Once a month? My tank is fairly new,like 2 months old with a pair of clownfish, hardly any brown algae(diatoms) but noticed today green hair algae I do a 10% water change every week without fail I use natural sea water from a good source I was happy to see green instead of brown,now I'm lost and confused Don't tangs eat green algae? Because I want it to grow so I can eventually buy an expensive yellow tang,my favourite fish pretty much Help me somebody I use RODI water only too as a top up

Flow is a huge misconception with hair algae!. If you've ever been to a rocky coastline in Florida or the gulf coast, you will see a ton of hair algae growing with the surf breaking on the rocks! Prime area to find large hermits and turbo snails!. Hair algae has no issue growing in high flow. Just look at algae covered powerheads as an in tank example. I thing it actually prefers higher flow

Hi ‘wife’! So here is my problem…I have a new tank (less than 1 year old) I think my lights are set too high..the top sides of my rocks are turning green. On the other hand I have corals that are photosynthetic. I have had one person suggest that could be an “ugly phase” that all tanks go through Second, my hubs has hair algae…bad… his thank in newer than mine. He will not make the effort to get it out. Who is right here. I absolutely will not allow anything from his tank touch my tank. If we must share a tool at usually gets dunked in bleach water for a few minutes then dried completely. I really REALLY don’t want the hair algae to transfer to my tank. Am I being excessive? Help Lastly…the product you recommended, who makes if? Or can you send a pic of what the box looks like? I use a refugium, where would I put it? Thanks for any answers you can give me.

I know this is an old video but I've just came across it. A couple of issues I have with the methods shown in your video, never have I been to just syphon hair algae up like that without having to pull on it, was that patch ready to die or something? Also the hair algae I have isn't growing long to grab a significant amount, just when I think I have a good clump I pull on it and it's as if most of it just stays put and I only get a few small strands it's super frustrating. You also mentioned the level of light, my Radions are at 30% power and any lower my LPS and NEM'S close up and die or the NEM'S start detaching and get sucked up into the powerheads. At what stage in a reef aquarium can you actually not worry about level of light as most reefers have SPS that simply cannot go below 50% or more light intensity. It seems that a lot of natural methods could also cause you other issues in relation to corals and fish health.
@BrockLeonard
@BrockLeonard Год назад
Yeah cleaning other clients tanks over the years, it seems like hair algae grows in a lot of different fashions. I was lucky with the kind that grew in my tank cause it was so easy to pull off. Not all is like that. For tanks that we couldn’t get all of it off, we usually had to resort to putting an invert in that could clean it up naturally. Whether that’s was an urchin, turbo snails, or even a slug. Having those int here to eat the algae will allow you to raise that lighting power up.
@melodic_breezy
@melodic_breezy Год назад
@@BrockLeonard thanks for the reply man really appreciate it. I currently have 2 tuxedo urchins but they've become quite lazy, I'm not sure if urchins take a break from hoovering up because they were really going to town at first. My LFS has currently got a monster sea hare which I may pick up this week. I do weekly 10% water changes and after todays change I tested my parameters which are sitting at 10 for nitrate and 0.025 for phos which is the lowest count on my Nyos test kit so it's either genuinely low or the GHA is absorbing it quicker than I can test. I'll try the sea hare first before considering chemical action like NOPOX or Vibrant.
@BrockLeonard
@BrockLeonard Год назад
@@melodic_breezy sounds like a solid plan. I feel like I’m dealing with the same issue on my Halloween urchin. Used to be a beast but now only eats my tang’s dry seaweed 😂 just an fyi on the sea hare’s, once they run out of algae in the tank it’s usually best to take em out unless you can supplement their diet with more. They’re bad about perishing once out of natural hair algae.

I lost a Torch coral because a patch of this hair algae settled on it. I felt so horrible, my poor coral, but I'm grateful it was the only one. I just have a Nano reef tank, but I love it to bits. Could you kindly explain to me if it's okay to take the live rock out of the water and scrub it off in a bucket of salt water to remove hair algae? I'm so worried I'll harm the little creatures living in the live rock.
@BrockLeonard
@BrockLeonard 2 года назад
It's a last resort solution. I'd rather recommend getting some hermit crabs and snails to go in there and naturally clean up the algae for you. Also during the water changes, try to suck out as much as your can, and let the clean up crew do the rest. Even urchins or certain fish like lawnmower blennies can clean it up for you.
@axolotlmafia
@axolotlmafia 2 года назад
@@BrockLeonard Thank you, I do have a Starry Blenny, and several Hermit Crabs that have lived happily in the tank for several years. It depends on how much you are taking out. We usually recommend doing 20% water change once a month or a 10% every other week. If you are trying to fight a spike in one of your levels, once a week would be sufficient. I wouldn’t recommend doing it more than that.
