Thank you for all the good information! I have wanted a hydrangea but the huge price tag discouraged me. But this fall I found one for $5.50!!! I called my sister and she bought one for herself and one for each of her sons. I’m hoping it winters over okay and look forward to blossoms! Hurray!

Do you think spraying them with a neem oil will help prevent the leaf spot. I had it bad last summer and would like to avoid it this year.
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 7 лет назад
+Anita Hadley It's worth a try. I suspect neem oil claims are to good to be true sometimes. Daconil would be a good choice if the neem oil fails this year.

I am in zone 7b OK. I planted a "blue" hydrangea the only place I thought got mostly shade. Turns out it gets 3 hours of direct afternoon sun. The plant will looks fine in the morning but very floppy most of the day (not pretty). I think I have been over watering trying to help it. It also has the same black leaf spot (I think I bought it like that). I am newer to gardening and this big leaf hydrangea looks beautiful in other gardens except mine is struggling! I don't want to dig it up because I do not have another location around my house that would offer better conditions. What should I do?

I’m in zone 9b. I just bought my first 2 hydrangeas from a big box store. I want to plant them in the ground but afraid once summer comes along. As of now I have them under shade against my house facing north. The first couple days they would shrivel up with the heat and humidity. I watered them every morning but still had that issue. I decided to buy me some watering globes that I stuck into the soil. I have noticed that helps it during the day from shriveling up. Then later in the evenings I will refill the globes and place them back in.

I have 2 bushes planted too close together and too close to the house by previous owner. We just widened that bed so we can move them out a bit, but they will likely get more sun (under window on north side of house). I think we need to move them this winter. Sad! They are beautiful right now and will be covered in light pink blooms shortly.

I used potash sulfate, I don’t know where I read that. Just added it last week, to the giant hydrangeas I inherited when I bought this home. They were blue last year, but this year I amended the soil to plant a+flower garden around them. When it started blooming this spring, the flowers were white! But they seem to blooming a bit tinged blue this week, so I am hoping the potash sulfate is working?

Hi. I'm in zone 7b, Alabama. We have what I have tentatively identified as a Bigleaf Hydrangea. It hasn't received care for years but has survived and flowered every year anyway. Now I'm here and I want to take care of it. It's flowers are blue. It's growing near trees but in a position to get a few hours of full sun. I've mulched with pine straw and removed dead branches, etc. I didn't prune it, thank goodness! It's rather straggly and I would like to prune it at the appropriate time. When/how can I do this? Also, I planted three low-hanging branches to grow new plants and they've rooted and are doing well. Should I cover them when it's freezing? Thank you for sharing your knowledge and doing it in a professional and interesting way. Thanks for any advice you may have for me.

Thanks for the video. I am new to the garden scene. My goal is to have a beautiful, healthy, blooming garden in the front and back of my house. Here is my question. I live in zone 6a. I purchased a MATHILDA GUTGES HYDRANGEA. It says on the tag that it is rated for zone 7 with a cold hardness at 10 - 0 deg. F. Our winter has been known to go in the negative on occasion. My question: Will this be a problem, or could I mulch it for winter? Please advise.

I needed this mini lesson. I have two that look near death every afternoon. So of course I water them. If I miss a day, the leaves turn Brown on the edges like theyve been cooked. It does get 4-5 hours of morning sun though. Maybe thats too much?

I had the same problem. First year they went in the ground lots of blooms already on the plants from the nursery. Last year maybe one? I read that they need a fertilizer with a higher phosphorous amount ( the middle number). They were getting good morning sun and afternoon shade so I knew that wasn’t the problem. I bought Dr. Earth Organic Bud and Bloom Booster with a 3-9-4 ratio and fertilized in April, all plants are showing buds! I’ll hit them again at least one more time probably late June. Very excited! I think the added phosphorous boost was exactly what they needed. You might give it a try.

More likely for parts of California to get up to 105 degrees than the southeast. It always rains in the southeast when it reaches the 90's and cools it down.

Exactly right. I lived in North East Florida for 26 years, recently grew endless summer hydrangeas there, with absolutely no problem. They just need good shade, and lots of water. People tend to think Florida summers are hotter than everywhere else but not true. I moved to Missouri two years ago, and I brought my plants from Florida, and they wilt bad here in the much hotter missouri summers! Florida isn't hotter, it's just hotter for longer periods of the year. Arkansas and Missouri get hotter summer heat waves up to 105 each summer, and Florida stays cooler.

It's probably Espoma Holly Tone. It makes the soil more acidic which makes some hydrangea flowers more blue. Edit to add: Espoma Soil Acidifier probably works better than the Holly Tone, but I am guessing at that.

Whow you described the problems I have had and my blue hydrangea to a T. I did not know if I was over watering it our under watering it, if it had too much sun where it was located or not enough sun. No fertilizer etc. So now I know. I had just taken it up after 2 yrs. of not doing well in it's spot outside (in you guessed it the southeast; Florida) and put it back in a pot and was going to try the move around the yard technique until finding someplace it was happy. I had a great success my poinsettia so thought I would "plant" my hydrangea outside too.

I have been reading conflicting facts about the winter hardiness of this plant. Any advice for winter protection? Do I have to protect them this following winter? Are they capable of reblooming next year? I'm just trying to make sure it's actually a perennial! I hope I didn't waste all my money! I spent a pretty penny on a dozen.

Really enjoyed your information. Our Hydrangeas were planted very close to our chain-link fence.. so close that some of the flowers actually develop on stems that are protruding through the fencing. These are mature plants; may we dig up the root ball for each plant, divide same and replant farther away from the fence? We would move the divided root ball approximately 10"-12" away from the fence to allow growth and control. thank you for any suggestions you may offer. foxygramaKo
