It’s time for this mans complete biography to be made into a full length feature film. The sound track alone would be wonderful…..Please make this happen!

Having stumbled across Bullard's story (at last), I was ranting away on social media asking "Why why why isn't there a major Hollywood blockbuster movie about this man's unbelievable astonishing heroic courageous tragic life???" And then found your brilliant short film, as if in answer. OK sure 9 minutes is never gonna be enough -- but would 3 hours be "enough" for such a life either? In gratitude.

Hi Scott, thanks a lot! We're really grateful that we could support the telling of Bullard's story. The praise belongs to director Paul Mignot, cinematographer Eric Dumont and their team though for managing to tell a life like Bullard's in not even nine minutes. Best, your ZEISS Cinematography team

Spectacular! One of the best short films I've seen in a long time. It took an incredibly talented crew and cast I'm sure. It also shows off the Zeiss Supreme Prime Radiance lenses very well - they felt very appropriate to the project. Well done to all involved - you should be proud of the result.

Bullard flew in l'Aeronautique Militaire -- the French air service in WW1. The motto on his plane read 'Tout le sang coule rouge' -- French for 'All blood runs red.' I believe he was made a Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur at the hand of Charles de Gaulle, not for his service in WW1 but for his service with the French resistance in WW2. He led a remarkable life. . FWIW he flew only 20 combat sorties. A non-com, he got into an altercation with a French officer. The officer had Bullard struck from the flying list. Bullard went back to his old unit, the 170eme Regiment d'Infanterie. (I don't know how that worked out. When Bullard left hospital in October 1916, he was invalided from front line service.) The members of the 170eme RI were known as the 'Swallows of Death' and, as one may expect, Bullard was known as the 'Black Swallow of Death'. But to be clear, that appellation came from his infantry unit, not from his flying exploits. . In 20 combat flights, Bullard claimed two kills. Neither was confirmed. . Bullard's service in l'Aeronautique Militaire is something of a mystery. He reported to N93 in August 1917 but transferred to N85 in September 1917. A transfer after less than a month with a unit seems strange. Despite the 'N' for Nieuport, both squadrons were transitioning to the SPAD VII. I do not believe Bullard ever flew a Nieuport in combat. He was struck from the flying list in November 1917. . Oh, yeah. Bullard was promoted posthumously to Second Lieutenant, United States Air Force, in 1995.

I had the pleasure of seeing this film last night at a SMPTE meeting near Boston. Richard Schleuning, Senior Director of Zeiss, screened a number of examples of films made with the new Supreme Prime and Supreme Prime Radiance lenses. Paul Mignot’s film about Bullard is fantastic and a true work of cinematic art. Blocking, mise-en-scene, costumes, lighting, lensing, directing, casting, acting and editing (!) are all first rate and a tour-de-force of impressionistic narrative filmmaking. I first heard of Bullard when I was a boy, captivated by stories and films about France’s famed WWI fighter pilot squad, the Lafayette Escadrille. Later, Tony Bill’s 2006 film “Flyboys” briefly featured a fictionalized version of Bullard. But Mignot’s inspirational 9-minute film goes into much more detail about Bullard’s origin story - which is amazing in and of itself. Thank you, Zeiss, for supporting this gorgeous, thoughtful project and kudos to the filmmaking team for choosing this story and knocking it out of the park. I hope some efforts will be made to distribute this film widely, but especially to school libraries in America, France, and everywhere else. Full disclosure: I’m developing a TV series about unsung heroes and heroines of color worldwide, and had already decided exclusively to use Zeiss cine lenses for that project, reasoning that I could find AC’s anywhere I go who would know CP.2’s like the back of their hand.

Don't add black bars on top and bottom of the image, on ultrawide monitors the 2.35:1 aspect ratio should be full screen, and it's not, because the editing is wrong...I see a tiny video on my screen with black bars in all sides...top, bottom, left and right...stop doing that...the screen adapt itself with the right aspect ratio...
