Thank you for this! I bought a maple last year and planted in the fall. It was simpled labeled 'Acer Palmatum' and I've been trying to figure out which cultivar. By watching this video I am fairly certain now that it is some variety of Coral Bark, which I am thrilled about! I can't wait for it to wake up this spring and mature!

Absolutely love your videos, Jim! Very informative and have learned so many new plants! I do have a few points in your video. I live in Central Indiana (border on zone 5b and 6a) Japanese Maples do not tolerate full sun well here. In fact the thrive in near full shade or morning sun and afternoon shade. The leaves scorch in afternoon sun, and the color can completely bleach from the leaves by the end of Summer. While I do totally agree with you they do best with some direct sun, I always avoid full sun even in zone 5. Zone 5 summers are just as hot and humid as the Deep South.

I took some JM cuttings on 30th March and got some lovely little plants now. I've even made a new video on their progress so far. I am now thinking about the coming winter and surviving the cold to then wake up in bud the following spring. I plan to keep them in my mini greenhouse which is in my old aviary with a vine plant growing over it. If it gets very cold, I'll cover them a little further within the greenhouse to be safe.

For my 2¢, if anyone is more interested in getting a larger tree fast as opposed to what exactly that JM looks like, then honestly I'd recommend going with a base Acer palmatum and not one of the varietals (i.e. the JM your varietal is grafted onto). As many have learned from seeing below-the-graft shoots taking off, your basic palmatum is usually much more vigorous than any of its varietals, and once well established can add on 2-3 feet of growth per year easily. A good option if you're wanting to build up and develop your landscape in the shortest time possible.

It got quite a bit of foliage this spring...however, It really hasn't grown at all. It has stayed relatively at the same height as when I got it. Not entirely sure what I did wrong. maybe it needs better dirt and mulch around it?

On our property in Beaverton OR maples are planted all over our clay soil. Some of the large ones are experiencing bark rot and slow decline towards death. The smaller weeping maples are I assume similar aged with no health issues. So go with smaller, slow growing varieties! They won’t be as hampered by dense soil.

Hello Jim! I was almost ready to put this weeping Japanese maple to the curb. Three years ago we had a bad snow storm here on East Coast of Long Island. A chunk of the maple broke off. My husband tried grafting it back together with pantyhose. It worked! My maple was a gorgeous purple color now the majority of the plant is green. Almost similar to the one you showed green with reddish/purple edges. I’ve had the tree for almost 10 years. If I could figure out how to forward a photo I would. Is there anyway to get it back to the reddish color?
@JimPutnam

It really sounds like the tree is not the named variety you purchased, it is the root stock variety. Meaning when it broke, it grew vack from below the graft.

Gotta love acer palmatum the only draw back I've had with them is the spring frost issue. It's ridiculous they leaf out even before the forsythia blooms here in far southwestern Virginia. I still love them I can say out of my collection, yes I hoard them, the hardiest cultivar is the butterfly! Somehow all the others will freeze fry and no matter how cold it gets the butterfly dosent receive a bit of damage. I have the two butterflies in the most exposed elevated part of my yard marking end of my driveway. Multiple nights in the upper teens dosent phase them their amazing and I do not protect them like the others by scrambling to blanket them!

It is going to be different for everyone,because of soil types, wind, temp, and more. I use a technique where I saturate the area very well and then I let it dry out. Just check it with a finger everyday. That should give an idea of how long it takes to dry in your space.
