I loved growing up with these shows from the 70’s. My cousin had the biggest crush on Leif Garrett, she had posters of him all over her room. We never missed a copy of Tiger Beat magazine. We didn’t need social media or cell phones, and life was a lot easier, and more laid back in those days. So many of us experienced what Buddy did in this episode. Good for Buddy sticking to her values and not giving in.
What a trip, down memory lane. The shows, the fashion, the times, I really miss 'em all. Merideth Baxter Quinn Cummings, Leif Garret and Christy MacNichol, what a really great cast and a good, wholesome show. I was 13 when this show aired. I miss being a kid with a lot of hopes and dreams and no worries!
Such good memories. Coming home from school and go play outside. Then have dinner do homework. Watch your favorite night time show. Simple times. Good times.😊
Had a crush on Leif as well ~ I had such a wonderful childhood thanks 2 every single family & friends back than. Their all about gone now. But Not in my soul, their memories R. alive & well. That's were they will stay, mine for ever. God Bless
And I def had to watch the ones that had that somber music and was going to deal with hot button issues, like your first period, etc! It would go something like: "..Tonight on a special Family"
This is like looking back thru Tiger Beat magazines and staring at Leif Garrett, David Cassidy, Kristy McNichol and Tatem O'Neal and wishing I knew them. I was @13 when this aired but it still resonated with me. I miss these kinds of television shows.
So thankful I was a kid during the 70s!!!! No cell phones or technology..We entertained ourselves by riding our bikes, making forts, and baseball. The last of the great childhood experiences before technology did take over!!! I wish our today's youth could experience just a moment of our childhood..
I was born in the 2000s and I did the same things, I didn’t get a phone til middle school. I basically lived outside, I hated being inside. So although technology was around, I didn’t use it. I’d give anything to be a kid in the 70s, but at least I got to experience some version of it.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry. This brought back some pretty painful memories and some pretty spectacular ones also. Cheers to the 70's. I wish we'd known back then just how awesome they really were.
There is good and bad in this modern era. I like that there is more diversity and inclusivity, where all sorts of families and relationships are represented. It's really just the trash TV reality shows that I lament.
@@RowanWarren78 The trash tv, such as all of these reality TV shows are the ones people go to for their fix of diversity and inclusion. None of those shows are anything close to this one.
@@evangel7012 Not in my experience. Rather it is the films on carriers like Netflix, documentary and independent films that nurture diversity and inclusion. Reality TV programs seem to exacerbate stereotypes and toxic behavior; putting a spotlight on the lowest common denominator in a way that makes that gesture seem almost like an endorsement.
Interestingly enough, after revisiting this series I realize now in retrospect that there was A LOT of bedhopping and adultery going on in this show's plotlines. Still, I appreciate the way in which they handle discussing ethics and mores in these situautions and some of the touchier subjects overall. Some topics were titillating, but at least the writers tried to show a family that communicated about what they were experiencing as individuals, and as a family unit.
@@RowanWarren78 "Diversity and inclusion" are liberal fantasies and NOT typical reality. Even in progressive communities such as where I live, people who look like one another and/or come from the same socio-economic background tend to socialize with one another. Doesn't mean they hate other groups. You want art to use a quota. That creates material that is contrived and not natural. I don't know if you are trolling or not but I just threw up in my mouth a little and I do consider myself a progressive and I am mixed heritage--not 100% White. But the last thing I ever want to see on tv shows or in movies (even art house types) are token characters. You can smell them a mile away.
Meanwhile in real life, I went to a party ('79) and watched Kristy make out with Jodie all night and then Leif take off in his car drunk, stoned only to crash and nearly kill one of our friends. We weren't so 'innocent' as people thought.
Love this show. Flawlessly acted... wrriten. Low-key, classy, smart, sweet.... they just act, there is no hysterics or nutty characters, just.... acting.
Very well said. I was born in ‘65, and was in grade school when this show was made. We watched it every week. There’s no exaggeration, no negative anti-hero types; all just well written, well performed stories about a close family who works through things. It’s a very positive show with a lot of good life lessons. Modern tv producers have sold their viewers out to the lowest elements of society. Kids need good positive examples like this.
Great episode with a good moral. I was about Buddy's age at the time. One thing teenagers in any era of time need to learn: There's a huge difference between "needs" and "wants". Referring to teenage sex as a "need" is tool of self-centered manipulation, not truly anything meaningful. Too many learn the hard way, unfortunately.
His point was ridiculous. Oh Buddy how I want you and to keep you and so if you don't want to screw I'll take the pressure off you by banging this other chick
I was the same age too but unfortunately i never heard of any teen talk like this in real life not even close there's no way Leif Garrett would be talking like this or about wants and needs a Porky's movie would be more accurate of those times haha
Absolutely the BEST decade for almost everything. Life was simpler. Adults and children had respect. School was taken seriously. TV was WAYYY better than it is now...and this show is a perfect example of that.
The line " there are gonna be so many Cathys in your life" was so thought provoking. That fact and the fact that just because someone else is ready, doesn't have to influence you if your not . How many of us young girls decided to do what we never even were thinking about, all so we could keep a relationship . If I knew then what I know now... Great episode!
That line was also brilliant bc after you thought about it, she could have said “there are gonna be so many Zachs in your life”. But this was a much more realistic line IMO. It got more to the heart of the matter, like don’t do something you’re not comfortable and you normally wouldn’t do with bc you’re jealous of the Cathy of the moment.
I graduated in 1980. There was only one girl who got pregnant in our freshmen year. She left school half way through the school year and I never saw her again. I grew up in a small town and went to a regional h.s. Fast forward to 2009. I was working in DC. I was walking from the metro station to work and I passed by a h.s. There was a truck that was delivering baby supplies to the school. I thought it is important to support the mother and child. The mother needs to finish her h.s. education. But does this program promote having a baby as a teen?
One of Kristy McNichol's biggest strengths was the natural humanity she infused into her character. I miss seeing her on the screen (either small or large).
Born in 78 and remember Kristy being everywhere growing up. Leif's life has been one wild roller coaster of ups and downs. Lisa Whelchel would start playing Blair on on Facts in 1979. I am so glad I grew up with TV before reality shows. Thank's to people here on youtube we can see all this stuff again.
Was a 70’s teen. Greatest time ever. Great tv, movies, music, cars, parties and concerts. Last generation that didn’t have to worry (so much) about gangs, killer drugs or stds that killed. Wouldn’t trade my youth for anyone’s.
I had it even better. I was born in the mid-50’s. Graduated high school in 1973. What a great time to grow up. No Internet, no cell phones, no social media. You didn’t have to make a lot of money to afford a car, an apartment, go to a concert, or go to college. If I could find a time machine, I would be on a continuous loop between 1964 and 1980.
@@wisdomseeker3362 No doubt, the 80s were great for me too. I would say 77 to 87 are the years I would like to relive. I think people that grew up in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s got lucky. I think any time in that 40 year period was a good time to grow up in the US. Before then, life was pretty hard for most people. Going into the 90s, especially the later 90s, life started getting overly complicated.
I miss the days watching this show with my mom. I was 15 then so I related to Buddy. Miss my Mom. She was a good mom to me. I think we were extra close because I was the youngest. All my siblings had already moved out by '78. Great times. Wish I could go back for at least a while!!
I was just thinking the same thing. I wish I could go back to the 1970s... and make it better this time, the best it could possibly be, because now I'd know exactly how to do that.
Bust out mom and dad ancient turntable and that old marantz receiver , a little vintage Earth wind & fire LP and climb aboard you have just stepped into the time machine
Oh the time of the best television and music ever...It’s funny, my boys are 21 and 25 and they have both found the love of vinyl records...the old ones. I told them it makes me so happy to see them love the things I grew up with. We really did have the best tv and music...
Wasn't she though. She and Jodie Foster and so far more mature than the Other Actresses on TV from The Love Boat, Brady Bunch, or even The Waltons during that time. She also should be given kudos for being the First Celebrity to show Bipolarism/Manic Depression and how it affects you. Leif Garret was truly a Teen Tragedy. He drove under the influence, his Friend became paralyzed for life and to this day he has so many problems. Sometimes I wish that he, Les McKeown (The Bay City Rollers), Bobby Sherman, Frankie Avalon, Fabian & Bobby Rydell would have an Intervention with Aaron Carter and try to help him.
@@laminage Actually, Patty Duke was the first public celebrity who would bring bipolar disorder to the forefront. She gave her 1970 Emmy acceptance speech while in the middle of a manic phase of bipolar disorder - and nobody knew what it was. Everybody thought she was on some drug or alcohol trip. She wasn't diagnosed until 1982. I remember seeing Kristy McNichol on Empty Nest and how she abruptly left midseason to address her bipolar disorder in late 1992. She returned for the series finale in the spring of 1995 to applause that was kept in to draw out her scene.
@@millenniumman75 You ar e so right on. I stand corrected. I only remember first seeing Patti Duke Astin in the ABC Afterschool Special Please Don't Hit Me Mom with her Son Sean, and Nancy McKeon (Jo The Facts Of Life). She was a bit before my time. I had no idea of her Legacy in Broadway, Movies and TV. I also remember her and Jimmy her Brother on The Mike Douglas Show singing "Enjoy Yourself" by The Jacksons. It's amazing how Kids who were Actors/Actresses were deluded into believing that they could be Pop Stars. Even Barry Williams (Ex-Greg Brady) admitted that back in the day.
@James Henderson I agree, they were both messed up and shouldn't have been in a car. Leif said he was going to look after him and then he sued Leif for like 7 million dollars. I kind of understand but he could have waited to see if Leif was going to do what he said. I'm probably biased cause I was madly after watching "I was made for dancing all night long".
Had such a crush on Leif Garrett. 70’s were my favorite decade. I drive from NY to FL and back 4x a year. Have my satellite radio on the 70’s channel for the whole 16 hours on 95. Also think The Love Boat was the gateway show to my cruising addiction! ✌️🕯️💛
@@michaelsnyder7442 Yes, we were. The left has wrecked it all. Woke is cheered on and sledge hammered onto us, we are even told what and how to think! Unwholesomeness has taken centre stage, and being locked up for just a wrong opinion is coming,
@@Davey7358-You obviously never watched the show. Jo was never a lesbian. Her boyfriend was a Navy sailor named Eddie Brennan. They almost eloped before Mrs. Garrett found them and talked her out of it.
I watched Family every week in high school. It's one of those shows that is so good you simultaneously want to talk about it but don't want anyone else to know about . If that makes sense.
@@victorevanssr.5034 I know. I'm one of the few that actually likes some of the styles. I love the bell bottoms and the cool Rock n Roll TShirts they had back then! Also another type of bell bottoms were Elephant Bell Bottoms. Really wide ones. The music 🎶 was the bes t. Nowadays are just terrible as far as I am concerned. Thank you my dear.
This show was so ahead of it's time, and back then while we were watching these episodes first run on ABC..we all took this show for granted..oh how I want to go back to 1978!
FLASHBACKS! All I ever wanted to be was Kristy McNichol. Little Darlings was epic to my little 12 year old visions of epic at the time. And it was on! The hair, the clothes, the battle of the network stars.... oh it makes me laugh now but somewhere, not too far away, there's still some Kristy left in this old woman.🙂💛
I loved this family and never missed an episode. Kristy McNichol was an amazing actress and I had hoped that she would do movies when she was older. I miss her on screen. 😞
I lived through the entire 1970s. I watched this episode on TV in the 1970s. Throughout the whole run of the show, this was the best episode of Family, ever. I just watched it again. I can now say, without a doubt, this is the most 1970s thing that I have ever seen! 😂
I loved this show!! I was 10 and was a fan, and back then, that wasn't weird; it was family night viewing. Kristy McNichol (the IT girl back in the day) and darling Leif. Such a different time it was. I feel fortunate to have had my child years in the 70s. We had the best time growing up in one of the best times ever. Thanks for posting this!
I love this show but I really love this episode the most. I remembered how much I loved Leif Garret back then. This episode brings back so many memories. Kristie Mcnichol was a great actress too. Best time of my life.
Yes, I remember when my friends & I heard this episode was going to be aired & we were definitely NOT going to miss it b/c it addressed so much of the dynamic we were already witnessing with boys & girls at school at that time.
Always loved that Buddy’s full name was Letitia.....so cute! Such a formal name for Buddy’s character who was SO casual/informal. The contradiction made her an even more interesting character. Kristy McNichol was such an incredible actress!👍🏻
I always thought that Buddy was a strange nickname for a girl.....Maybe if it was spelled Buddie ... and the show never explains how she got that name.
Thank you for posting this. I enjoyed it all over again like I was 15 again and it was 1978. I am 56 now. I had a huge crush on Leif Garrett. I had forgotten just how cute he was. Thanks for sharing a wonderful memory for me to see again.
Oh my! I was 13 n in love w Leif. Everyone thought Lisa Welchel n I were sisters n I had the same dress as Kristy was wearing. The 70's. They were fabulous then... We grew up to be a part of the 80s. Dang. We were so lucky! I wish I could go back n visit that me. How fun. ❤️
I watched this show when I was 8 and 9 years old. The 70’s and 80’s were awesome My hair was cut just like Kristy’s! . They made great tv shows back then. Those were the good old days. Thanks for putting this on here. 😊
I had the same haircut as KM too! A couple neighborhood boys said I looked like her and i think that was one of the best compliments I have ever received!
@@cindeed4422 Quinn Cummings was really good too. I think she was one of the only add on to a series kids that didn't cause the show to jump the shark.
What I love about ‘Family ‘ is how there was no preachiness. The dilemmas were handled with love and logic. No one saying ‘your decisions are wrong/ immoral ‘, instead, they bolster each other with love and the decisions that he/she make, come from themselves, not an outside influence. Pretty savvy!
The only problem is, this is make-believe and most kids don’t have rational minds. Their minds are not fully developed at that age. So they don’t act like Kristy McNichol. So they need to be told what is right and what is wrong otherwise they don’t know they do have a general feeling on the inside some of them. I believe that everyone has been implanted with right and wrong, but sometimes children and get very confused especially if they’re being manipulated. You can see it here. She’s practically begging for someone to tell her what to do and they’re trying to be so politically correct and tiptoe around things. No one’s giving her any good advice. It’s pretty simple they’re not married all kinds of things could go wrong. She couldn’t get pregnant at 16. So we do need an adult sometimes to say what’s right and what’s wrong what’s moral and immoral. I’m all for talking it out as they do but if the child is not that mature, then more of a direct what is right and what is wrong is needed.
My best friend loved this show and leif Garret I gave her all my tiger beat pictures of him to her😊she had her hair cut like kristy 😊 💖 loved these days thanks for sharing
Because the writers were of the highest caliber, I'm going to surmise that there was ALOT more going on in this episode than meets they eye. For all his swaggering bravado, Zack is just as ill prepared for a sexual relationship as Buddy is. He's probably a virgin himself. Witness the little piece of dialogue at the end at the party. He says he could have invited Lisa Whelchel over for a fling and got the same stomach ache "symptoms" that Buddy did right before she was going to Zack's house. This was a great episode. thanks for uploading it! I was a fan of this show all throughout high school.
Maybe on this Show but I'm certain Leif was already sleeping with his Girlfriend, she lived with him at his Mother's house. Nicolette something ? I think.
@@erinward4293 yes that's it, thank you. Wow, that's a long time for a young relationship. They really loved each other. Wasn't it heard that she tried to help him at one point when he was using heavily? I think he mightve been sexually abused by the Producers and those involved in Hollywood. It's starting to look routine unfortunately.
@@lorimiller4301 Yes. She tried to stage an intervention for him. She had some people over to his place to get him to go to rehab. Unfortunately, when he realized what it was he climbed out of his bathroom window and ran to a gas station, called his home and told everyone to get the f out of his house.
@@erinward4293 yeah now that comes back to me, I didn't really remember at first but what a shame all around. Something happened to make him an addict and I sure feel for him. I watched a video of his Mom and I think she knows. She said "they messed with my Son" and she looked so sad at that moment.
I had such a crush on Leif Garrett! I even met him once in the DFW airport and got his autograph. I used to watch this so I could see him. I loved Kristy McNichol (sp) so much too. Good memories!
I loved this show! Kristy McNichol was EVERYTHING! I've been looking for it for years. It never occurred to me that it was RU-vid until I found episodes of Parker Lewis Can't Lose. The good ol' days!

Just like everybody else posting here, I too loved this as a kid, now way more deeply appreciate the great writing, deep emotions, a family you so want to visit & talk over problems with. 🧡🧡🧡
This was one of my favorite shows and just listening to the music in the beginning made me so nostalgic. God I wish those times were here again. I wish I didn't have all of the bitterness and sadness from what the world has become
Wow, haven't seen this show in forever. It really was so good, the actors so very natural and real. How it makes me miss the 70s, my family, the decade and nostalgia of my childhood years. A perfect and much simpler time to grow up.
I happened to scroll upon a Facebook post of Kristy McNichols from past to present, Couldn't remember the childhood show I loved watching from my innocent years of a child "Family" gosh it brought back memories,me being 9yrs old and of how i wondered what being grown would be like. I'm 56 yrs stb 57yrs. Oh how I miss those youthful days ❤ leaf Garrett poster on my bedrm wall 🥰 had a crush lol ..."Family" 💕
Judi Doyle Me too!! Love Kristy & Sada Thompson was FANTASTIC as her Mother, loved the way she called Buddy by her nickname’Tizzy-Lish ‘LOL & Buddy had a great special relationship with her brother Willy. LOVED THIS SHOW WATCH IT EVERY WEEK
Wow!! I loved this episode!! I used to watch this as a kid, and I had a huge crush on Leif Garrett and I had his album too! But a few years ago I saw him at the Grove mall in LA, and I was in shock!😂I made eye contact and just stared at him like a fool, I was too scared to tell him how crazy I was about him when I was a kid in 1978! He looked at me and probably thought I was crazy 😜.
I remember watching this episode on the extra tv in my parents bedroom, while my dad watched his show in the living room. I never missed an episode of this show.
Family covered topics that NO other tv show in the day covered. It covered one of Child Abuse which hit home because I was being abused and had no one I could tell. We need MORE shows like this!
Kristy and Leif are both so adorable. I was so, so, soooooo in love with Leif back in the day. I remember watching these ep's of Family with him and just holding my breath when I saw Leif on the screen. He's so beautiful. They are both great actors.
Leif Garrett, remember seeing him on that Network of the Stars Sports competition with Kristy and the Runaway's Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Sandy West and Vicky Blue the 70's was a Cool decade even though I was a little girl I still have fond memories of that decade ❤

Although I wasn’t tomboyish like Buddy, she still represented the station in life I was in and it seemed to be the first time on TV that a storyline was written from my perspective. I loved this show.
