I've seen those for about $20-$25 at harbor freight. Just remembered to get some of those 20% off coupons in the upper left corner of their adds (in your "junk mail") & you can save a good amount regardless of what you're buying & if it's on sale or not. Stay sharp.
I got the same Apache case and I also had a problem with the top piece of foam falling out, I tried double sided tape, duct tape, school glue, and even wood glue, the only thing that seemed to work is a thing called shoe goo I just let it dry for around 2 1/2 days and it held perfectly(the smell eventually went away). And also my Bali’s fit if you just peel both layers of foam and just close it, the egg shape top really conforms to whatever shape you want it to.
*VERY IMPORTANT:* Before plucking out the foam go on Microsoft word and draw a table 23 rows by 16 that's how many cubes there are in the case. Then use a marker to fill in the holes that way you can map out how you want to pluck it before you do, I've already bought 4 cases before I figured this out. Also when you're done plucking use plastidip from home depot to help really seal in the foam squares about 7 good coats will make the foam perfect.
What ive always used is a Tackle Box, I put the good ones in the place where you'd put the hooks, and the cheaper ones that i dont really care if they get scratched just kinda pile in the bottom
I was exactly the same...always had one and in my pocket...now have almost 200 as well and it gets a bit more challenging. I use the spyderco large spydy-pacs which are great. I have 3 large and 1 small filled and a drawer filled as well. Thinking of switching to the hard case...might check out the apache! At least for my higher end ones so they aren't getting flipped around and whatnot when I open the pacs
I just got a pelican case style hard plastic case. It used to be for my projector, which is now broken. I cut the foam so there's just a thin layer of it lining the hard plastic. The case is 18" x 12", my collection ain't big, so all my knives other than the 3-4 in the current rotation fits in the case.
MrCableguyken I want to get a vacuum sealer for food storage with the oxegin surpass packs to keep out the moisture, the vacuum machine is good to have I don't know if it will work on a 5 gallon bucket to suck all the air out of a milar bag?
My knives still in the box go in ammo cans. Throw in a dessicant pack and they are safe from corrosion, and easily accessible if I want to fondle them. Also the cans stack easily in my safe, away from sticky fingers........
I get why to go for the more affordable option, but when storing a couple grand worth of knifes in them its kinda silly to complain about an extra 60 dollars for a case to keep them in...
Not if you don’t intend on the case taking a beating. If you need a case with strength, then yes definitely spend the extra money. If you need a case that just holds your knives and sits in your room or somewhere in your house you might as well save the money for another knife
I have two Apache 3800's and love them. Harbor Freight puts out a 25% off coupon weekly and this becomes ~ $30. You're right, these go in my closet with two key locks to keep them secure. Enjoy!!!
I put my knives in a sterilite organizer 5 drawer thing. I lay them down and put them next to each other. It’s awesome because they are so easy to get to.
Just my two cents I store my knives that are from $1-600 bucks in a drawer or storage containers but I bought 2x7inch zip top bags that I keep them in so they don’t scratch each other but when I want one I can still see them through the bag. For my knives that are 600 and up they get the single folder cases with zippers and are kept in my temp controlled safe
I'm 15 I have about 13 knives or so ranging from a 4 dollar ozark trail knife to a 700 dollar limited edition benchmade infidel (I have a job I don't make my parents buy me everything) and I just made a 30 dollar case out of wood and foam it works pretty good
also on the argument below of pelican copied case.....one huge difference, pelican has a patented pressure release valve on the from and the harbor freight case AND EVERY OTHER case on the market uses the manual screw in/out valve.Sams Club sells a really nice 20" Maker Mark case for great price as well if you can find them on the shelf.
Harbor Freight has the 3800 on sale now and again for $29.99. I now have 2 and love them! Ihave it set up to hold 66 knives. 5 rows of 12 and the top row at 90° for additional 6. Now I need to find a way to store the boxes for the knives. ..
Do a knife collection video with all your knives. Or do a live feed so people could ask about specific stuff they see while you’re skimming through stuff.
I'm sure you may know this already but those kinds of cases draw moisture really badly you need some of the silicone packs in there to absorb any moisture or your blades will Rust
One thing I do that worked great: buy a pack of neodymium magnets. They’re extremely strong magnets. Easily hold 10-20 lbs. I snap them onto the walls or metal patio table and keep a knife attached to those magnets. They’re easy access anywhere in or out of the house
You can also put like a bike wire rope lock thing through those reinforced holes and go at go around something that can't be moved to keep it from getting stolen! Im gonna go get 1 or 2!
Mine are stored in a bunch of ammo cans that I put foam pads in. Something similar to this I guess, but made myself. My fixed blades are just in a drawer until I find a better way.
Lol! If you got people coming over with sticky fingers, it’s time to start reconsidering who you invite over. Good video, I think I’m going to get the pelican case with the foam cutouts made for folders. I think it holds 30 some knives.
I there's actually a company out there that makes pre cut foam inserts for the Apache case only problem is THEY CHARGE $80 FOR A 40 KNIFE PRECUT FOAM INSERT FOR the Apache Case and OVER $100 for the one that goes in the Pelican!!! I just seriously cannot believe that they charged twice as much as what the case cost 4 foam as it is already missing so you can't even cut it to the shape you want if you wanted but hey whatever some people got it like that I guess
theres a bit different foam from pelican and those apache also. one thing sucks is the room to apply stickers on the apache not much room.lol i have 2 pelicans and an apache, i need.another one now ,next time im near harbor freight gonna grab another one maybe 2 just so i have it.awesome video i did layout a bit different and only holds like 48 in mine but all symetrical. gonna have to pause.and see closer how you did yours
What are the interior dimensions of that apache case? Trying to figure out the size I will need to fit everything or if I should get 2. I think yours fits 72 so should be able to figure it out if you know the dimensions. Thanks bro
Got one today for 32 bucks with 20 percent off coupon, tax included. Can't beat that price. I'll use it for a couple semi autos and a couple knives. Good stuff.
Nice idea, good to know. Big question, where do you store your boxes ? Part of collecting is also having the box where the knives come in, with paperwork. I like to have the box with the knive. When I separate the two I always have trouble getting the right knife with the right box.
ggcuervo That’s what I did and it works perfectly! It’s an indescribable travel humidor. They also make foam specifically for use in humidors so I replaced it with that. It’s SO airtight you do have to open it once in a while just to let things breathe. But a couple Boveda packs will last damned near forever. 😀
Jeff will you please make a video/videos showing your whole knife collection pleaseeee. Maybe like a 20 minute video once a week talking about 10-20 of them? I just can’t get enough knives!!!
Pelican cases are great for storing and traveling with all kinds of stuff. Great for fragile stuff, expensive stuff, stuff you don't want to get wet, and you can lock them, just awesome although the cheaper knockoffs work just as great so I go for those. I have one pelican but a few STR8 brand, just as good and like half the price. Definitely check them out if our looking for that style of case. I agree on the "betterness" of the pelican to the knockoffs. Unless your submerging totally underwater or throwing it around then you'll be totally fine. Also they make great humidors since their air tight.
I have my $300+ knives in a draw with pick and pluck foam in it the draw is in my safe. All of my other knives are in cases similar to the one you bought I got mine from amazon and they are just like pelican cases. They are the amazon basic brand cases
I've read on forums that the pick and pluck foam will begin to pluck itself apart if you remove things frequently and if they are a snug fit in the hole. You seeing any evidence of this?
I do need to get me a few of those cases to store some tools and other stuff you can even bolt them down to something so they can't move it from the spot where it's bolted down unless they get through the lock and want to un bolt it.
I've got the 4800, excellent case, heavy when full, but awesome, I may get the 3800 for my auto and assistedand blades and leave the 4800 for the others
Brian Miller Haha, i definitely do that. I don't keep them in the boxes for the most part, but i do keep them in case i want to give them away or sell them. I started doing that about 12 years ago when I bought my first serious knife and I wasn't really thinking about becoming a collector, but I'm glad i did.
I do! Imo, why not? Somebody had to work to design the box, and usually it includes specs or just a nice logo. Toy/action figure collectors keep their boxes so I do the same
I use wooden display cabinets with drawers instead of the tall display cases. Got three of them for a good price and they all hold about 100 knives each, but I want to get a custom one made in teak or walnut in the near future :) By the way Jeff, what's the knives at 3:15 (third and fourth ones from the top on the left)?
I actually store mine in my dresser, I have one shallow droor, I don't know how to spell it but anyways I line them up all next to each other and I have my altoid cans with my coins in it and it's going to work well for a while until I need more room which will be a while I think.
for me I want like one of those that you can hang from your door with those clear pockets so I just open my closet or something and I can get to it easy
I use a old Navy Metal Chest to store my knives currently. Pelican cases are awsome just to expensive, I have a couple cheaper versions which are just as good for the price.
Hey Jeff, really interesting video. I have a couple of questions, I have several of the Spyderco "knife rolls" that I use to store some of my collection. I think these are very nicely made and relatively in-expensive for the storage capability. Also they are readily available at many places online. Do you have any experience with these? What is your take on them? My next question involves storage for fixed blades. Do you have a preferred method or system for fixed blade storage? I think it's a bit more complicated since the size varies SO much. I think some kind of "roll" solution would work, but I haven't found anything that seems to do the job out of the box. Any thoughts? Thanks again for a very informative and interesting video.
Jeff, just a heads up for you and your subs, eBay is having a 20% off sale on some items for 4th of July. There a ton of quality knives all 20% off. I just picked up a Mini Griptilian for 85 bucks.
Now I had one and still do love it to death but the foam was two soft it didn’t have any like strengths so it ripped in places but I notice that my friend had one and the Foam from pelican fit inside the Apache 3800 so I ordered the whole set bottom the pluck and the spikes all fit for 30 bucks on amazon
I recieved a apache 4800 as a gift, the larches not staying up when its opened is deal killer, I already had several pelican, condition1 and skb cases, the apache cases would due if it truly a budget issue
These cases are AWESOME! I have three sizes for gun stuff. Definitely check coupons and the HF website for discounts. I use plastidip to protect the foam from breaking out and abrading.
I just sold my pelican case because I needed more storage and I went out and bought 2 knock off cases that are the same size as the pelican case for the money I got from selling my 4 year old pelican.
Knife rolls were originally for chefs to keep and transport their knives, that's why they decrease in size, because chefs have sets of knives all different sizes.
I store my knives in a ammo can. I store my benchmade mini griptilian in my bolted safe. I would love to have one of these Apache cases but moneys tight.
7:30 is that a Bradley Kimura 3 on the left side? I have one of those, buit it's missing the latch, and the handles have separated from each other. I tried to see if i could get it repaired, but it looks like the company went out of business. Bummer.
There are definitely people who can help you out on Facebook. The page Balisong Flippers and Butterfly Knives has some great people who would be willing to help you fix it yourself or offer to repair it for a low cost.
spray the foam with Plasti Dip Black Aerosol Spray Coating 6 bucks a can and the foam pull outs and holes will hold up way longer....over time and use the pluck foam alone will fall apart.
Hey Jeff great video man as usual. I found something on amazon that is cool. It is a wood box kind of like a jewelry thing has 2 draws and on top a glass opening lid. It hols like 30 knives and it's compact.
#cutlerylover I use different storage options, as you do and I keep certain kinds together. I have my small collection of ones i give away to friends, then i keep my outdoor folders together in a Blade HQ knife roll. My EDC rotation is kept in a nice, wooden machinist tool chest along with multi-tools and flashlights. At the limits if that right now though, so will be looking into the Apache case. Thanks for the great discussion as always!!
