I calibrated my maker for the knife blade, then used the cutting blade to cut some 1/16 inch basswood. It recommended 14 passes, so I set it, and left my project. The final results were heart breaking. I had a perfect cut of a shape that went completely through my grip mat. Not deterred, I tried again, and this time I carefully watched my project. For my maker it actually only takes six passes to cut through 1/16 inch basswood. The settings don't allow me to change the passes, so I just make sure to watch the projects carefully.

YES! You have to start checking at about 1/2 way through the cut with any knife blade projects.

Hi ladies. I cut Graphix medium weight chipboard today with my Maker and a brand new knife blade. I chose the Cricut 2.0mm chipboard setting because my chipboard was 2.0mm thick. I ended up cutting completely through my brand new Strong Grip mat on 75% of the cut lines and I now have a few small, thin 1/4" long cuts/cracks in the floor*/base of my Maker machine itself!!! I watched it cut the entire time but my 2 designs were only 3" by 4" so most of the design was under the carriage while it was cutting, therefore making it hard to tell if it did cut through or not. I almost cried when I seen the scratches/cracks!!! I will be using the pause feature regularly from here on out!!! Absolutely devastated. I did cut one Print then Cut on printer paper after with the fine point blade and it cut perfectly, I really hope I didn't damage my Maker. I love it so much!! Thanks for teaching me about the pause/lift technique. 😭😭😭

I cut out the 3-D squirrel with my knife blade on Med weight chipboard, first time. It cut thru and cut up my mat. Thank you for the time and effort you put forth. But now that I have watched your video I learned alittle more about what I can do.
@AngieHolden

With chipboard, start about half way through the cut and stop your machine to check the cut. That will prevent damage to your mat. You can remove the project when it has cut all the way through.

You always do a wonderful job. I really appreciate your efforts, Angie. You might want to experiment with sheet styrene. It's probably the most common material used by diorama and railroad modelers. It comes in many sizes such as .030 in, or .020. . I'm going to have to do some experimenting with it. Your methodology is very helpful to me in this. I enjoy your videos very much even if they're on a subject I'm not directly interested in.

I was researching what machine to get to do the type of crafts that I am doing now and want to do because my current machine, a Cricut Explore One, is older and I know not as versatile as I'm sure the newer ones are. Your presentation was excellent!!! Kudos for that! Very well organized and very informative. I do have one other material I was curious about, mylar for stenciling. When I first started gathering materials I would need, I got some 10mil (Yeah, really thick) because I wanted my stencil to hold up for several uses. All my Cricut would do is to scratch the surface. Being a new user, I didn't know that it is not uncommon to have to do multiple passes to cut all the way through some materials, at least I didn't until now. (THANK YOU!) I figured out it was way too thick so I got some 6mil. It would cut through some, but not all the way even after 2 passes. If you could try this on yours, I would appreciate it.

That was a wonderful video thank you. I’m very new to Cricut and my maker three only came with one blade and I don’t even know what that blade is, but I have cut paper and vinyl and HTV. I found it doesn’t do the dollar tree vinyl at all, it is so wonky, and I’m having a bit of issues with my machine letting go of the mat and Cricut has been no help to me at all. I literally have to pull it out to get the mat out, I forget not using a mat, but that’s another story. thank you for your tips and your hints and I look forward to using a lot of different materials now.

Try this for a blade explanation: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yRFuJJseDRY.html - your machine came with the fine point blade. At the end of the cut, the double arrow button should be flashing. Press that button and the mat should eject from the machine almost completely. Be sure to tell the machine that you are cutting on the mat when you start your cut.

Leather has up to 4 layers to it, from the inside out, a very fibrous flesh side (the hypodermis), then the compact endodermis, next the thin epidermis, and finally the skin side coating. A veg tan will not have a coating, a chrome tan may. Dyes applied during the tanning will go right through, if you hand-dye afterwards, it'll pretty much remain in the epidermis. Often, the hypodermis and much of the endodermis will be split away to become suede, particularly in the thinner leathers you're using. If you have fibrous hypodermis present, you'll be forced to mount it skin side down, as the fibres will let it shift. However, if the inside is firm, yse that against your board, because there's a small possibility a skin side coating may try to delaminate. It'll then produce a good cut anyway.

In reference to the problem of cutting into your mat. If you put green painters tape, sticky side up, on your mat then stuck the material to the tape, would that give you some extra protection for your mat? Maybe a couple of layers, or even duct tape for more cushion and adhesive? What’s your thoughts?
@AngieHolden
@AngieHolden 5 лет назад
I don't think it would really offer much protection as the knife blade can cut right through that in one pass. I would still recommend stopping occasionally and just looking at the cut.
@MICHAELCARACAPPAJR
@MICHAELCARACAPPAJR 5 лет назад
By protection I mean sacrificial material to allow you to completely cut out that pattern on the bottom you were having issues with. I see what you’re saying though. I just bought my wife the maker for Christmas and have been researching as much as I can for different ideas. Thanks for the detailed video and for the response.

Yes I agree detailed information!! 90% of my craft is to recycle cereal, cracker, soda packaging. I do have a question in how does shrink plastic or stencil plastic cut and which blade would be best. Also do you just purchase more mats or clean and reuse old mats?
@AngieHolden

Both shrink and stencil plastic cut great and I usually use the fine point blade for those. You can try to clean your mats but eventually you will need to purchase more.

Angie Holden cane upon your channel when searching google if maker can cut wood loved it so much subscribed .25 into it. Thx for great content. I was on the fence about a maker a silhouette or just going for a laser cutter but know for sure it's a maker. We can't get cricut supplies here but amazon is just a click away

As an electronics hobbyist creating cases for my work can be a real pain, especially as I don't have space for a 3d printer or mini-cnc. I wandered across this video trying to find out if the Circut can cut thin ABS plastic sheet. I see you cut a material that seems to match the description (the "heat-form" material), but you didn't mention the thickness. Ideally I would be cutting 1/16th or thicker ABS.

wow, an abundance of usable info on this video thanks for doing it. Does a Cricut explore have these cutting capabilities on board?

Thanks for this helpful video, but what about acrylic material for the cricut maker, its colour, thickness, blades to use with? I hope you can answer or if you make a video to explain it. Thanks

I'm trying to cut 1/16" Basswood with my Knife Blade, however, it slightly cut into my Strong Grip Mat. Is my mat still usable or does it now need to be replaced?

I have used mats that have been cut into before!

Hi I’m really struggling to cut mount board with the knife blade. I’ve tried Balsa 1/16th (4 passes) with several extra add on passes but its not going all the way through. Anything else is too much and went through my mat 🤦🏼‍♀️ any recommended settings please?

Loved this video! Very informational for me since I just received a Cricut Maker for my birthday in March and I'm very excited to use it to make some decor for my wedding next year! Just wondering if you could tell me the best place to buy the balsa wood? Also if you knew if the basswood that Cricut sells and balsa wood are similar to each other and which would be better to use? Thank you!

The basswood is way stronger and better for most projects. I would use it!

Does anyone have any recommendations for chipboard? Cricut seems to have theirs inconsistently and the projects I've looked up make it sound like the chip board maxes out the height so you can't add anything to it.

I have cut chipboard many times and there are a variety of thicknesses so it depends on what you are making.

How thick was that last new black material you used? My husband has a thin plastic material he wants me to try to cut and I'm wondering if this will work.

the cardboard I tried won't go under the first bar- it's thin, 1 flute standard corrugated cardboard - is there something I need to do to get it to to be accepted? I moved all 4 rings to the right side and only the first 2 inches of mat can be pulled in. The knife blade then started cutting the mat and not the cardboard because it wouldn't go in the machine. Any tips? Does that first bar lift?
@AngieHolden
@AngieHolden 4 года назад
No. If it won't fit under that bar, it is too thick. You will have to find something thinner.

@@AngieHolden ok thanks - I thought I had the thinnest piece of cardboard
