E Mail from Fosi to me . (good news) Dear Peb, You are great! We are now developing a mono block based on V3, our ID engineer has extensive experience and creative vision, and we are excited to add more features to enhance the product, such as a bar LED. Your valuable ideas and input have greatly contributed to our ongoing innovation. We are grateful for your thoughts and suggestion. Thank you once again for your trust and support.
Clearly Fosi audio reads the comments because that was the #1 request in the V3 video. It’d be cool if it had a balanced input so you could use a pro preamp, but I guess for an 80$ device that’s probably not gonna happen.
They are apparently also working on a headphone amp with a similar design to the V3 (found this on ASR forums when researching the v3 a bit further, there's even a kickstarter made for it with some pictures (/renders?).
If you listen to vinyl, there is another very good use for the high-pass filter on that amp. You can turn it on and set it for say, 30Hz, and it will reduce the record warp frequencies (3-4Hz) and the tonearm resonance frequencies (6-10Hz). This will save a LOT of the amplifier's power when playing back vinyl, and will also reduce distortion caused by your woofers being driven out of their linear excursion range by these infrasonic signals.
@@chinmeysway I did say infrasonic, which means too low to hear. Yes, I'm sure. Record warps often produce infrasonic energy around 3 or 4 Hertz, while the tonearm resonance of most turntables happens at 6-10 Hertz, and this resonance can also be excited by record warps or even by normal transients in the music. The high-pass filter, set to 30Hz or so, will reduce the amplitude of these infrasonic signals, sparing the amp and speakers from trying to reproduce them.
The V3 is the one...... I use a wiim pro to a schiit modi and loki, no way I ever thought I'd say this, but I put up my expensive amps for awhile as this setup kicks ass
@@john26262 high pass filters block low frequencies, they are used to prevent low frequencies from passing to the MAIN speakers. That way you can protect your speakers and that way they can handle more power...
A high pass filter is definitely sorely needed in many of these little amps. It would be amazing if there was a subwoofer output with the corresponding low-pass filter as well. This would allow the amp to function as a true crossover. So I haven't seen any amps provide a true crossover and people would need to buy something like a miniDSP if they wanted bass management in the form of a crossover. I noticed that Rogers Sound Labs offers a miniamp with a 90Hz HPF too (RSL IA255.1) and their new 12" sub (RSL Speedwoofer 12S) also has a variable HPF built-in, which will filter the Line-In. Very nice for manufacturers to start offering better bass management options for people trying to set up simple 2.1 systems
That one Little Bear Amp and Speaker switcher is an awesome device. I have one and I use it all the time. My use for it is to switch between a tube amp and a SS amp that can drive either my speakers or my headphones via a banana plug to 4pin XLR adapter(I made mine but there are tons available online). Driving headphones off of the speaker taps is a game changer especially for hard to drive planars. For best results use a source with adjustable gain. I use the Geshelli J2 and it's three levels of gain work well when switching from HP to speakers.
Thanks Randy. It would be good to see you review both the Dayton Audio HTA 100 and the Nobsound B100. They look like fun and very affordable little amps.
a lot of people are upset with the crosstalk issue with the 3.5mm out and the RCA in is it is not a true line out but just a passive connection, so basically a Y-splitter. Pretty unfortunate but I am glad I went with Schiit instead of the V3...
Feature set wise this is outstanding for the price.. unfortunately it seems the power & sound quality is on par or less for the price. I don't own or have a need for these ultra budget amps but i certainly applaud any manufacturer that adds these types of features at this or any price point. Always nice to have options. Having preouts on an amplifier is good stuff, adding a crossover is even cooler.
The Real Thing is probably the album ive listened to the most in my life. It came out in grade 7 when i was falling in love with music. One of the first solos i learned was war pigs. Haha. Underwater Love and athe Morning After are probably my favorite songs off the album.
Great job, Randy. You're kinda like a fine wine...I mean, I drink bourbon so I'm not sure if I've got it quite right or not but keep it up, man. Rock on!
Just a guess here, but this appears to run the MA12070 IC by Infineon (how it is heatsinked) which is the same chip used by the Rogersound Labs amp. Obviously bigger and heavier because of the internal power supply.
Regarding the matching DTA-100LF Subwoofer Amplifier .......Can you recommend a sub (10" / 12" etc) for this? (Maybe a part number from parts express?) Much appreciated. I await your response. Great review.
I hope Fosi sees this and makes a high power version like the v3. It's very hard to find anything near this price range and size with a high pass filter.
Hi Randy. Love your channel. Can you please review the Dayton audio dta 200 hybrid tube amp it's kinda new and I want to know what you think about it thanks
Will you be comparing the V3 to the RSL IA 255 ? By the way, I love your videos, you’re definitely among the top 5 out there!!! Keep doing what you’re doing bud, we all love it!
probably not. since the RSL has tone controls I like to compare things that are like for like. or at least as close as I can get them. I think the bt20a pro and the RSL comparison is probably coming though
I love your channel and I would like your opinion on a low cost (less than $300) for a studio apartment sound system with bluetooth, bookshelf speakers and a subwoofer and here is what I have on my Amazon list. The Dayton Audio DTA-2.1BT2 amplifier ($85), the Audio Express Koe’ B102 speakers ($70 pair) and then finally the Acoustic Audio PSW-6 subwoofer ($100) for a total of $255. What would you suggest for the same price range and thanks!
If you’re in the US I’d go Fosi tb10d (sometimes $60, Wiim mini $80, and then your speakers and sub. Although the Fosi doesn’t have a sub out. But if your sub has speaker level Inputs you could still make it work
With that silver volume knob it looks alot like my little Keces E40. My E40 has a phono mm stage, a pre out and two inputs. While I like the subout with variable frequency, the Keces E40 can drive a 4 ohm load and at fairly high levels before distorting. You reach noticeable distortion first with transient peaks which require lots of power bursts before it outright distorts completely. That's a level I do not typically listen too and I only experienced that on Dali Menuet SE's which drop well under 4 ohms and are rated at 83dB. That was about the 3 o'clock position on the volume knob. On my Dali Opticon 1s which do not drop below 4 ohms, I never had an issue. With 6-8 ohm speakers, and if at least 86 dB efficient, I don't think there would be any issue well above 90 dB, even at 6-8 feet away from the speakers in a moderate sized room . I like the small form factor and not many small amps provide both the power and SQ to be considered by audiophiles. The Keces E40 while limited to SPLs and requires reasonable match-ups with equipment trounces the inexpensive class D equipment IMO, although I still like the class D stuff on certain speakers. The issue is essentially price for that performance as it now costs $750 US. Although less than a Rega Brio and also an amp I prefer over the Brio, the inexpensive class D amps still provide excellent performance for their price. If price is an issue, put your money in the speakers you want and work your way up in amps, dac, etc., starting with more budget equipment. While not inexpensive, the Keces is capable of driving alot of speakers very well musically which cost as much as 3X its cost or more as long as it isn't a super difficult load to drive...IMO. If Dayton could up the power and quality of its amp/pre section, it could be a really good solution even if it would cost a bit more to do so. If you want a quality class AB amp in a small form factor and can use an external dac as well as a tt and can afford it, consider the Keces E40.
Were you using Bluetooth with the WIIM with Intergalactic, were you using Bluetooth? If so, the distortion could have been some digital mistracking? maybe try it one more time with a line-in vice the bluetootn.
Nice detail! - I always thought it is kind of silly not to use a high-pass filter when adding a sub - takes a bit of the stress from the amp and speakers while, at least theoretically, making it easier to blend the subwoofer in. However - It still leaves many of us with a dilemma since it does NOT feature an option to activate a mixed channel low-pass filter for those subs that are designed to use a standard subwoofer output. Currently I have repurposed an old Mackie HR824 I found used (just one, so the other channel was likely broken) and this feature would sadly not be useful to me. That said, I absolutely see the use of this.
Question : Are you able to recommend an amp , cd player and bookshelve speakers under $ 700 total for listening to George Strait, Led Zeppelin and B.B. King ? Thank you sir for your expertise and most informative channel. ~~~~ from the Philippines.
Would it perform and sound better used as a stereo full range preamp...connected to a class D power amp? It is still a nice build preamp with extra bluetooth and standby mode feature, nowadays finding a simple active preamp is getting harder to find... Would be a good comparison in a future video...maybe next to SCHIIT MAGNI+ / NITSCH MAGNI PIETY or JDS LABS ATOM AMP + HEVI Most affordable, down to earth audio channel ever with the best intertainment reviews!!! Thanks Randy! Cheers!!! ☕
I could really use some help in setting up a proper hifi system. I know this question is asked a whole lot and let me know if there is a more appriorate place to ask it. I've been trying to figure it out myself, but I keep running into problems with components of my already existing system that may not work with products like the ones mentioned in this video. The two sources I am trying to hook into the system are a 90s-2000s Sony CD player with just a straight RCA out and an Audio-Technica AT-LPW30TK (this unit has a built-in preamp, but I'm not sure how great it is and if it would be worth upgrading to something like the project phono-box S2). I would also like to be able to do Bluetooth for digital streaming. Initially I ran these two sources into an older Yamaha receiver, the receiver out to a Polk PSW10 sub, and then using the speaker level outputs of the sub out to to a pair of JVC passive speakers I received from a neighbor (these were to replace the Edifier R1280T powered speakers I was using before with the turntable and CD player when I didn't have a subwoofer). My CD player works great with the setup. I'll be it the audio is darker than I would prefer, but it's loud and the bottom frequencies are very articulate. However, when I tried using my turntable it began to distort either immediately or halfway through a side of the record. I'm fairly confident it's the receiver, but I could be wrong. What should I do to improve this setup while keeping my subwoofer? Do I need another, better receiver or could I use an integrated amplifier such as the ones mentioned in this video? What speakers would work best with said amplifier? I am so lost and just want to be able to listen to my records again. I have at max $500 I can spend on a new setup, but the cheaper the better lol. Any help in the right direction would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
tuff loads. tuff luv. come on dayton ppl, give this baby way more watt juice, better highs, better the BT issue, better looking knob and i’td be like the best mini amp!! compete w fosi and aiyeemuh!!! u got this
Topping’s updated their PA5 to PA5 II amplifier. A review would be appreciated. Hopefully won’t have an over zippy treble. $250. bucks US isn’t unaffordable if it’s listenable. From Apos.
Another great review as usual. So many low-priced products are available for nearfield 2 channel listening, which is really encouraging for new to the hobby audiophiles. Thank you as always for your time, effort, and honest review. Stay well, Sir.
I've tried a lot of cheap micro digital amps, including Fosi Audio, Suca Audio, Fx Audio, BRZHIFI, and SMSL. Unfortunately, I've been disappointed with the sound quality. Some of the amps seem to have a weird range of frequencies, and the soundstage doesn't meet my taste. I'm going to be going back to real hi-fi equipment. I'm willing to spend more money to get the sound quality I'm looking for.
An amp without high pass to speakers AND low pass to preamp RCAs is a deal breaker now that I've had it with my BasX. I highly doubt the Fosi sounds better than the A07. At best, it might sound as good.
I have both, in my opinion the V3 does sound slightly better. Mostly on the bass end to be honest, it's tighter. My A07 bass sounds a bit muddier compared to the V3. That being said, the a07 is still good value for money. (I'm comparing the a07 with the stock 32 or 36v (can't remember sorry) vs the V3 with 48v btw, so may not be totally fair, idk).
@@danielh12345I'm glad you mentioned the different power supply because that is the exact improvement that a bigger power supply would make. I need to get one for mine.
@gregmatula9749 I'm not sure how it works, but my A07 barely if ever went past the 12 o'clock position for reference so I assume it still had plenty of juice to give? Also, just so you're not dissapointed in the thing, it's a noticeable difference for me, but the a07 already sounds great to my ears
@@danielh12345 I used the a07 for a few months then I got a 2 channel BasX on sale for $300 and haven't used the a07 since. I also picked up a Marantz SR7500 for $100. I'd never use a Fosi anyway.
@@carlsitler9071 thats fair, they sound like nice units. I like the formfactor of these amps, my HiFi gear is all on / around my (work from home) desk in my studio apartment so its nice to save some space / cash haha.
I have a fosi v3 saw your video. Looking for an amp with a 12v trigger input to connect to my main amp a denon avr x3800h to power the main left and right speakers. Can you help please?
I don't see the point of a high-pass filter on an amp, when almost all subwoofer models include a low-pass filter, other than to make subwoofer tuning easier. Especially if you're going to pay more for an amp that isn't as good, in the end, as a Fosi V3.
Nope, still recommend the highly underrated BRZHIFI 3255XLR with opa1622 and decoupling boards! Wipes the floor with more or less all of the 3255 chips amps so far…think Monster truck over Tonka toy!
fosi sells a 48 volt 5 amp that seems to be of good quality. I'm not sure if it's on amazon or not but I'm sure it could be purchased directly from them
Can you get a standalone high pass filter that sits between the amp and the passive speakers if your amp doesn't have one built in? I have a nice sub and want to filter some bass from the speakers. Been searching and haven't seen anything for this application.
With similar features which one do you prefer? The Dayton Audio DTA-100ST or the RSL ia 255.1? I'm leaning toward the RSL because of the USB input but I don't like the 3.5mm sub/pre output.
the RSL had more juice so I'd probably go with that one. Also the tone controls were very useful. But the highness filter is fixed. there are benefits to both. depends on your use case.
Parts express told me it was an industry standard to call their 3" speaker a 4" speaker. Their choice to distort reality, I now take any of their products with a huge grain of salt...
I go by what their website says emotiva.com/products/airmotiv-b2-pair-bookshelf-loudspeakers I don't think I've ever looked into the manual to check it. It may be a typo. The B1+ are 8 ohm impedance I think
you can doing the old school "bass blocker" method of putting a cap inline with the positive lead but that still is sending a full strength signal to the speakers. Mini dsp is also an option but that can be costly and difficult to set up. Actually a use case scenario for this product is just use it as a high pass filter" by running source into this and then this into another amp
its bad that most amps don't have a high pass miss it on the fosi-audio bt30pro but also many aktive subwoofer dont have a highpass filter only variable lowpass
I have to agree that a high pass on a modest system can improve it quite a bit, even without a sub! It is often better to just get by with the 2nd harmonic of the actual bass line and have the rest of the signal clean than to suffer clipping or tons of IM distortion from low frequencies that the system just can not reproduce anyway. Yes you will miss the lowest notes, but you were not going to hear them over such a system anyway! I had to go listen to intergalactic, but I still prefer Animusic's Gyrodrums for showing off bass. That said I have heard some systems where the IM distortion would have completely wrecked the vocals in intergalactic, so it is a good test song.
@D1N02 I know right? I only live about a 45 minute drive from Dayton. So I could either drive or have my stuff shipped really cheap or even for free!! I got all of my stereo equipment from Parts Express! (Dayton Audio)
The V3 is crap. It may use slightly higher quality components than other amps in this price range but the sound is awful and the power is nowhere near what it is claimed to be. For example, it has nothing like the power of my Quad 303 which is only rated at 2x30 Watts. The bass is really lacking compared to the quad and the clarity of the Fosi is terrible compared. My Quad was made in 1968 and cost me less than the V3.
