I'm a model railroader. We always have limited space and always want more room for our layouts. I've partially solved this issue by utilizing a strategy of "measure once, cut twice". This effectively doubles the size of the layout because I have to re-do most projects when I make a mistake! I see you have adopted a similar plan. If you become really skilled at this tactic, you will never run out of fun things to do on your railroad because one error will lead to another to another to another, ad infinitum. Carry on!

you once talked about using concrete for the sleepers. if you are using Firewood for Heating dont throw away the Ash, you can actually make cement out of it. mix the Ash with Water and shape them into Balls like Snowballs and let them dry. once you have enough you can burn them in a Kiln ~1,5h. you can make concrete out of it by taking 1 part Woodashcement and 3 parts of Sand and some water again. BUT the mixture is a bit causting and you will have burns on your skin so wear something over your hands. video of Primitiv Technology ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DP0t2MmOMEA.html cheers and take care.

@leverettrailfan5414
@leverettrailfan5414 Год назад
If nothing else Ash can be good fill material- an inexpensive 'ballast' used for grading on old railroads was "cinder"- ash left over from burning the coal (or wood) that was used mostly for firing steam locomotives. It was cheap, plentiful, and they needed to get rid of it anyway. It won't be able to do all the magical things that proper ballast can, but it can certainly provide fill- and sometimes that's just what you need! But I get the feeling there's many good uses for Ash on a farm in Ireland, besides fill for building a railway.

I know this was some months ago now, but it might be worth adding some gussets or diagonal bracing to the ends of the flatbed where it connects to the wagons, you're exposing those welded butt joints to quite a bit of force and the repeated load/unload cycles will lead to a fatigue failure. adding a diagonal brace will prevent some of that movement.
@Santafefrank
@Santafefrank Год назад
Thanks Tim
@everestyeti

That's the beauty of living in a country where they still allow the free movement of people, hence why you can use French person power. Over here in the UK we no longer have that luxury. Am glad this part of the railway works, you need to work out a pulley system that ties in with your static engine, which would help retrieve your muck wagon from the garlic field. You could also use it at harvest time, when moving the garlic from the garlic field. I say you need to work it out, because I have absolutely no idea how it would work. 😂🤣
@Youchubeswindon
@Youchubeswindon Год назад
What a nonsense statement about using the French. They might be long term, but are probably short term in Ireland, and that would be covered by the reciprocal 90 day tourist visa that UK citizens would have to Schengen and vice versa. French and other Schengen citizens come to the UK to volunteer under WWOOF, free board and food, they just can't get paid for it. Also you obviously didn't watch the video properly to think that it would be in anyway feasible the muck heap to garlic run can be powered by a cable from the stationary engine.

@Conn653
@Conn653 Год назад
I suggest securing the plywood to the inverted troughs. Add a 2" X 4" X 8" block to the edge where the wheels of the wheelbarrow are to stop. This will act like a bumper. Do the same for each leg of the wheelbarrow. This will keep the wheelbarrows from sliding off. When you lift the handles, the legs will rise above the bumper as you pull the wheelbarrows off the platform.

@BattleshipOrion
@BattleshipOrion Год назад
Might be worth it if the line was steeper, but the loco is still gonna be needed if the thing fails...so there's that. Especially considering available materials, the cost of said materials over a given span of time, climate, dynamic loading, and keeping the line on a budget. Locomotives on this kind of scale are cheaper in most parts of the world, as they can be made using a engine as small as a single cylinder, & bike chain (plus the other components). Plus it's more worth while to have versatility over simplicity. Not only that, but if done right, and you have a powerful enough engine, PTO could be an option for helping unload bulk loads (vibration).
@ivoryfields2631

railway design is sensible. Capable of increasing productivity greatly. Only one input I can offer is to run the railway through the centre of the garlic beds after harvest. A few cars dedicated to taking the harvest on racks and you could drive them straight into a drying tunnel. Harvest directly to the cars and let em dry on it. Same size has your wood chip cars but whoth horizontal mesh trays. Honestly the suggestion only is about minimising human handling time and distance walked.

So you'd have like 5 trophs/tubs that you can side load onto the wagon with one wheel barrow frame It sounds super complicated, but I think it wouldn't be a big deal for a crazy chum like you that's basically playing Factorio in his back yard. Rather than controlling the speed downhill by holding it back with a rope, an upgrade could add a platform on the rear bogie where you could sit/stand and operate a handbrake. A simple rim block like your locomotive has should be fine. One axle alone may not have enough traction to stop that heavy load so it may be necessary to link the two axles of the bogie using a chain or tie rod.
@wayoutwest-workshopstuff6299
Exactly - so that's why I'm holding onto the end of the rope. Much easier/cheaper/quicker : - )
