Ferrous metal is made up of iron and other metals to give the required properties. Ferrous metals have high carbon content which generally makes them vulnerable to rust when exposed to moisture. In case of ferrous metal, the base metal is iron.

1. High tensile strength.
2. Magnetic ( because of the presence of iron )
3. Low resistance to corrosion.
4. Good conductor of electricity.
5. Good conductor of heat.
We know that iron is base metal in ferrous metal. So, it is necessary to known about iron.
Iron And Its Ores
The earth crust contains about 5 iron. Iron is extracted from the earth crust, found in form of ores. The iron ores are in the form of oxides, carbonates and sulphides.
Classification Of Iron Ores
Oxides Ores:
Hematite : It contains about 70 percent iron. This is also called red ore.
Magnetite : It contains 72-75 percent iron. This is also called black ore.
Limonite : It contains about 60 percent iron. This is also called brown ore.
Carbonates Ores:
Siderite : It contains 35-48 percent iron.
Sulphides Ores:
Pyrite : It contains 30-40 percent iron. A high sulphur content presence in this types of ores.
Iron is produced from blast furnace. This iron is called pig iron. Pig iron is the raw material for the production of different types of ferrous metals. Such as wrought Iron, Cast Iron and Steel.
