Marking gauges, Morticing gauges, panel gauges. how to set them up, how to sharpen them, and different uses. I want to run through all the marking gauges and see how they work.

Useful information. Just what I was looking for regarding a pin gauge.

Great intro and survey, useful tips too as bonus. I'd add that wheel gage makes non symmetrical 'groove', very nice for keeping one side of the mark very accurate, so great for joinery/dovetails.

I made my own Japanese style marking gauge back when I was in school. It works for almost everything. The one time I needed my wheel gauge was when I was making some drawers out of salvaged wall panelling, I was cutting through dovetails on them and I needed the wheel gauge to get into the moulded part. I suppose a gauge where the pin comes out the corner of the beam would have worked too. Maybe I'll make one of those.

+1 on trying out different types of gauges. I've picked up everything that you demonstrated (except the panel gauge) plus a Japanese marking gauge. One of the secondary benefits of going this route is that I can set a gauge up for the duration of a project and leave it that way until the end. If I need a gauge for another measurement or another project, then I still have another gauge for that. I've also learned that not all marking gauges are created equal. After using a Veritas wheel gauge at a Lee Valley seminar, I bought one because it just felt so much nicer than the XXX-brand one that I was using at home.

James I want to thank you I had no clue that the wheel gauge needs to be tight and not spinning which makes the marks a little wonky, I was so frustrated with my wheel gauge I replaced it with a Japanese style mortise gauge. I’m glad I still have the wheel gauge now that I will correct the wheel to be tight and not rolling. Thank you again and hope all is well with the family. Take Care

Very timely, James. I'm about to mark out my very first bridle and mortise/tenon joints. I don't have a wheel gauge but I have an antique Stanley Butt gauge that does the same thing unless my board is too wide. I learned several techniques today. Thanks. May we now pause a moment for silent prayer. :)

Thanks for this, James. Like Thom above, I have been consistently frustrated by the wheel coming loose and wobbly as it rotates. It honestly never occurred to me to lock it it down and use it as a knife. Seems so obvious now. I just finished a dovetail box for my dad, but will use this trick on the next one! p.s. I’ve been freeloading on your channel for too long (except a t-shirt and card scraper). Happy to now be a patron!

Given my habit of trying to cut to deep with a marking knife with all kinds of unfortunate results I have fallen in love with my japanese knife guage. By using an exacto blade with the slot I can incrementally increase the depth. The day I get fussy about half the thickness of the blade for accuracy is long past.

Totally agree with you on the rip marking with the wheeled guage, I just got a new Japanese guage delivered this week because I was fed up of the wheel drifting. I have the same Veritas wheeled one as you and dented the wheel and I haven't been able to find a replacement cutter. I ordered one and it was just a thin cutter without the shoulder. Will have to see if I can find one as it is unbeatable on the crosscut marking as you say.

Thank you very much for this discussion. I have a marking knife and a mortise gauge, both obtained from "HF". My question is, would there be any significant benefit to sharpening the pins on the mortising gage so they are flat and beveled on two sides, effectively becoming a tiny knife? Thank you.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 4 года назад
If the pins get dull then I would sharpen them. I use the same one from harbor freight.

Good job James. What do you think of making preset morticing gauges? I'm thinking maybe 2 or 3 with 2 pins set into the beam at my most used chisels width.

@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 4 года назад
I like a panel gauge to be about 24 in long in the beam. I have never needed to mark something longer than that. and if I do it's usually better to make a couple marks and strike it with a straight edge. I have a video on making this panel gauge if you want to see that.

Last time I was told to "go out and experiment" I woke up in cuffs.... jk. This video came in time for 2 reasons: 1) my marking gauge is getting a little dull and is tearing the wood a little and I wasnt 100% sure how to sharpen the pin, and 2) been wondering if a wheel marking gauge would be beneficial and I guess it just depends so for me answer is not right now.
