Nitro engines used to be the only source of power for RC planes and helicopters -- in the days before electric motors became as powerful as they are now. This video offers newcomers to the hobby, a raft of information about nitro engines, how they work and what to consider if you're thinking of powering an RC plane with one.

I try to learn something new everyday, and after more than 35 years of playing with every type of radio control vehicle you still helped me achieve that goal for today! I already knew most of the information that you spoke of in your video, but all of that knowledge that I have came from years of experience that were either frustrating, expensive, or both. I would have given anything to have this information available to me all those years ago. Keep up the good work.

have you ever tried to adjust a nitro engine? it needs to be hot and running to test, if its spluttering it has too much fuel, if it sounds like echo and runs very hot, it lean. if its seized up, it was lean. if the rpm is climbing high out of control, iiiiiii pobre ti

@@bartsshorts Never, I always ran methanol engines - fuel is way cheaper than nitromethane!
@KB-zq9ck
@KB-zq9ck 4 года назад
Most important maintenance of a nitro engine is the after run of a nitro engine. The methanol corrodes the alloy but the Nitro attacks the alloy, when this happens the nitro "Pitts" the alloy leaving tiny pin sharp shards. These shards break off under combustion and score the sleeve, and also, finds its way into the bearings or bushings whatever the case me be. After a days running I unplug the models fuel line from the carburetor. I have a seperate fuel tank with 100% methanol, and I run the 100% methanol for about a minute to burn out the nitro from the engine. One thing to know is when switching from nitro of any content to 100% methanol, the engine will run lean for a 20 to 30 seconds than fall off high idle when all the nitro is burned out of the engine and then run at a more respectable idle. I use my finger much like a throttle exhaust to limit the rpm by placing my finger over the tuned pipes stinger and blip the pipe to keep the rpm's down until the nitro is completely burnt out of the engine. After the nitro burn out I use Marvels Mystery Oil as a after run lube. Ten years on an engine and the internals are like brand new with no ugly darkening. It is what it is.

I've found so many cool things about nitro engines recently (and learnt a lot a bout combustion on the side) that It really makes me want to build an old-school trainer, use all the cool radios and servos we have now and fly high alpha like I used to do with my dad's planes. But now that you mention tuned pipes man that opens a whole new world of cool ideas I didn't know how much power they could add. Also there is quite a few smaller gas engines now, and I'm sure with some fuel additives they can get to close to the power to weight ratios of glow engines, without the mess.

Brilliant video and well produced and everything explained in a simplified way. Im flying model aeroplanes since May 1986. My first plane was an MFA YAMAMOTO with an OS 40 two stroke. The vast majority of my planes are glow planes both two stroke and four stroke. I do have a few electric planes and I enjoy them too everybit as much. But I still love to hear my fourstrokes and I still love to see a smoke trail across the sky for realism. Enjoyed this video very much. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve flown glow for probably 25 years but I still enjoyed this video and I’d like to see more glow back in the hobby. Electric started out as a novelty and now is mainstream and glow is the novelty. My experience: Remove the engine head and carb and dismantle as much as possible without doing damage to stuck parts. Throw everything into a bucket and submerge in nitro fuel.
