CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Margo's (Bette Davis) bad feelings toward Eve (Anne Baxter) become apparent; Addison (George Sanders) introduces a young starlet (Marilyn Monroe).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the story The Wisdom of Eve by Mary Orr, All About Eve is an elegantly bitchy backstage story revolving around aspiring actress Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter). Tattered and forlorn, Eve shows up in the dressing room of Broadway mega-star Margo Channing (Bette Davis), weaving a melancholy life story to Margo and her friends. Taking pity on the girl, Margo takes Eve as her personal assistant. Before long, it becomes apparent that nave Eve is a Machiavellian conniver who cold-bloodedly uses Margo, her director Bill Sampson (Gary Merill), Lloyd's wife Karen (Celeste Holm), and waspish critic Addison De Witt (George Sanders) to rise to the top of the theatrical heap. Also appearing in All About Eve is Marilyn Monroe, introduced by Addison De Witt as "a graduate of the Copacabana school of dramatic art." This is but one of the hundreds of unforgettable lines penned by writer/director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, the most famous of which is Margo Channing's lip-sneering admonition, "Fasten your seat belts. It's going to be a bumpy night." All About Eve received 6 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

The posture and body movement when she exhaled that drag of her cigarette is an example of what made Bette such a prolific actress. A physical nuance playing naturally in sync with the lines and attitude of the character.

You have to be familiar with the old Copa (or the Manilow song?) I also like how Margo introduces Miss Caswell to Eve: "An old friend of Mr. DeWitt's mother." And...DeWitt's riposte to Margo asking what he's doing there when he was uninvited: "Margo, dear, you were an unforgettable Peter Pan. You must play it again soon." Too much to choose from in this (my favorite) movie!

The first 35 seconds of this video has more intelligent and original dialogue that most modern movies have in two hours. So many older movies have that in common (I'm thinking of The Lion in Winter as a superb example). Great dialogue and great acting, real acting. You still see some of it today...Robert Duvall's eyes and facial expressions, Anthony Hopkins vocal tones and subtle mannerisms...but such acting is becoming rarer and rarer. It's difficult to find a modern Barbara Stanwyck.

Indeed, but acting today is not bad it's the script: The dialogue, the humour, the politeness and mannerisms as you've said but mostly They do speak perfectly and proper English, not the crap English language of today and the script are only few words nothing you can learn or humouring, in fact it's funny but funny vs humour aren't the same. Humour it's made for good laugh and the ability to play and use the exact proper words to make it all laughable or leasing one to think about it, in fact you have to be an intellect mastering the language well. Today English words/ language is nonsense! Just to say all that was before, and made the movie better

Love *George Sander's* voice... so English, so aloof and arrogant! 💂 I like the subtle wordplay in this movie... "Karen, you're a Gibson Girl." Gibson Girls were a series of illustrations by Charles Gibson of the ideal woman. A Gibson drink contains gin and dry vermouth. The *Peter Pan* reference is Addison's clever way of insulting Margo's age.

She did have some talent- shows through in films like "How to Marry a Millionaire," "Some Like It Hot," "Niagara," and "Bus Stop." I think one of her largest problems was plain insecurity. She was apparently a pain to work wit because she always had to have an acting coach present (like Natasha Lytess), whom she relied on like a crutch. If you look closely in a few of her movies, you can see her glancing in the off-set direction as she delivers, presumably looking for approval.

Monroe was just breaking into the movie business when she got the role of Miss Casswell, and she felt grossly intimidated by all the experienced, talented people in the cast. Nervous and insecure, Monroe needed 11 takes to get through the scene where her character talks to Margo after a failed audition. When it was finally done, Davis snapped at her, whereupon Monroe exited the set and vomited. She later said that Barbara Stanwyck was the only big-name actress who was nice to her.

The famous black dress! It was meant to be more of a 'scoop neck' but some seamstress disaster the night before it was needed made it way too large a neck opening and unusable. Bette pulled the whole neck opening down exposing her shoulders to see how it looked. The seamstresses fitted it. Edith Head designed the dress and it was actually made of heavy dark brown silk because that material shows up particularly lush looking in black and white. If you look closely you can see some oh-so-chic ermine trim on the dress as well.

Bette Davis' famous words in "All About Eve": "Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy ride"/ That combative catchphrase stressed home the point that stardom is not an easy road to travel on, with more brickbats than bouquets in the offing and you learn to take them all in your stride.

I am Margo. I watched the film for the first time a month ago and its been my favourite ever since. through out the film I was thinking omg this is me, I do that. that's probably why I love the film so much because I relate to Margo however I don't know if that's to be considered a good or a bad thing.

As great as Anne Baxter was, and she was, Bettie was even greater in this classic. She was the scene whenever she was on. A few downright classic moments in this one. I'm going over her movies again (my memory isn't the greatest anymore so I don't recall the others much...lol) but I think this might hold up as one of her bests. That's only my opinion of course. Just sharing.
