For the plot.😂 I'm still team Portwell even though they were different ages. They still built up the characters together in a way that just made sense. Plus, the director mentioned a scene between Gina (Sofia Wylie) and Ricky (Joshua Bassett) after homecoming dance. He mentioned the chemistry between the two actors being really palpable in the scene so it just made sense to him to make Rina canon. I felt it was just for the sake of the plot plus Olivia Rodrigo leaving the show so I guest it made it even more convenient.

@@angelicapersil3837 Exactly. It’s so sad. I adore them so much and it’s clear they only did this for Ricky and Gina. It’s stupid. He doesn’t deserve her after all he put her through. And when Gina was at her darkest, EJ was there. But then when EJ was at his worst, no one was there for him. They all tried to make him feel bad when he was just trying his best. It felt like Gina wasn’t willing to listen to EJ at all. She felt so out of character this season. For my own sanity and mental health, I’m just going to pretend season 3 doesn’t exact. And I don’t want to lose my enjoyment of the show. I love it so much and it’s helped me through really lonely times. In my mind, EJ and Gina are still perfectly happy together.

Everything you said I agree with, and yes your comment (and everything you said) made sense lol. She liked Ricky but he never chose her and was in love with Nini. She learned that and gave up trying to chase after him. What she found in EJ was lacking in Ricky. For instance, Ricky was NEVER interested in her romantically in seasons 1 or 2, no matter what Rina shippers say, and was honestly interested in her because they had similar family troubles. He wanted someone to vent and rant to, and since Nini wasn’t talking to him at the time he went to Gina. Whenever he reached out to her first, it was to vent and not because he liked her in any romantic way (she liked him ofc, and got her hopes up each time he reached out, and got disappointed that he was simply only talking to her because he wanted to vent and not for HER, if that makes sense). He always expected her to care about him and to be there for him even when he couldn’t even address her crush on him or anything like that. She learned that and that’s why she got angry at him. EJ on the other hand was different, he did the smallest things for her simply because he cared about her and never expected anything back. He just did those gestures (the granola bar ON TOP OF already coming to pick her up, the plane tickets, and everything else) because he’s a good guy who cares about and loves her, and she saw that goodness in him. He never did those things because he wanted to win her over or impress her. She understood that. This can be seen with the famous “how are you feeling” scene at the Quinceañero. That’s what set EJ apart from Ricky. Like you said, Portwell brought out the best in each other and most of their season 2 development (especially for EJ) was because of their vulnerability, trust, and friendship with each other. EJ gave her everything, including having her stay in the place that was starting to feel like home for her, just because he’s a good guy who cares about her and loves her. Gina was the one who saw the good in him when no one else did, not even him. She gave him a chance when no one did and helped him turn into a new EJ that wasn’t haunted by his mistakes. She accepted him for who he was, despite his flaws, and he did the same. They leaned on each other and opened up to each other, and it was beautiful to watch. They’re similar but different, and so dynamic in the best way. They worked really well together. They weren’t like Rini - they didn’t miscommunicate except once at the end of s2, and they built their friendship and continuously deepened it through vulnerability and trust, which makes it even weirder how their semester-long trusting relationship got halted simply after 2 weeks of bad communication. If it was Rini I’d buy it, since they’d miscommunicated from the start. Portwell wasn’t like that so it’s just weird. It’s also just weird that Rina happened so quickly. Ricky dated Nini, broke up with her, then dated Lily, broke up with her and then immediately is seen jealous of EJ because of Gina. There was no indication of Rina even hanging out between him dating Lily and then him being jealous. Gina was completely over Ricky after season 2. She never got the chance to love Ricky, she really only liked him and was infatuated with him. EJ and Gina had the entire second semester together and they loved each other, no doubt in my mind. so it’s just so dramatic and stupid that they’d make another love triangle consisting of the exact same guys, and that now two girls have dumped EJ for Ricky (within one year, no less). As for EJ, he especially needs an apology. His characterization was the best, he’s literally a sweetheart. He went into the summer just wanting a simple and relaxing summer with his friends before college yet instead was thrust into the director’s chair, something new and different and especially in his case, pressuring. He had the best of intentions for hyper-focusing on the musical: to prove to his dad he’s not a failure, to make sure Gina had a great summer camp experience especially her experience being the lead in the musical, and to ultimately stay in Salt Lake. I can’t blame him for losing his mind over that stress and pressure. Gina knew how pressured he felt with his dad, and she understood his problems more than anyone, but yet she never tried to help him direct or organize things - which definitely felt out of character for her. In fact, no one tried helping him. He was struggling by himself. Yes, ofc he could have handled his situation better, but still. Sorry for the very very long reply, I just needed to rant I guess lol
