One of the major problems Hoya parents might encounter is root rot. 😭 As day length gets shorter and light level decreases, Hoya often have trouble utilizing the same amount of water as in summer. ❄🌿🌥When the medium stays too wet for too long, root rot might occur.
In this video, we'll discuss: 👀
- What is root rot?
- Reasons that cause root rot
- Symptoms of root rot
- How to prevent and treat root rot
You can find the equipments I use to grow my plants below: ⬇️

Now I can officially confirm that my Hoya Hindu rope has root rot issue! It was quite helpful to see the example of actual problem root. Thanks

I’m propagating my 3 varieties of Hoya to get more. I’m under watering my Kerrii- at least I think I am

I really appreciate hearing that you only use water to rinse the remaining roots. I tried a diluted peroxide rinse on a krimson princess and it took the plant weeks to recover from the shock. Last time I do that! 😂 This was so helpful. Thank you!!!

I can’t believe I missed this video! Now it’s too late 😞 have to restart some hoyas due to inconsistent watering 🤦🏻‍♂️

Oh no!!! No big deal though. I killed many Hoya because I noticed root rot too late, but that how I learned. Hoya are pretty easy to propagate. I'm sure you'll have some new beautiful plants in no time. 😆

Thank you so much for this helpful video! I have the same occurrence of root rot on my 20 year old hoya so I made the stem cuttings to try and propagate the plant and cleaned the rot from the roots of the original plant as you described in the video. However, as it is a very old plant, the root base is thick, wooden and there were no tiny white roots to save. I left a bit of a of foliage on top of the plant that I hope it will pick up the growth from. I had to cut most of the stems tho because the leaves on them began to shrivel. My question is whether it would hurt to try and wait for the new roots to develop by submerging the old wooden root part in the water (like with cuttings) instead of putting it in the soil with literally no tiny white roots? I'm afraid the foliage will die before the new roots develop to feed them and water might be quicker to feed whatever of the plant is still alive. Thank you!

Sorry that happened to you! It really depends on how bad and extensive the root rot is. I would recommend trim off as much dead or rotten roots as possible. Then pot the plant in a really well draining mix. Also trim off the dead or shriveled leaves (assuming there's not a lot of them) would help the plant to recover faster as it decreases the burden for the demanged root system.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm on my 2nd Hoya Obovata and this one has root rot. I did wash and cut off the rotted roots. I have only had this one for 2 weeks, I ordered it and the seller did say don't water for a few days so I did wait to water. I gave it a good soak after and it never really dried out which I believe resulted in the root rot. My question is can I use a fungicide on the roots and can I just put it in water to get it growing? Or can I put it in leca or should I just use the mix of bark. perlite and soil? It has one leaf left on each stem left so Its pretty well established, even though It has dropped several original leaves. Thank you!

I'm glad the video helps! Yes you can use fungicide. You can water root the plant. I perosnall use moss or coco coir to root Hoya. I actually did a in depth, step by step propagation video a while back. Feel free to check in with. It may help. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Rrnaj6dki5o.html

I was so afraid of overwatering, that I underwatered my succulents. I had to regrow a lot of my Hoya cuttings as well, now I have a feeling how to water them in different growmedium. greatings from germany :)

Me too!! That's why I started using leca. It seems to be easier to control the moisture level using semi hydro. Definitely watering takes time to master. I'm learning every day 😓

so those stringy roots wont recover at all, not worth it to keep? ):
@ILiekFishiez
@ILiekFishiez 3 года назад
Also! When you cut back the roots like you showed, do the current leaves die?
@amandalaw7131
@amandalaw7131 3 года назад
Yes. All those stringy roots are dead. They won't recover. That's why I cut the plants into smaller sections. If we leave too much foliage on a plant with a small root system, it'll cause the plant too much burden which hinder the recovery process.

@@amandalaw7131 Thank you so much, Amanda!! I was originally going to salvage the roots I could and try to work with it, but in the end decided to propogate a ton and in the end hopefully end up with an even bushier plant (: This video was so great and informative and taught me quite a lot, thanks for making it, I don't really know anyone else on RU-vid that knows/teaches this sort of stuff
