You can dress up the stock ponds and make them look nice if youre handy like that. You can even buy one of Greg's/Aquascape's pump and a Bio Falls if you want filtration.

The pond at Aquascape is truly fantastic, BUT, the pond at Greg's house (or what WAS his house before he moved to Oregon or Idaho or where ever he moved to) was nothing short of Amazing.

The slow flowing bog filter is one of the best biological filtration systems you can use in a pond ( only my opinion of course) . Full of beneficial bacteria as well as the denitrifying bacteria if the flow is correctly set for the lower o2 zones. Flushed once a year minimal work and always have crystal water, even with messy goldfish , plants optional but definitely looks better with. I enjoyed this video for a change 👍🏼

I have an 800L pond on my back veranda. I got the shell off Marketplace for $200, got some limestone blocks for $50 & started with a DIY filter & spillway setup. I eventually upgraded to an Oases Biopress filter & a polishing canister filter & a birdbath water feature. I love it, the sound of the water is so soothing & the lights are on a timer so in the evening I get the shadows of the goldfish on the ceiling. I''ve rescued several fish from tanks that were far too small for them. My oldest is a 30cm 10 year old fantail that came from a 90L tank 3 years ago.

It was a quite a while ago…I live on the big island of Hawaii where we have volcanos. Going off every now and then. I was I believe the long lasting Kilauea eruption time, where many pond keepers lost their beautiful fish to pele’s hair, which is strands of glass thrown up by the lava. It still is sad to think about fish dying like that.

Aquascape has a new pond in yhe back that has a massive observasion window in it. I've been to Aquascape a dozen times over the last few years and I didn't even know they had the display ponds out back, because there's no obvious "path" to get to them. You have to walk through the parking lot, but it's worth it.

I LOVE my summer tubs! Love finding the plants at local family owned greenhouses and watching them grow in the water.

Barrowed my neighbors backhoe, a roll of liner and a filter. A few hundred bucks and mine has been running and pumping out babies for over a decade. Just clean the filter once a month and nothing else.

I'm so sad, because in Alaska it's just not really doable unless I get a massive slice of land and manage a fishing pong that gets stocked every year... But my brother in law builds ponds down in the lower 48 and SOMEDAY if I end up moving I hope we can work on something rad!

We have had our DYI pond a few years. I enjoyed the show! You didn't touch on what wiped us out or gave us issues which is blue herons and mink. We had a mink completely empty our small pond of koi and goldfish. We lost at least one giant koi in our big pond and a big one in our small pond to the blue herring. Stabbed through and left for dead. I almost shut the small pond down after that mink it was heart breaking. For the past couple years I put chicken wire around it before first ice and keep it up until the first of may and the mink move on. The big pond is void of koi I believe, but at 3/4 acre there isn't much I can do. I'm glad you are enjoying the new pond 😊

It won’t be til next year that I do it but I’m gunna set up a 100g stock tank pond with a bog filter. Use some insulation board to winterize it and build a deck board frame to keep it looking nice. Might even wire up a spotlight for night time viewing. 👍 This hobby has me hooked now 😂

Great I needed this episode. I was gifted a white tub to make a small pond. Can't figure out how I would disguise the white plastic on the outside. Inside I'll just slap a pond liner in. Thinking about doing it as the bottom pool and frame the top part out with cinder blocks... how would yall disguse the tub? Think some brown paint might help lol

What about buying live daphnia for the algae problem just before it starts? Also has anybody ever raised a brood of Betta fry in the tub or pond for just the summer months?

👍🤠 Ferris Buelers Day Off… one of my favorites. I saw opening day at Gramens Chinese Theater, Mathew Broadwick was there. Pretty cool. John, yep Racks pond is awesome. Have you seen Mel’s (Hawian Fish keeper) pond, it’s DIY by him and a friend. I’d say as nice as Rack’s.

You can build a nice DIY pond for a couple thousand. All it takes is a strong back and hard-working teenage son to help.

I set up a 6 by 7 ft pond. It's clear but I think there is not enough nutrients in the water because the new large lily that was added has melted away. What do you think the cause was?

As a technician, have you tried thumping the gear hard? I would love a pond, around here the fish would be outside for 2 months then back inside. If I had the money I would have a pond built with viewing windows so I can see in to the huge aquarium I paid way to much for. I would consider combining hobbies a make a garage attached that look out into the pool with an upper story to look down at it. Yes I am a car and fish nerd. :)

Not counting the contractor, how much would a setup doing all your own work cost?

I know I'm not John or Jason, but I think I'm safe in saying, that that question really can't be answered without knowing what you're looking to put in. Thwre are just too many variables. John's pond is medium/small for what Aquascape builds and as he said, the rock and stone alone cost him $5,000. You'll need to rent heavy equipment to move said rock, because even the small ones weigh hundreds of pounds and the large ones can tip the scales at over a ton. Then you're looking at liner that's sold by the foot. Then you have to factor in the hoses and hardware and pumps. The skimmer and biofalls (the large biofall is hundreds of dollars - I know because I've looked) will run you over a 1k by themselves. There are lights and electrical costs. It all boils down to what you want to do and how many bells and whistles you're going to go with. I've seen where small ponds can cost $10k and then there are ponds they've built that run several million dollars.
