All About Eastern Redbuds - My Favorite Trees - In this video I go some exciting new varieties of Eastern Redbuds as well as details for maintaining them. Eastern Redbuds are flowering trees that are native to most of the Eastern United States. There are purple, green, gold, and variegated foliage varieties. They also come in flower colors from almost red, to pinkish-purple, and white.

I always enjoy your videos, they are loaded with the information I need. Two years ago I moved from Michigan (zone 4), where I had many gardens and a beautiful redbud that served as the archway into my flagstone patio. Now I am in Florida on the edge of zones 8 and 9. Am loving the challenge and some of my new options, but I am sad to see that redbud is not one of them. Perhaps wanting a redbud here is simply sentimental. I will be looking at the many options available to me and watching more videos. Have Fun!

Great presentation. I was searching for information about Vanilla Twist because I just moved into a home with one of these and noticed what appeared to be a taller bit that wasn't weeping/twisted. That looked like something that would come off a root stock but when I searched for information about these trees from several nurseries none of them mentioned it being grafted/budded. Thanks !

Great video! I am in zones 7-8 in central Arkansas. I planted a darling lavender twist @10 years ago, but unfortunately didn’t know I needed to stake it while it grew.😢😢 Now it is @4’ + tall, @5’ wide, looks like a very thick umbrella or dome🙂but the limbs touch the ground every single year. I clip them back off the ground, but hurts my heart to have to do that each year. Afraid I will eventually ruin it. They do bloom beautifully, though. I get lots of compliments on it. Just wish I had known better back when it was young. Also, it gets sun most of day, and leaves burn a bit towards the end of Summer. Wish I had the guts to move it. Thanks for your informative videos, Jim.

I had the bare root ones u get 10 for $10 every year from the arborday. lets just say i had at least 30 of them in my yard before I moved. Will be moving again to what i'm hoping to be my forever home and plan on planting them all over the place again.

My Merlot Eastern Redbud is my fav tree. The purple is AMAZING! It just looks surreal. Unfortunately the main part of the trunk top about 6ft tall broke in a storm so it hasn’t grown any taller but man it’s like 14’ in diameter with the branches and creates an amazing canopy. The branches grow so long they almost touch the ground and I have to trim them back so they don’t break (and cause my dad whines about them when he mowed the lawn with the riding mower 🙄). But it’s my pride and joy! We have some mimosa trees that have a lot of lichen this year and about 6 black Cherry trees (they don’t actually produce cherries) that are dropping leaves like crazy from black spot disease and I’m so terrified my Merlot is going to get sick too. But yea, I love eastern redbuds. We have so many around our yard in our “natural privacy fence” (we just let about a 5’ space around our yard that we don’t now) and tulip trees, redbuds, mimosas and other grow like crazy. I’m going to see if I can graft another eastern redbud onto the top to give it more structure so we’ll see!

I have Alley Cat. It's variegated and supposed to be in full sun. But full sun in West Tennessee can be brutal so I planted it in light shade and it's a beautiful tree. I saw a Rising Sun in full sun and it was gloriously beautiful all summer so I bought and planted on in full sun too. It's looking good. I also bought a Carolina Sweetheart. It gets full morning sun and it looks fabulous. Red Bud Trees are wonderful trees to live with.

@@RedCoin91 Hi, The Carolins Sweetheart has grown, but so slowly! It is still less than knee high. It only gets morning sun and is planted under a massive oak tree. I believe it would be much better off had I planted it in full sun. I believe they are capable of prospering in that setting. I has a Rising Sun that grew beautifully in sun and currently have a Flamethrower that is also growing well. Flamethrower gets solid sun all day long. After always using Redbuds as an understory tree it feels odd to place them in sun. Good luck with your new tree.

This is an olde video, I was searching flame thrower redbud. I'm in the central valley of California, zone 9b. I have had a Oklahoma red bud in my small full sun back yard (my only tree) for 5 or 6 years. It's GORGEOUS and doing really well. We get high heat, high wind, and low humidity. It gets a little stressed by late summer, but we haven't had any health issues. I keep it cleaned up by removing unnecessary interior growth and I cut back the sides and bottoms in late spring. We love this showy tree. We want to add a flame thrower to our front yard, but it's so new there are no mature tree photos out there. I'm a little leary.

man, it sounds like you gotta plant some big trees, let em grow for a few years like 3 or 4 big trees and then plant some redbuds under em and make a tiny forest. Idk where your land is, but I might suggest the bald cypress tree, they love full sun and are super hardy trees they like really moist areas best though, they do grow these knots that come out of the ground but its nbd if you're making a tiny forest it will be pretty cool! Good habitat for birds too, the redbud will live for about 50 years, but the bald cypress tree can live for 2000 years and beyond. I just planted one, pretty cool to think I might have planted a tree that could be around in 2000 years.

Hi Jim, love your show! I wish your nursery was down here in Atlanta so I could stop by and purchase a few things. ☺️ What is the tree to the left of your Forest Pansy? Shown in the drone shot at about 10:39, of your video. It’s several feet taller and appears to have several teardrop shape leaves running down a main stem, water falling down the branches. I was thinking it might be some sort of Locust tree? I lost 5 of my Dogwood trees in the past 10 years, I was told they aged out (60yrs) I would like to replace them but not sure a new tree would survive in deep understory north facing shade. I’ve been considering Dogwood, Crape Myrtle or Redbud trees. I live near Midtown Atlanta which I think is zone 7 I have a rather dense old growth canopy, which includes a few Redbud understory volunteers. I look forward to your thoughts. Thanks!

We are pretty far north, in high desert SE Idaho where summers are short, hot, and the air is dry. Can any take full sun here? Most of the ones I have seen around town are in part shade, but one seems like it is pretty much in the afternoon sun all day. Also-I would love to know if the squirrels will eat the seed pods. We love the squirrels and if we are going to have a tree dropping crap in fall, it would be nice if the squirrels could at least make use of it. They eat all the maple seeds, so having those little twirly pods all over the ground is not so annoying. Thanks.

Another great video! I live in Concord, NC and I planted a young (approx. 5ft) Eastern Redbud this spring. Flowers bloomed and then it leafed out only on the bottom of the tree. Is that because the lower part of the tree is the oldest growth? Thanks!

It's almost June. Is the growth below the graft?

I planted Eastern Redbud tree in middle of July of this year. For a week after planting, we had nice warm temperature around 85F+, some rain and clouds in afternoon. Tree looked happy. But then we had 95-103F temps and I noticed some leaves became yellow and it really made me upset. Plus, when people from Home Depot helped me to load tree, they pushed tree recklessly hard in my SUV and I discovered only at home that huge brunch was broken and teared off part of trunk. I have no idea what is going on with the tree and that's why I am here searching for answer or advice. Does Redbud tree go in stress after planting ? Maybe I overwatered this tree? In first two weeks I was watering this tree every other day when we had 95 and no rain. I checked with stick soil and if it was damp, I did not water. I ordered special fertilizer for Redbud trees and special healing paste for Bonsai trees. One what I bought like black spray decided not to use because it looks ugly. Tree is about 7 ft tall and trunk at the bottom is thick, like good 4 inches diameter. Would you please give me any advice. Paid $140 for the tree. Live in zone 5b, Northern Nevada. Also, label on tree indicated "Full sun". My backyard has only morning sun and full blast sun from 11:00 a.m. Cannot plant in front of the house because only backyard has fence and local deers eat everything, including " deer resistant" plants

Hi I received 2 free through a program. I don’t know what I’m doing. Not much info on how to plant this tree in a clayey soil. So if you can tell me how to amend my soil so my trees can thrive. Thank you

Are the new varieties as big? I had an eastern redbud but a tornado split it in half but it got too big for front yard! It’s the width I am worried about ! I believe I’m zone 7 in eastern Pa

How do I promote more branches to grow? P I purchased a 15ft one today, but is only full at the top. Pretty bare for the most part. I live in Nashville, TN.

You can tip prune it a little, but I don't find them all that receptive to rebranching in the lower parts of the tree

As beautiful as the Eastern Redbud is, the downside is the pea pods that developed after the flowering. They drop everywhere and sprout which has been a source of aggravation for me as well as my neighbours. I’m wondering if all Eastern Redbud trees develop these pea pods or could it be there are female versions that only produce them? I live in Ontario, Canada and my Redbud has grown into a very large tree (30 feet) in 10 years and is producing more pea pods every year. I’m afraid that I’ll have to cut it down.

Uh oh. I planted an Eastern Redbud in the northwest corner of my backyard. It pretty much gets full sun. It’s still a young sapling. Wonder if I can move it...

I don't know where you live. If you're in the south, it may not be happy. You can monitor it this first summer. It won't kill it. It will just look fried.
