Flatirons Tuning Tech Tip - All about Sway-Bars and how they work
When you start to look at improving your cars suspension, sway-bars are usually one of the first thing that pops up. And for good reason!
But what exactly are they, and how do you pick one bar over another?
Sway-Bars are actually an incredibly handy tool when it comes to dialing in your suspension, and they also have a minimal impact on ride quality, so they are both a great place to start, and a must have if you are building up a track car.
We have put together this video to help answer the questions that we get about exactly what they do, and how to use them to tune your cars suspension.
If you are looking for WRX Sway-Bars we have a lot to choose from:

And the same goes if you are looking for STI Sway-Bars:

Call me stupid but in the off road world, you always hear of drivers disconnecting the sway bar. The Jeep even has electronic sway bar disconnect. Why would it be important to disconnect the sway bar while doing an off road trail, or rock climbing for instance?
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning 4 года назад
Thanks for the question, and it isn't stupid at all. For the sway-bar to do its job, it has to connect the movement of the left and right wheel. This reduced body roll, and can improve handling for sure. But when you go off road, you need those wheels to be able to articulate, and adsorb bumps. If you run sway-bars and you start to go on a trail, it can actually be a rough ride. And at an extreme, you can end up breaking sway-bar links, etc. Sway-bars actually hurts your car's ability to do its job off-road. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

I have a 2006G 35 coupe I just replace the front sway bar bushings and N links were done about 1000 miles ago. My sway bar moves from side to side enough to where the stop or rings stop it from moving any further, is the sway bar supposed to move at all from side to side.?
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning Год назад
Thanks for the question. Some swaybar manufacturers have clips that go on the bars next to the bushings to keep them from moving like that. Check with the manufacturer to see if they offer them, and if they don't Whiteline may make something that would work for you. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!

Hope about for rally and rallyx applications? Sway bars or none? How would one adjust adjustable endlinks for maximum droop?
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning Год назад
For Rally, the majority of cars are either running pretty small sway-bars, or none at all. For Rally-x, I'd say softer sways would be a good option. Maybe stick with stock? And you can also tray disconnecting one endlink on your front or rear bar (or both) and see what that feels like. The nice thing with sway-bars is that you have the ability to adjust them and play with settings a lot. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!

Found this video after I already invested in my suspension. Think I got lucky with my choices though. I went with Whiteline 24mm F&R. Set the front on soft & rear on the middle setting. Running Ohlin's Street & Track coilovers on the Ohlin factory/suggested settings. Also put Whiteline Front Control Arm lower inner rear Anti-Lift Caster bushings on & set for Anti-Lift instead of Anti Dive. Was told Ohlin's DFT would resist anti dive. I had the alignment set at zero tow & -1.3 degrees camber F&R. It is such a huge improvement over my worn-out factory suspension I don't know yet if I need to do any tuning.

Will the sway bar be a negative if there are a lot of potholes, rough highway etc? Also, will this be bad for the vehicle or overall good? Please explain?
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning 5 лет назад
Thanks for your question. Basically, the rougher the surface that you are driving on, the more negative impact a large sway-bar can have. This is why Jeeps/off-road vehicles will disconnect their sway-bars for instance.. If you are driving on the road, pot holes will be a little harsher, but that should be a moderately rare occurrence, so going with a stiffer bar shouldn't be that bad. If you do a lot of driving on dirt, etc., then you may want to keep your sway-bar closer to stock diameter. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

Hello, have you ever seen a front sway bar with bushing type sway links on both ends ( not balljoint type ) affect inner tire wear? Basically what I'm asking is for dramatization purposes if one sway bar link is torqued tighter than the other side will it affect inner tire wear? It seems it would
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning 5 лет назад
Thanks for your question. The short answer is that it shouldn't. The sway bar doesn't apply any steering force to the tire. It is basically just connecting the left and right wheels movement together to a degree. If you are seeing inner edge wear, that would most likely be something to do with alignment, etc. I hope that helps, and Stay Tuned!

Hey guys would a match of 24mm adjustable front and 24mm front adjustable sways be good for a daily and weekend warrior type of car on my GD 07 sti?
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning 6 лет назад
Thanks for your question. It depends on a few things, but a square set-up is a good place to start on a GD. For a street car, a 22mm bar front and rear is usually sufficient, but if you are wanting to really keep the car flat, then you could certainly try the 24mm's. Either way, make sure that you get bars with multiple adjustment holes so you can fine-tune them. Thanks for watching!

Loved the video!!! Quick question: I have a 2004 Nissan Xterra that I am building for off roading, but the rear of the Xterra is not leveled. The drivers rear side sags about 2 inches. It was at 1 and without the sway bar it increased another inch. Do you think something is wrong with my leaf springs or is it really the sway bar doing the 2 in difference? Thank you!!
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning 5 лет назад
Thanks for your question. I'd have to say that a 2" difference from left to right is pretty significant. It does sound like the sway bar was countering some other issue. A good look at the rear suspension sounds like it is in order. And it maybe worth checking the load on both sides to make sure that one side of the truck isn't overloaded. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
@AdrianBugarin
@AdrianBugarin 5 лет назад
FlatironsTuning So your saying it’s pretty normal that there is a two in difference?
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning 5 лет назад
@@AdrianBugarin Yes, but not that much. I'd say the normal diffecence would be something between 1/4" and 1/2" at most. 2" of difference is significant, and since the difference increased when you removed the sway bar, one side of your truck wants to droop apparently.

Thanks for your interesting and informative video. I have a 370Z sport coupe and recently had Hotchkis bars installed on the front and rear. The front bar is very stiff and has only one hole(no adjustability) while the rear bar has three holes, we chose the middle hole. The car is more responsive to steering inputs and turns in very nicely and corners much flatter. The ride quality is somewhat harsher but is acceptable. The front-end dips less when driving over driveways and my chin spoiler isn't scraping the ground as much. Overall, it was a good mod to make for the car.

Hi, I have standard suspension on my car and had to change the bar end link rods. The link rods I replaced the old ones with were about 15mm longer... is this ok? the front suspension now feels stiffer through corners, which is good. Just concerned about any long term effects...?
@CoHuTo
@CoHuTo Год назад
The new rods don't have play and so the sway bar you already have does its job better. It sounds to me that the longer link rods would add a preload to your bar, making it resisting further torsion as well. I'd still ask the professionals though.

Could you please expalin about running no front or no rear sway bar for drag racing purposes? I've read that no front sway bar with transfer weight to the back more to have a better 60ft for drag racing. But ive also heard no rear sway bar, you have more grip straight line but more understeer.
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning 6 лет назад
Thanks for your question. Honestly, I haven't heard this reasoning. It would make sense that you would remove both front and rear for drag racing just to save weight. Remember that sway-bars don't start working until one side is compressed or loaded more than the other. So in a standard launch, a sway-bar would not actually start doing anything. If you lose traction, and the car starts to lean to one side or the other, then the sway-bar would start working, and in that situation a sway-bar may help you keep control of the car. The other example I could think of would be if you have a very high power car that actually twists the chassis when the car launches. In that case, having a rear sway-bar would resist that twist, and may give better traction in the rear. More than anything, I'd say that this would be something that you just need to try out. I'd say start by removing both bars and see how the car feels on a run. If you feel that one axle or the other would benefit from the bar, put that one back on, and see if you have made an improvement. I hope that helps!
@Monstero5o
@Monstero5o 6 лет назад
thank you for the info! I know that rear sway bar helps alot with that torque twist you're talking about. And the front lets the wheels hang longer for longer weight transfer, what ive heard and read, not tested myself. I'll try with the front off first and try both and see how it goes. My car from factory has 600nm at 1900rpm and 380hp at 2200rpm till 6000rpm. So it twists even on stock power. I can only imagine when i tune it to 600hp and 1200nm what itll do....
@tips4truckers252
@tips4truckers252 5 лет назад
Drag cars have only rear bars to compensate for the torque twisting the axle. However they have different kind of sway bars. They work independent of each other. So you can preload your torque side and your other side won't get wheel hop.

@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning 2 года назад
Thanks for your question. If you mean to move the position of the endlink, the purpose is to either make the sway-bar effectively stiffer (by shortening the lever arm the endlink is working on), or to make it effectively softer (by lengthening the lever arm). Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

What impact will I have is I make my own solid end links instead of endlinks that have two ball joints. If you know what I mean
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning 6 лет назад
Thanks for your question. If the endlinks themselves are solid, and able to transfer the force from the control arms to the sway-bar, there will not be much of a change. If there is a fair amount of flex in the endlinks (like some of the older Subaru links that were made of plastic), then you will feel the sway-bar being more responsive with the rigid endlink. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

@rotarolla1
@rotarolla1 2 года назад
As a car turns hard it wants to roll outwards and the inside wheels will want to be lifted, the sway bar does not resist this. It takes the extra spring load created on the outside wheel and uses it to decrease the spring rate on the inside wheel so the inside wheel cant help turn the car over. If your sway bar is hard enough to overcome the spring rate of your springs your ride will become choppy.

What about those lateral locks? Are they really necessary?
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning 5 лет назад
Thanks for your question. On these cars, the rear sway-bar bushing mounts are a little flexy, and those mounts just help to make sure that they twisting force of the bar doesn't start to bend the mounts. It is somewhat rare, but we have seen a couple cases where the sway-bar mounts ended up breaking off when a customer was running a large bar with no brace. Hope that helps, and Stay Tuned!

Am i right in thinking a larger diameter sway bar will resist rotation because they have more rotational inertia with the weight being further from the centre or am i completely wrong in thinking this?
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning 4 года назад
Thanks for your question. Yes, I'd say that you are overthinking this a bit. A larger bar resists the twist or rotation because it is more rigid. For example, a 22mm solid sway bar has about the same torsional rigidity as a 25mm hollow bar. the hollow bar has to be larger to have the same effect because there is so much less material in the bar itself. We actually did a review on them too. Here is that link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X8q65tb1zbY.html Thanks for watching!

thanks for the reply! i was more curious if it will make a big difference with my car or not ?

Depending on how much larger of a bar you go with over stock, it can certainly make a big difference. Ideally you would want a bar that is a bit bigger, and that has adjustable mounting for the endlinks so you can tune the behavior of the sway-bar to get it just where you want it. Good luck!

it prevents your car from rolling over. it pushes one side of the car down when the other is up which helps to keep the wheels touching the ground

@@FlatironsTuning would a coilover sleeve kit with performance struts along with sway bars be a good platform for a road car
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning 6 лет назад
@@SuperJuniorja That is definitely a place to start. I'd say if you just want to reduce body-roll, and gain adjustment of the oversteer/understeer tendencies, just start with sway-bars first. If you want to be able to adjust ride-height, I would go with a full proper coilover before I would go with a sleeve kit, but depending on your platform, there may be some good sleeve kit options. Thanks!

Put a perrin 25mm bar on the back of my 17 wrx and can tell the back end want to come out more in the snow this year vs last year on the stock bar.
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning 6 лет назад
Thanks Malkionx. Yep, they will do that :-) If it is too much you can balance it with a larger front bar. This is where getting adjustable bars is very helpful. If you can get close to where you want to be with bar size, you can then use that fine adjustment of the bars themselves to really dial in your cars handling. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the video. I found it helpful in search of my issue. I recently bought a 2016 mini cooper paceman s All4 and while driving, I hear a lot of metal to metal bangs. I removed both wheels and even the shocks trying to isolate the noise. When i hit on the sway bar with my hand, i can reproduce the noise. The sway bar bushings look good and the links seem new. I'm not sure what's the next step in diagnosing this noise. Should i remove the links and try driving the car to see if it's quite? Thanks for you time and input.
@FlatironsTuning
@FlatironsTuning 4 года назад
That sounds like a good next step. If you disconnect the sway-bars and the noise goes away or is gone completely, then the next step would definitely be to take a good look at all aspects that you mention. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
