I freaking love that you said all natural products aren’t what they are cracked up to be. There is so much misinformation out there. Thanks for keeping it real!
The terms "organic" and "natural" are vague at best and lack scientific backing, yet people treat these terms as such when they use the even more vague argument that all-natural does not have "chemicals". Well, having taken chemistry I can say that everything is a chemical so you can't use that term inherently as something negative.
This reminds me of when my chemistry teacher made this point and followed with water is a chemical. She seemed super annoyed because they where painting the hallway and someone said they didnt want to breath in the chemicals
Super agreed. It's just false marketing. In fact, many essential oils can be sensitising to the skin. Some like lemon oil extract can actually cause photophytodermatoses, which in contact with the sun can cause a bad burn.
Today, january 3th 2019, still watching videos from almost 2 years ago, SO HELPFUL and clarifiying and MYTH BREAKING! Happy new year Dr. Dray! Greetings from Paraguay-South America! Just figure how far you´ve come!
As a moisturizer or a tanning enhancer? I know my friends used to rub actual butter on themselves then lay in the sun, back in the 80’s. Soooo bad, haha.
The most helpful video from Dr.Dray so far)) I watch a lot of your content but it mostly about new products and brands now without touching basic medical information. This one however is a number one to see if you are a woman with any skin type or any age wanting to improve your skin and to maintain its health! Great job 👏
You are so amazing and knowledgeable! You have helped me simplify my skincare so much. I feel terrible thinking how gullible i was and a slave to the cosmetic industry.
Great video! I've felt for a long time that "natural" and "organic" products were more harmful to my skin than those containing the ingredients some are claiming to be bad for us. Can't wait for Monday's video. Have a great weekend.
I used neutrogena hyaluronic moisturizer. i damp it on my face when its dry! haha! i should have now damp it on my wet face so it will be more effective! thanks for that tip!
Dr Dray I’m so confused about Hyaluronic Acid now. My doctor who treats my skin says it’s not particularly useful topically and is more of an internal skin moisturizer. But Dr Dray, you’re a skin specialist, and she studied internal medicine, which (correct me if I’m wrong) is not a specialty, but a standard GP MD degree; correct? She just happened to start, own and operate a skin care/spa practice for whatever reason, and she’s good, I just trust the more educated specialist. So I’m going to tend to trust you more; but I do need to look thru your channel to find where you state the clinical trial data. For me, that’s the MOST important parts of your ingredient feature videos 😊👍🏻
I wanted to subscribe and finally clicked the darn button! I love your videos as I find myself very confused about moisturizers, both for the body and the face! Thanks for this information so much and I'm going to get aquaphor for my dry lip issue!
I buy a couple pairs of ‘sacrificial’ sweats to use on heavy moisturization nights. That way I don’t stress over getting my PJs or sheets greasy. I shower, use Amlactin where needed and slather on my favorite occlusive moisturizer of the month. I then hop into my sweats and sleep in them. This is my favorite moisturizing routine year round.
I so so love these sit-down 'interviews' with you! I feel like I need to grab a pen and notebook and take notes!! It appeals to the education nerd in me!! The hype over parabens has been in the forefront of my personal research for the last few years and I have switched SOOOOO many products because as a mom, I sure didn't want to have products that would cause my kids to have cancer. I am not sure why this issue became such a big deal~ unless it was great for the competitors to have Paraben free stuff and make a fortune there too! Thanks for putting us at ease about what is truly dangerous and what is advertising lies!!!
Thank you for another informative video! You kept me company while I ate my lunch at my desk... lol! :) I can't wait to see your video on Monday. Have a great weekend! xox
Another super helpful, informative video. Thank you so much for taking the time for ALL of your videos. I'm slowly making my way through them, and I learn something from each one 😁
Great vlog as always! I look forward to getting my notification each day that your vlog is up! I've learned so much and have been able to simplify and modify my skincare routine thanks to your wonderful advice. Thanks for educating us and taking the time to share your expert advice with us! Question I'm curious about : I've had chronic eczema my whole life which l treat with otc moisturizers and prescription corticosteroids for my flareups. Is it possible that this is due to an immune system dysfunction/disorder? Is it worth it to undergo testing to find out, or better to just focus on treatment alone?
Hey Dr Dray :) I've only recently started to watching your channel in the past few weeks, safe to say i'm addicted :D. Thanks to you I now know sunscreen is important and wear it everyday and try and stick to the shade and cover up as much as i can :). I was just wondering on your thoughts on Propylene Glycol in skin care? as i see it a lot in skin care with salicylic acid in, there seems to be a varying opinions and evidence on it. So just wanted to see what your thoughts are on the matter :) Hope all is well, keep up the great content :D
Thanks for a through explanation of moisturizing ingredients. My personal favorite still remains to be CeraVe moisturizing lotion. I think it's an ideal combination of occlusives, humectants, and emollients with added benefits of ceramides and cholesterols. Perfect for face and body both. Eucerin advanced repair body lotion is a close second simply because it's not suitable for face, less versatile than CeraVe. Can't wait for the Monday video. I'm pretty certain CeraVe and Eucerin will be in your list ;) Thank you and enjoy Friday :)
Thank you so much for your support to help us understand our bodies. I bought some Coolibar clothing for me and my husband. I love my white hoodie jacket. eBay is also an inexpensive choice for Coolibar. They sale there also.
I'm not sure where this fear of petroleum, mineral oil and parabens started but I wish it would stop! Thanks for your efforts to educate us all. Great review of all the types of products out there. You've given me something to think about regarding fragrance. Fragrance rarely bothers me and I often thought that since I can "tolerate it", I don't need to worry. But... hypersensitivity can occur later. Hmmm. Great points and food for thought when I go make my next skincare purchase. Thanks for all of these great tips and reviews!
Dr Dray your videos are so informational and interesting!👏🏽 I didn’t hear any examples of the Therapeutic class of body moisturizers. Can you please share some of those for my older, dry body skin? Also have I missed a review of the Olay products? I’d love to hear your thoughts on their micro sculpting creams, etc! Thank you so much! I’m now watching your videos and taking notes!😲🤗
Definitely the best and most informative skincare videos on RU-vid. Love getting info from an expert :) can you please recommend moisturisers for acne/acne prone skin. I've been jumping from oils to creams, so any suggestions would be highly appreciated! Thank you in advance :)
Thanks to you Dr Dray, I've discovered coconut oil is useful as a cleanser. I had some that I was going to use on my body but it doesn't sink into my skin. It is brilliant for removing makeup and sunscreen though! Sorry, mineral oil is horrible for my skin. I use a sorbolene cream for removing makeup with mineral oil in it but my skin breaks out with mineral oil, even at 50!
Have had problems for the last 2 years with my finger tips and thumbs. It starts with deep crevice cuts on my thumbs, pointer and middle fingers and then progresses until the top layer of skin peels off leaving a very painful condition. The skin on my finger tips crack and peel down to first knuckle but the thumbs both peel down to the second knuckle (inside palm side only) I have had prescriptions of Clobetasol Propionate Cream (from primary doctor) and then, on advice of dermatologist, have used CeraVe Moisturizing Cream. Neither worked and I then tried several over the counter remedies (on advice of acquaintances) such as Eucerin, O'Keeffe's Working Hands, Bag Balm, Aloe, and many others. Everyone offering advice, of course, insisted their recommendation was the best thing in the world for curing my problem. Nothing has worked. I occasionally get 2 or 3 days of relief only to have the process start all over again. All ten finger nails are also noticeably extremely dry by sight and feeling and I'm wondering if this is indicative of a vitamin deficiency or something that I'm lacking.
I just discovered your channel very recently and just started to binge watch everything. Do you have a video on popular plant oils for the face (argan oil, marula oil, maracuja oil, sea buckthorn etc)? Was wondering if purchasing any of these are necessary. Also wondering there is significant difference between these expensive, exotic oils? Every time I go shopping for anti aging skin care, I always get recommended to buy these oils. Would love to see a video on these if you don't have one already. Thanks so much for all the skincare tips!
Excellent Q&A! I've been wanting this. Looks like the combo body moisturizers would be a great bet! Regarding the humectant tip specifically when using the hydro boost water gel... does this require an occlusive mousitizer on top in order for it to function properly? With out the occlusive moisturizer on top does that mean that you would have more TEWL? Thank you again! I love these videos! So fun but also educational!!'
I just realized that the hydro boost water gel also has the occlusive agent dimethicone mixed in with the humectant HA .. so I guess that solves the problem as far as furthering TEWL when using HA alone?
Thank you for recommending Kerasal for gently exfoliating dry and cracked skin on the heels. I have been applying it nightly and can already see and feel a difference. Thanks for the body care basics. What is your opinion of using glycolic acids on the body to increase skin cell turnover?
Thanks! Propylene glycol is a fantastic ingredient as well. I am not really a fan of using too much glycolic acid on the face, but fine in body moisturizers and can be helpful for dry flaky skin
Dr Dray whats your beef with glycolic acid as a daily exfoliant? Dr neal shultz a fellow youtubing dermatologist says its the "gold standard" of exfoliants. I feel confused now :(
@@gollyster oh dear. Not professional to comment about another doctor's opinion. It's likely Dr Dray may not comment about this beyond what she has already stated
I enjoyed this video a lot. I'm so tired of the paraben, mineral oil, petrolatum & talc phobia! The same people forget that talc & parabens are in your everyday medicines. What's take on phenoxyethanol? I read the EU guideline, ever since I don't buy products that have phenoxyethanol high up in the ingredients list.
Thanks ms shayri! Again...these "fear this fear that" ingredient lists are unclear to me, but I see know harm for skin care products containing this ingredient.
2 questions: are natural carrier oils such as avocado oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil, etc. effective as moisturizers for dry skin on the body? Paula's Choice website has said that creams that are packaged in jars lose their effectiveness when exposed to the air. Is that true, and if so, one would then assume that a bottled product is better than a jar?
the paula's choice website information is not correct with regards to jar packaging; natural oils, like shea/avocado/grapeseed/linseed are fine, but not any better (sometimes less robust actually) than a jar of thick drug store fragrance free cream
Thank you for the great videos. I love them. A quick question is to do with ice cubes and whether you do think a gentle massage using them is beneficial or helps the appearance of skin even temporarily
What do you think of the presence of alcohol in skincare? A lot of brands seem to keep on that track while there is quite a lot of controversy around alcohol.
This is not a problematic ingredient outside of toners which are sort of like putting rubbing alcohol on the skin and are too harsh. As an ingredeint in skin care it often is needed to stabilize active ingredients
hi dr. dray! I only found out your vids last night and I cant stop watching them all! they are very informative and your routines are easy to follow, thank you for sharing your expertise with us. :) i'm suffering from acne for years now so im always in hunt of ways to get rid of it. i went to different dermatologist but they did not help me. i was prescribed to use cetaphil bar soap, differin and benzac (which worked) but did not totally stopped my acne so i was prescribed to stop using them and just take up isotretinoin. i took isotretinoin for months but that cause me more breakouts (like cystic acne all over my face) so i decided to stop just go back to using cetaphil soap. do you think i can go back to using differin cream while using cetaphil soap anti-bac soap? or it is better with other cleanser? thank you dr. dray :) ❤
Thanks so much!! Keep going with what works for you and try and follow up with your dermatologist regularly, since it sounds like your acne has been tough and differin alone may not be enough for you :)
Dr Dray thank you for being so responsive and helpful. i want to try your routine as i never use sunblock and moisturizer before. maybe that is also the reason why i keep on having breakouts. unfortunately,i couldnt find cerave and neutrogena moistutizer here in dubai. are there alternatives? thank you :)
Great video. What do you think about using oils, like sesame or coconut, as your body moisturizer? Thank you for all of the fantastic information you provide. I am looking forward to Monday's video! I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
Loving these Q&A videos! I have one that maybe you could address at some point. All my friends are into essential oils and rubbing them on every little ailment on their skin. You mention staying away from botanicals. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on these in particular, and why they have become so popular with every mom friend I know selling one brand or another. My friend will have some rash in her armpit...put some lavender oil on it! Another will have a sunburn...wait....I have an oil for that to slather on. Ha!
@DrDray would you ever consider doing a segment on men’s brands like Clinique and also dermalogica brand I’m so very interested in your thoughts on the men’s skincare lines at ulta
This was a great video and helped a lot! :) I do have a question about moisturizers that contain cetyl alcohol. Does cetyl alcohol clog pores and have the potential of making acne worse?
Dr. Dray, I have been trying to figure out what causes congestion in my skin .... can you talk about those ingreidents or products that causes conhestions... talk about facial oil too please
Skin congestion is not actually something that is defined in dermatology, at all. I only hear this term from you all in the comments. If you mean acne-promoting or "pore clogging" there is no slam dunk ingredient that does this to avoid and is individual dependent.
Being in the the cosmetic business all my life. You think I would know. What are peptides? I keep seeing videos of people using them. What does a older person like myself need daily for anti aging. I like to stay simple ( cleanser toner serum and moisturizer ) I do use Retin a
peptides are building blocks of proteins and on their own have roles in human biochemistry...applying them to skin is a huge gimmick; stick with retin A and sunscreen
Dr Dray, you are quickly becoming my favorite youtuber! :) Recently, I read both Dr Obagi and Dr Hauskha are anti mosturizer for daily use because it'll make the skin become dependent and over time produce less hydration. Some bloggers even say heavy mosturizer will weigh their skin down and sag. Both are bold claims with probably very little research to back up. Still interesting to ponder and make one more confused... as if life isnt more confusing enough. Ha!
Than you so much for your expertise and review of everyday products. It has been so helpful when purchasing OTC products and not the expensive department stores. Q: have you or can you please do a review of the Lumene product line. (CVS and Walgreens) I’ve been using their facial moisturizers for day and night. Q: do we really need two different moisturizers for day and night?
I have just recently found your channel and so I apologize is you have answered this question or if you have a video on it, but wanted to ask about coconut oil. What is your opinion on it? It seems to work really well for me, but I wasn’t sure. I used it all over my body including my face. It is just 100 % coconut oil (Shea Moisture brand from Walmart). Thanks so much. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Hi Dr. Dray, what are your thoughts on dimethicone or other silicones on the skin for those of us that are acne prone? Your videos have been really helpful btw! I've started using the Alba Botanica salicylic acid wash on my face, and it seems to be helping so far! Finally, someone that makes logical sense regarding skin care on the internet. Thank you!
I'm so glad I watched this video. I had a doctor who performed a laser procedure on me, recommend a product that cost over 300 that contained or stimulated stem cells. Of course I didn't buy it.
Thank you for the wealth of good information. I agree with how OTC vs med grade skin care products can be no different, but I do wonder why derm clinics offer them then?
I’ve asked the doctor who treats my skin about this; and she disagrees. Whether or not her opinion is profit driven is certainly open to interpretation, but I suspect not. I think she feels far more confident recommending a product that she can receive a full disclosure of all ingredients, from the company making the product, as well as the source of the ingredients and quality of them, and the concentration they are in. Some over the counter products May not have the ‘beneficial’ ingredient in an appreciable enough amount to provide results. I think if you’re using OTC, and it’s working, AWESOME!! Personally I never had much luck with OTC, and have had to invest in more pricy lines, but still quite reasonable. I use a lot of EltaMD and NeoCutis. Have a great week 😊😊
Hi! What do you think of a moisturizer that contains following ingredients: Aqua, decyl oleate, butylene glycol, cetearyl alcohol (and) cetaryl sulfate, PEG-6 stearate, Apricot Kernel oil PEG-6 esters, PEG-32 stearate, glycol stearate, phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin ? And how about this one: Aqua, petrolatum, paraffinum liquidum, cetearyl alcohol, ceteareth-20, ceteareth-12, caprylyl glycol, sodium gluconate, phenoxyethanol? I hope you have time to answer :) Ps. I love your videos!
New here u r ine smart lady who knows her stuff I'm 43 now and really never had used anything on my.fsce but now I'm getting older I want to take.care of my face it's.dull looking like I'd love to have.my.young skin back should I wash my.face every.mirning with an exfoliate then moisturize VERY INFORMATIVE
You should use it that much,, but maybe a medium to light moisturizer for the morning and a medium to heavy moisturizer at night, it depends on your skin and sometimes you dont need to use it every day and night sometimes just at night or just in the morning is good enough :)
Dear dr Dray. You are really a treasure of knowledge! Really like the way you speak, one can tell that you are very educated. Thank you so much! Learned so much from you.
