When the Aztecs conquered new lands they were almost like independent city states under aztec rule, but the new lands were subject to brutal taxation of food, soldiers, slaves and most importantly people for human sacrifice . Many of the city states wanted rid of the aztecs and many allied with the Spanish to defeat them. The Spanish army was mostly made up of indigenous tribes that were against the aztecs. If the Spanish didn’t arrive when they did, it could’ve been possible the Aztec empire would’ve collapsed anyway.
