The overall penalty for dropping once in multiple different teams totals to a penalty greater than multiple drops in one team, it's about a 20 banner penalty for one drop so that would me he lost about 80 banners overall, but the penalty for 3 drops on one battle is close to a total of 40 or 50 so that would be why even if you have similar drop counts the dropping on multiple different would cause a loss
