it is said that Kirin (mythological creature) is a giraffe that was imported to Japan. Since they never saw a giraffe before, they thought it was a horse with a dragon's characteristics such as horns, long neck, and spotted patern. Hence why Kirin is depicted as a giraffe in this series.

I know, but it was actually first imported to China, hence the name Qilin for giraffes. Japan is the second to adopt the name Qilin/Kirin for giraffes. The third one is Korea. However, Chinese language changed giraffe's name from Qilin to Changjinglu (long-necked deer), leaving only Japan and Korea as two East Asian countries to still call giraffes as Qilin
