Watch our latest episode which details the rise of moissanite as an engagement ring center-stone. There are comparisons of moissanite vs diamonds and we go into detail on some of our newest custom moissanite ring designs.
Moissanites are lab created gemstones made to mimic the physical and optical properties of diamonds; they are cut into all the popular shapes such as round, cushion cut, radiant etc. They are also quite durable which makes it suitable for everyday wear in an engagement ring.
A lot of people ask what is the main difference between a moissanite and a diamond and how can you tell the two apart? Moissanites are about 80-90% less expensive than diamonds which is a also the major draw for many engagement ring shoppers. As far as the differences, moissanites give off more fire and spectral colors as part of its sparkle. Watch this educational video to learn more and see some close up examples of moissanite vs diamond as well some of our most popular moissanite engagement ring designs.

I really like how beautiful moissanite is. I love that it throws rainbows like that. I can tell the difference between them and diamonds, but I honestly think I prefer the moissanite. Especially when you add in the price difference, I can get a nice ring and a better honeymoon with the savings.

Absolutely. Its crazy how ridiculously expensive they are. I've been to tiffanies and cartier, vancleefs , so many..PRICES are crazy. A 0.90 carat was so small cost like $35, 000. Honestly make a person sick to realize how overly priced a tiny little rock is, cannot justify those prices NO matter how much I love diamond...im realizing over time, I just love sparkle...don't really care about diamonds, would still like one but not at those high-way robbery prices. really shameful. mossanite is gorgeous. Greatest thing I discovered too.

These are gorgeous. I was about to tell them all apart correctly, the moissanite is brighter and has more fire but the diamonds have more glitter or "crushed ice" sparkle. I think I do like the diamonds a little better (the glitter effect is really attractive) the fact that moissanite is much less expensive and most of all is produced ethically, would easily tip things in their favour.
@idkman2633

you are right, but at the same time, when you wear moissanite yo'll fall in love with the gem more and more everytime you experience how dazzling moissanite really it. Its stunning and costs enough too. moissanites are about $500 to $700 for solitaires (rounds) but when you buy fancy shapes they go up to like thousands.
@gardenglory6624
@gardenglory6624 5 лет назад
@LikesandLoves Thanks for the reply. Yes, ive seen mossanites that are horrible like that. My moissanite really does look like a Diamond its incredible. The more I wear it the more I love it and it has the small tiny sparkles you're talking about, but its a moody gem. Depending on the lighting...but its so beautiful....that is too bad. Real diamonds are so expensive. But there is a jewelry in our town that sells exquisite diamonds for about $12,000.00. Thank you.

I have a moissanite and I love it. I don’t think it means that you’re cheap it means that you have more important things to spend your money on. People don’t even realize you can have a 3 ct diamond ring and try to sell it and the only thing that matters is the weight of the gold in the ring. They don’t care about the diamond just the gold in the ring and that’s what you would be selling. 🤷🏾‍♀️

(And as Adam ruins Everything puts it, there’s no real reason for them to be that expensive, it’s a marketing ploy) I prefer all of those colors, and since I’m hella unique, I’m getting marquise cut, not a lot of people carry it

It baffles me how people expect "big" and "brilliance" yet get insulted when someone mentions the moissanite option. I would personally love a moissanite ring. Just all the rainbow light it captures is absolutely stunning. Who cares if it's a mine diamond or not. Another thing that baffles me is that when people talk about how vegan and environmental friendly they are yet insist on a natural diamond ring as an engagement ring. Environmentally friendly, you say? Maybe they should think about things like that before judging someone who eats meat. I don't know about you guys, but I am running into these types of people more and more where I am from.

@granteedev7969
@granteedev7969 4 года назад
Um so much misinformation in such a short post. First of all, "flashes" are not something which can be assigned a monetary value such as "cheap". A well cut CZ does not look markedly different from a diamond, so if CZ has "cheap flashes", then so does diamond. Second, CZ does not have birefringence (which you mistakenly call double refractive). Third, although moissanite has birefringence, that is only along one optical axis, which when cut properly and viewed face up will be almost impossible to see from face down. The reason some diamond cuts don't work in moissanite is simply because some diamond cuts don't work on moissanite - just as some moissanite cuts don't work in diamond. Fourth, although diamond is "singly refractive", its refractive index causes it to be less maximally brilliant than moissanite Fifth, diamonds do have fire... but less than either CZ or Moissanite, because they have a lower dispersive index. Moissanire has more brilliance and more fire than diamond. CZ has less brilliance but more fire than diamond. All three are gorgeous stones and cheapness is a subjective trait, mostly a result of individual bias.

Naturally - I agree it is very easy to tell the difference to me also - for me, the rule I heard YEARRRRRSSSS ago, was the "fireworks" being too much/ gives it away as not a real diamond (contrary to what so many people might assume or thing), & it still seems to be the same case, this has just reminded me - but, they are still lovely in their own right. I don't have any diamonds, right now, I'm kind of feeling gem stones if I'm honest. But the fact of the matter is, I haven't really cared for quite some time now, but.. particularly after this reminder, if someone came up to me and tried to say to me that a ring such as this morganite was real, I would absolutely just as I had been able to tell in the past, that it is not a real diamond. To my eye it's the purple flecks that give it away. Real diamonds do not have that. Anyway. I think that people should get and like what they enjoy.

I feel like the difference really does come down to the cut and setting. Simpler and slimmer settings I think favor moissanite due to its ability to stand out against your hand, whereas the more complex/intricate shape rings that gives diamonds something to contrast against (halos for example) really make the diamond pop. The more uniform the shape the harder it is for me to tell the difference.

Comes down to the cut and color of the sparkle and the different type of sparkle.

For our 20th, I asked my husband for either a cushion or emerald/step cut. Love them!!! Beautiful settings. I also think the table and culet are much larger on a Moissanite than their diamond equivalent counterpart.

I purchased a 2ct moissanite w 40vs accent diamonds in a solitaire style today...Im really excited to get if from my jeweler. I paid 4G..I purchased the FOREVER ONE Moissanite..which I believe is the highest quality stone you can buy in the Moissanite...at 1300$ for my stone compared to real diamond equiv. at 13,000$..for me it was any easy choice.

I got them all and I would choose the moissanite. The diamonds always give off a yellow Hugh. The diamond shows its Origen, rock, dirt and you just can't clean it enough to make it as clear or have the sparkle of the fake diamond. I love the radiant cut....probably the most expensive because of the waste in cutting it. But I love the princess cut, I believe, even more. Then you said something about the 2 of them. I can't afford my taste, but Liz and I have the same b-day or one day apart...lol

Barbara mowrey...I'm a Diamontologist and you couldn't be more wrong. Moissanite are easy for me to spot because it has a kind of greenish/yellow hue. I was noticing he was comparing them to diamonds of a j-k color which has a lot of yellow in them. I wish he would have compared to a colorless diamond (DEF) which has zero yellow in it so you could have seen the difference, I don't understand what you're saying about cleaning the diamond to make it clear. Clarity is measured and is on its cert...the imperfections are inside the diamond. Buy a high clarity diamond if you want it to be "clean" It is true that moissanites sparkle more because they are double refractive which means for every strand of light that goes into the stone, 2 come out split into the rainbow colors. That is another reason I can tell them apart from diamonds in a hot second. They are pretty, but they look absolutley nothing like a diamond to me. I wouldn't buy one because I think they look close enough to a diamond that you can fool people at first glance but off enough that they'll figure it out quick...then I feel like I'm trying to present something that's not real. I would consider it in a different color, like pink just because it's kind of unique. Also, at least in the diamond world, radiant are not as expensive as other cuts; the most waste comes from a round stone.

Side by side comparisons can definitely make it easy for people to pick up the differences. Separately I think the average eye (non professional ) would have a much harder time being able to tell a diamond from a Moissanite . My wedding rings were done custom from my husbands uncle who is a jeweler so he taught me a lot about diamonds ,he only dealt with diamonds back then and has since retired ,I think it’s great that you offer alternative, less costly gems to your customers yet you still set them in these absolutely beautiful settings , the setting makes the ring , sure I’ve seen other companies doing it for less , but I am a true believer in you get what you pay for ! Your designs are some of the best I’ve seen ,Diamond ,Moissanite or any other gem ,my eyes are drawn to your settings ! This is a great video ! Keep Em coming

I have two natural diamonds in my toi et moi ring, even though moissanites are beautiful, I feel like the inherent value is just different. I've always wanted my ring to be a modern heirloom with a diamond as apposed to a diamond alternative. I also wanted my ring to have warm stones that give off an old-money vibe (my diamonds are so warm the jeweler said he would classify them as faint champagne, all the moissanites I've seen are near colorless). I'm happy there are alternatives for those who don't feel right spending a lot of money on natural diamonds, though. They are similar unless you are trained to the eye!

I got them all correct and I always do. If you'll notice, the most obvious dispersion of light both on the Moissanite and on the diamond is the blue color. You will always see the Moissanite disperse considerably more blue than the diamond. I understand Moissanite dispersion is higher than diamond so ALL colors are dispersed greater in the Moissanite but the blue is the most obvious color you can spot quickly than other more pastel colors.

Mossanite has more fire than a diamond. I know everyone wants a diamond, but most can’t tell the difference and would you have the embarrassment of asking is that really a diamond. Personally I prefer the mossanite, but make sure you get the certificate of a genuine mossanite that should come with it.

The way to tell the difference is the diamond seems to have way more facets while the moissanite is wider Another thing that sets them apart in my opinion the fire in a moissanite is more obvious especially in the blue throw I have expensive taste so naturally I gravitated to the diamond rings before they even confirmed they were diamonds If I could have a moissanite or a cz or a white sapphire that has the crushed ice look I would go that route!

Moissanite, (Silicone Carbide) like Curbic Zirconia (CZ) previously, was going to challenge diamonds in the marketplace place and although both are relatively inexpensive to manufacture, they were both sold at outrageous prices when first introduced by the Jewelry industry. Now CZ can be purchased for pennies a carat.

I asked my husband specifically for Moissanite for my engagement ring. It has more fire and clarity than many of my friends' 2 and 3 carat diamonds. We've been married for 11 years and it is still as gorgeous as it was the day he proposed. In fact, I have 2 channel set diamond bands and my Moissanite solitare puts them to shame when it comes to brilliance. And my bands are very, very high quality diamond bands.

Oh wow. this is great, because I have to get my rings remade because the original jeweller screwed up my rings., Thank Goodness my moissanite it super gorgeous, I want to get it remade to have real diamond channel settings on each side and a wedding band in channel setting too, real diamonds, SO they do look good, im just afraid that it will all change in the sun because diamonds looks different form moissanites. I hope it works out. My new Jeweler says it will look stunning and you cannot tell them apart. Do you have gold setting or white gold..I have white gold in my screwed up rings but am considering yellow Gold, not too many people are getting that anymore. Thank you.

Moissanite diamonds are stunning and sparkles beautifully. The real diamond are very nice but very expensive. Depends on your budget and what you like. As demonstrated between the emerald cut moissanite diamond and real diamond. It is a little harder to tell the real thing. It's a amazing how the moissinate diamond looks.

It's all a matter of opinion. I like diamonds a lot more and their beauty is second to none IMO. If I want to save money I will go with a lab diamond. I don't see uniqueness in a moissanite as it's sparkle reminds me of a CZ which also sparkles rainbow.

The oval diamond looks crushed-ice cut, the second the same...it might be only the lighting but it looks that the diamonds are in disadvantage in this competition due to the lesser quality cut. The round cuts don't look like flawed. It seems very good cuts. I found very easy to tell them apart, I guessed which one is what without one mistake in the first seconds you put the two stones next to each other. Nice VDO, thank you, it was both fun and instructive.
