In this video, we look at 12V LED dimmers and their characteristics. This provides background information for a future dimmer shootout video I will be creating.
Important Note. Although I show dimming a switch-mode LED fixture, I do not recommend attempting to dim those types of LED lights.

Wow, you have a well-organized mind! I love how you logically build one concept on the next. I started the video with no idea what PWM is, and left with the concept crystal-clear. Such a video is obviously a large task to accomplish; thanks for taking time not only to share your knowledge, but for your care in making it accurate and provable.

Have been trying to dim my Caravan led's with no success. Now i understand why. I can't get to my LED lights negative side since its behind the walls and your explanation about high and low side dimmers has helped me realise why my dimmer just does nothing. Thank you for your explanation. I was pulling my hair out. Next problem is finding a high side dimmer in Australia.....

Another great video. Looking forward to the dimmer shootout! I hope you'll touch on the effects of each dimmer's PWM frequency, both in terms RF interference as well as flicker - that which is visible to the naked eye and also flicker captured only on video, as many RV channels film inside their rig. Perhaps you can also discuss ways to minimize RF interference (length/routing/shielding of cables), if not in the shootout video, then perhaps a in a follow-up video or on your web site. Cheers!

Thanks so much for your excellent explanation. I believe that if you packaged a console product for RV, van life folks and marine you could enjoy a well funded retirement. I wish for a pre organized console with clear direction or package to buy for lights etc.- but will now try to make one with my feeble skills. Warmest regards

I've been watching your videos, but I haven't seen a demonstration of the actual wire connection to the dimmer. I bought the American Technology slide dimmer that you show in your video. It has three wires. The switch that I am replacing only has two wires. I've seen one video where they said to combine the red and black wires, that would the the 12v and ground wires. What do you recommend for this? Thanks

Great video! So what if you just bypass all the electronics in the puck light? Won't that make it useable with even the cheap dimmer?

On 6:43 in the video did you mean horizontal? When the line is horizontal is a zero volt rand. Vertical is up and down. Horizontal is side to side.

Can i use 30A dimmer for controll 775 motor ? Plz reply ...

I am assuming you want to connect a 12VDC 30A dimmer to a 12VDC motor, which is what I believe a 775 motor is, without checking specs. If the dimmer uses PWM, and most do, then yes, it would work, as long as you match the orientation (i.e. high side vs. low side). However, there is a better way. You can buy inexpensive 12VDC motor controllers like this one: amzn.to/3Jejjzy The advantage is you can control the motor in forward as well as reverse direction. The limitation is the maximum output of the controller is 6A, so you will have to make sure it will work with your motor (but there are higher amp versions available - just search for a "pwm dc motor controller" or similar).

Unfortunately they do not make much money. My son was a teacher for 13yrs before he changed careers because he was tired of being among the working poor.
