This is a demonstration on how to get water from your well using a bailer bucket. If you have a top discharge setup this is going to be impossible unless you remove your pump first. If you have a Pitless Adapter setup then just remove your cap, drop the bucket and you will have water! This works great in bored wells, shallow wells, spring boxes etc. Sometimes it is a great thing to have one if you need to prime a pitcher pump.

And here I was thinking of spending my hard earned dough on a secondary hand pump. This may be crude but will definitely work in a pinch. Thanks for sharing!

I've made a bailer bucket but had resigned myself to just hauling it up and down by hand. Never even thought of using a cord reel --- that's genius. Thanks for posting your video!

Something I am contemplating doing. To make it easier in handling the bucket, I would make a Bushcraft tripod over the well, then anchor the rope reel. There are types one-way valves, where you can break the seal when it's full, and then drain it from the bottom. Thus, let the bucket down via the tripod and fill up, then pull it up straight out of the well on the tripod, then put a bucket under it and drain it into the bucket.

Another important aspect of the rope winch is that it keeps the rope clean an limits the amount of contamination that can be introduced into the borehole. Thanks for the idea.

Yes, it is very good to learn how things are done from far away places. I studied to be an Electrical Engineering in college. I am sure there are many things done in similar ways in both the US and where you are. What works is just what works no matter the location.

I've had a bailed bucket standing by for about a year. My one way valve is holes drilled thru the PVC cap a dollar store sink stopper bolt and nut. I have several inactive wells around ready to be gutted if need be. Much better than investing big bucks in a manual pump system that could break or be stolen. The bailed goes back home with you.

I've got the parts to do one of the simple bailers that just uses a piece of cut SilMat like the cooks use now days for baking their cookies on, or a cut, flat type drain stopper for the foot valve. I'm looking into getting a couple of the commercial ones, and building a couple more for redundency. I really loved your idea for the reel, because it would make retreival so much quicker and easier. Thanks for the great idea.

Years ago they were commercially produced from tin to fit inside 4'' casing. The "Well Pail'' , tug of the rope after submerged set in motion the mechanics that closed the bottom. Extremely lightweight and bulletproof

I don't mind. I have spent a lot of time there while I was a child. My father was a plumber and worked at supply shop (plumbing). My brother is a central heating (different than that in US), and I work as electronic tehnician at open pit coal mine. I am watching this chanell to see nice ways to do stuff at distant places, maybe help by advice or idea. 1000 ideas, 1 good, 1000 good ideas, 1 workable... keep it going. Best Regards.

We had something similar made from the wood in the village of my parents when i was a kid. The difference is that the one we used had a spike at the bottom and was releasing water when put down in bucket. I know now that that well was around 150mm dia, and water was starting at 8 meters. Interestingly, that well was result from some geological probing and was one of a kind in the area where wells where all dug out by hand. Best Regards.

Our well is 365 feet deep... About every 4 or 5 years we had to pull the pump with 300 or more feet of line.. I saw comments about needing a crane... We just used a tractor and even used an ATV one time

My well has a pitless adaptor. It looks to me like I'd still have to pull out the pump, drop pipe & electrical cable to make enough room for the bailer. Even worse, at some point I'll have to get the stinking male adaptor fitting to slide back down into slots and seal, it's always such a great challenge to get those brass fittings to mate while I'm guiding them together at the end of a 5 foot pipe inside the well casing while holding a flashlight. I think I'll stick with putting a poly pipe with a check valve down the well and then jerk it up and down (like you-know-what) so I can get the water to flow.

Rural part of Serbia, edge of willage Krnjevo between Smederevska Palanka and Velika plana. There was a normal well too. There was my late mother home. We are talking about 30 - 35 years ago. The big well was still there three years ago, and the smaller was destroyed about 15 years ago together with barn.

Great idea. I would like to see the bailer redesigned to prevent having to turn the bailer over to empty the water. The idea would be to allow water to come in, seal when full like the foot valve and allow the user to break the seal by just placing the bottom of the bailer on something. A PVC reducer, something shaped like a plunger for the seal and the wooden part of the plunder would extend past the bottom of the reducer. This would be used with something like a windless to draw the bailer up high enough for this to work. Of course, this is just a description of a rough design. Another idea could involve hinging the bailer a little up from the middle with the addition of something to stabilize the top. This latter idea could be used in partnership with a windless. It would operate similarly to the bucket system of old style draw wells by just tipping the bailer.

Interesting concept but my well is 170 ft deep and the submersible pump is really heavy to haul out. Our old dug well, 80 ft deep, dried out. Any suggestions for deep wells?

Good one. Must be awesome to have your own well. In a lot of cases it would be very difficult to get all the hardware out of the way, especially if the water table is a long way down. You'd need something like a crane to get it out (I imagine).

Is the water at the static level (top of the water) safe to drink? I’m asking because a well pump goes down a lot deeper. Thanks in advance!

Myself I would use some stainless aircraft cable so that device is maintenance proof when you need it the most the rope wouldn't be rotten.

A simplification is to weight the bucket so that it sinks below water level and fills and empties from the top.

I have a 5000 gal concrete cystern that takes the water off my alsphalt shingled roof. It is old 1919 and has a lot of decomposed debris on the bottom. I can get into the cystern to clean if needed. How important is it to keep the water airated? How important is it to bleach or filter the water? I live near a busy airport. Thank you for your time and your videos.

Very good ! Thumbs up on this one ! I haven't taken my well cap off but I'm sure there's a pipe hanging on the side of the well casing so it would be hard to get this past the pipe ,but in a major disaster scenario I could pull the pipe out I guess. Thanks for the info !

Thanks for the video, Our local governing county forced me to seal my well up to be able to apply for a permit to build a new house and septic system. I doubt that I would legally be able to have a well on my own property since we are hooked to a rural water system. I might have to break the law and drill my own well and hide it to keep it a secret. I am afraid that a centralized rural water system would be the first target of a shtf fan situation.

It is 225 to 250 feet to static water level, thought of building or getting a hand pump for backup.. From what I have seen and been told that's to deep.. So I have a deep hole in the ground, may have to do something like this... Any suggestions?
