Yesterday I had my first cane mobility training. I live in an old city and we have cobblestone and brick sidewalks. The instructor had a variety of cane tips and the best cane tip became readily evident. Pencil tip, marshmallow tip, rolling marshmallow tip, glide tip, ceramic tip were not meant for brick or cobblestone. The 2" roller ball tip was the perfect all-terrain tip for me. Never would have chosen it, it simply was too obvious to ignore. Best part is I can look up from the ground when walking and not stare at the ground with my low vision looking for hazards. That is fantastic alone.

Can you please tell me where I can get the metal glide tip for my cane? It looks like the one on MaxiAids only works with a .5 inch and not blind cane. The image you put up in this video also looks like the tip is wider than the sleeve, and I have yet to find anything else that matches it. Please help.

I got mine from NFB (National Federation of the Blind). I would try there or Ambutech.

Anyone know where I can purchase a light weight carbon fiber collapsible white cane with a metal glide tip I purchased a cane from maxiaids sometime back but it’s a heavy collapsible cane with a long white round tip and it hurts my wrist with long distance walks
@theblindlife
@theblindlife 2 года назад
Two options, check the NFB store. That’s the type of canes that they sell and you can get either a long straight cane or a folding cane. I bought a seven segment folding cane with a metal glide tip from them and I love it, one of my favorite canes. The other option is to Google Chris Parks canes. He’s the one that makes those lightweight cans with the metal tips.

I regularly use a metal tip cane when not using my dog guide, I find it best for two point touch. I like the way it makes noise, I can tell when I am walking past hallways without having to touch the wall constantly.

Wow, I never knew there are so many options.. I am a long distance walker - around 2 hours daily. And the marshmallow tip - wears out. I go through 1 tip per month+. Just ordered the Omni tip- I have high hopes 🤞🏼🤞🏼

My favorite tip which I haven’t seen you cover yet is a disc shaped tip which I believe is called a jumbo roller it’s just shaped like a flat disc and I use that on my cane. It is made out of a similar material as the ball. And I started using it a couple years ago and I have never looked back.

My favorite was the ball, but I changed the type of cane I use, and it only allows for the metal tip. 🦯

Hello Sam. Thank you for the video. Here in France we don’t have so much choices. I am using a small rolling ball attached to a spring. The spring helps to reduces vibrations and the ball I good to go over cracks. I know a lot of people who purchased this spring tip but it seems you don’t have it in USA so I wanted to share it with you 🙂 In France, as long as I know, there is only one organization who is employing impaired people to make the canes. We don’t have innovations like Ambutech canes. It’s hard to find the tips you present or carbon fiber canes…

Very interesting video! I tried the pencil tip, the metal tip, the fix marshmallow tip and I'm hopeless with those🤣🤣 I like my marchmallow willing tip or the tennis ball one! I live in the suburbs of Paris lots of concrete, stones, grass etc... I couldn't change now! I don't use my cane as identification so tips that don't roll are a real pain!😊👋

Hello Sam, thank you su much for the review. I used the roller ball tip. Had a lot of trouble with my elbow and shoulder. When I saw the Omni Sense tip I did order it with good hope. It's the best tip ever. Yes, it is a little bit heavier. But The best tip ever! I walk better, it takes less of my energy. So happy and for me really worth the cost. The only thing i didn't try (because it isn;t in my neighbor hood) is walking on sand. Thanks again Sam. I hope more people in the netherlands will try the omni sense tip.

I was using the roller ball. It was hanging up on the broken sidewalks. I switched to the wheel tip. It's more for broken concrete and wide gaps. It works well on off road areas. It does give much feed back.

Hi Sam have you tried the jumbo roller? It is shaped like a hockey puck and rolls on the edge. I find it better when walking trails in the woods and on grass than the rollerball. Also for walking on grass and the beach I like the Dakota Disc it does look as though you are minesweeping though. I’ll add a link to my video of me using my 3 tips (rollerball, jumbo roller, and Dakota disc) as a reply to this comment.

I have quite a collection of tips, but prefer my jumbo roller, as it glides over obstacles as well as, or better than the jumbo ball tip, but with slightly less weight. I also recently got a ceramic tip, just to see what it's like, and it's tiny! Probably small than the marshmallow tip, which means it gets stuck in everything! I'm eagerly awaiting the OmniSense shipping to the UK!

Thanks Sam.. I got the OrCam READ.. I love it.. it has some trouble with low light, too much light on low contrast font, or columns that run next to each other.. LOL.. But for contracts, it is great.. You just have to take the document in a place where you can avoid talking or noise.. I'm at a stage where i need what i think you called the guide cane. I still see the place i want to get.. but the close up stuff like curbs, cut outs , stairs are very difficult because i've lost my depth perception.. I avoid stairs like the plague.. (are we allowed to use that word in this political climate? LOL) How do they measure a person for a guide cane? is it from the ground to where the wrist bends..? I think that is how a walking cane is measured then round up. I don't need support like a walking cane I tripped the other day on what i thought was a cut out.. It was a curb and i went to the ground with my groceries..

Metal glide Tip is miss named. It doesn’t glide and proponents don’t expect it to glide. This is strictly a two point touch tip. proponents like the sound feedback and a little of the tactile feedback but proponents of this tip will probably think that a roller tip gives them too much information.

Hi Sam, I'm always excited to learn more about the white cane. :) My go-to was recommended to me by the o and m specialist after I let them know I live in a rural area and don't always have sidewalks to walk on. It's a fiarly heavy white resin disc, maybe an inch and a half to two inches diiameter that mounts sideways on my cane tip in comparison to the rolling tip that looks like a little tire you mention at the end of your video. So it rolls, but only side to side. I have used it on uneven firmer ground like an ireggular grassy area with no issues, but in looser substrate like the gravel on the side of a road, it slops around quite a bit. It handles grooves in concrete sidewalks all right so long as I'm using good technique, but I've also had it get ccaught in the grooves if I'm not paying enough attention. Keep in mind, I'm a very new cane user so there's the potential for user error being a bigger problem than the can tip itself. Because the tip is mountd sideways on the end, that means my cane doesn't fold down very flat, and doesn't fit in a cane holder I modified from a belt clip cell phone holder. Because it's resin, there's a lot of vibration that gets transmitted up to my hand. I walked two miles with it along the local pavement, and my hand felt the vibration for hours afterwards.

What I need to know is what brand of cane and brand of tips are interchangeable. I need a new cane and want to get a brand with lots of tip options. Right now, ny folding cane has a pencil tip and can not be changed. Are some brands of canes better than others? Are some brands of tips better than others? When I was a kid in the early 70s, we had one choice, a solid cane with metal tip. Now there are so may options, it is overwhelming. There really needs to be a serious discussion on cane brands, as aposed to cany types.

There’s a type of cane that is specifically used for identification. It tends to be smaller and more thin than the canes used for navigation. They are often just called ID canes. Can you give the website door the Omni sense tip?

Thank you for the video, which tip would you recommend for walking on the beach?

Actually, I just recorded some footage for an upcoming video where I test out the different tips on the beach. At the risk of spoiling the video, the Dakota disc was the winner. Best tip to use on the beach.

I’m not totally blind but I am legally blind. I don’t have any central vision. By the way, I loved watching your movies back in the 80s! Up in smoke is hilarious!

Hi! Do you know what kind of polymer are used to make the tips?? I saw somewhere that they're made of graphite, is that true?
@theblindlife

Some certain tips are made out of graphite. Most are some type of plastic, although I’m not sure what type. Some tips are even made out of ceramic and metal.

This is great information! What kind of canes do these tips fit on? I use a graphite revolution with a marshmallow roller but not all tips are compatible with certain tips. I’m curious about the Omni tip because I walk a lot over various terrain.

I’m not sure if there are certain canes that these tips are compatible with. All I know is that they come in hook and slip on styles.

Your daily driver omni tip seems to be the culmination of all of the other ones , an awesome innovation. Thanks for sharing 👍

Yes, it’s pretty cool. However, it’s not perfect so if you are considering it, I definitely recommend watching my other videos on it.

Sam, how does the Omni sense go with moving up and down stairs? Can you use it the same way as a marshmallow?
@theblindlife

Pretty much, although it’s a heavier tip so it’s not exactly the same.

Hi everyone, I am relatively new to this gentleman‘s channel. I stumbled across it a couple of days ago. And, some interesting cane tips. Something I’ve never heard of. Right now, I’m primarily a guide dog user but, i use the cane when I need to. And I am primarily a metal cane tip user. I also, appreciate the tips that he gave while traveling in Europe. The cobblestones, I would have not thought about destroying arcane tips. Here in America, we usually have good sidewalk pavement. Not the old cobblestones.

I see this is a couple of years old, but I'll share the comment I wrote before noticing the date. I'm a guide dog user so I don't use canes a lot. I have arthritis in my hands and some shoulder problems that don't conflict with how I hold a guide dog handle but are just so uncomfortable and tiring when using a cane. But I also don't like constant contact and really can't use the rolling ball tips. I feel like constant contact is constant jarring discomfort travelling up the cane. So, that said, I found my ideal cane tip and it's not one you've mentioned. I have no idea how widely it's available but I got my last cane from Ambutech, honestly, because I loved the idea of all their color options. It's called a Flex tip and is described on the Ambutech site as "A bell shaped tip with a flexible neck designed to bounce over uneven surfaces, made from an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene that lasts 2 or 3 times longer than a regular tip. This 1.75” / 4.5 cm sized tip is used with the two-point touch technique. so, I love this tip so much I could do commercials for it. Yes, I'm tapping it but the flexible neck acts like a shock absorber, so the feedback from it is great but gentle, super light. It works on any surface I've tried, and *never* gets stuck, but I do mostly use it on concrete or asphalt sidewalks and paths, sometimes dirt, in New York City, but have used it on much rougher surfaces also. I didn't even remember reading that part of the description about how long it can last. I was starting to think I should buy an extra tip as even though I don't use it a lot, it would suck to need it and have the tip break down. I should anyway. I only got the one because it was an experiment. But you should let people know about it. I can't imagine anyone not loving it, who taps their cane instead of rolling it I even bet it would win over some who use a rolling ball. I even look forward to trying it out in places I hope to someday visit, that have cobblestones.
