 2. I forgot all about it until they finally released it in NA for the switch and although it’s not as good as columns 3, the music is kind of addicting to listen to and the difficulty adds to the gameplay experience for me.
Ummmm... no. Dragon Quest DEFINITELY came before Phantasy Zone. Dragon Warrior and Dragon Quest are the same series! They just renamed Dragon Quest to Dragon Warrior outside of Japan until Dragon Quest VIII on PS2 due to copyright issues!
Out Run does not have obstacle in the way (other than cars), I think you are driving to much off road ;). And Wonder Boy in Monster Land is the arcade version, is it not?
So many amazing games on the mega drive they could port over but Sega don't seem that interested in Sega ages anymore I'm crying out for crazy taxi on the switch as the android version is really good 🚕
I wonder why Sega keep on releasing the same games on Sega ages. They have so many other quality ip’s to release, such as Sega rally, Daytona 1/2, golden axe 2, house of the dead, just to name a few.
@JohnRiggs you forgot to mention the Arcade version of Sonic 1, the Mega Tech/Play version. Also Sonic 2 was a huge disappointment as they didn't add any of the Zones that were remove from the final version let alone add the Mega Tech/Mega Play version of Sonic 2.
