Every gladiator used unique equipment based on their fighting style. Gladiators used a variety of weapons including swords (sica, gladius), spears, daggers (pugio), nets, tridents and more.
They also had special armor that complimented their combat strategy. Most gladiators of the Roman colosseum used bronze helmets, protective arm sleeves (manica), and greaves that protected blows to the legs. A shield was also a common defensive tool. Shields included the Roman scutum and the round/rectangular parmula.
There were many different types of gladiators in ancient Rome, who all competed for their lives. Many went down in history for their fighting success in the arena. Commodus, Flamma and Spartacus were notorious gladiators. They all fought as a specific, specialised class. In this ancient Rome documentary, we look at where these classes of gladiators came from.
Here is a list of gladiators mentioned in this documentary:

Colosseum Road to Freedom is a very good choice. The gameplay is fun and learning curve is not that steep. It's also featuring a good amount of weapon class, including dual sword and bare hand/cestus with many abilities and combos. The graphics are okay, since it's a PS2 game. The game is set around the time of Commodus's assassination, and you play as a gladiator that somehow got dragged into the conspiracy. Very fun game, would recommend.

Hollywood portrays Roman gladiatorial contests as brutal, unruly duels that ended when one of the combatants killed the other. But in reality, gladiators didn't always fight to the death. These ancient Roman athletes were highly trained professionals who made their living fighting, not dying.

Nah, they never killed each other. Gladiators were celebs, you could literally buy carved puppets of them. If they would die, nobody would buy it. It was a normal sport with occasional deaths, not as deadly as they like to show.
@sorsorsor11
@sorsorsor11 3 года назад
@Thor Odinson Of course they did. But I suggest not basing your opinion on a Hollywood movie or on a 10 minute random youtube video. If nothing else read the wikipedia on it it's only 30 pages long. You will see where the deaths are coming from, prisoners, traitors, deserters pit against wild animals unarmed, first timers vs veterans and such. In terms of actual celebrities, they fought for years as they would not be killed. Why would you kill a golden egg laying chicken? You can sell tickets, merchandise and autograph to the crowds. If you are interested read a book like 'The Gladiators: History's Most Deadly Sport' or visit Rome and listen to a 2-3 hour presentation at the Colosseum, all which I did. It's more of a business thing than a glory one which the movies like to push.

Yep and maybe biting each other's ears off when they got no weapons left
@kirongolden742
@kirongolden742 3 года назад
Well, yeah. They definitely did kill each other. Just wasn't always killing. Hollywood exaggerated it. The loser would put a finger up, as a sign of surrender. There is a Latin word for it that escapes me. But, don't think that just because they asked for mercy they always got it. For the most part, experienced gladiators were an investment. You see these gladiators in their magnificent armor and helmet. The lanistaii, I think I spelled it right, the owner of the ludus or gladiator school did not want their investment to died. Why? Gladiators = Prize Fighters. The people who owned these gladiators earned money off them fighting. And finding another Pericles of Macedonia who had 22 victories with 15 kills you would imagine wouldn't be easy. But it happens.

It just shows that technology didn't really progress until very recently. The medieval Knight armour was nothing new but just impracticable in a much larger ancient battlefield
@aiden2358
@aiden2358 3 года назад
Jaza what do you mean impracticable it was also very new. They had new styles to make the armor out of more layers of armor and it could protect a lot more and on a large battlefield armor is very important especially when just about the only thing you need to worry about would be a heavy blunt weapon or someone very skilled. The ability to make weapons and armor changed a lot from the time of Rome to the late medieval period. And if you think armor is heavy you would be correct but since it’s covering your entire body you are still able to move effectively. Especially during the high point of its use.

@@aiden2358 They have found segmented armour with multiple plates for added thickness and indications Roman plate may have been rolled. The clibinarii were supposedly invulnerable to bladed weapons and missiles but the tactic of units of clubmen was used to render them ineffective with blunt blows. This suggests the clibinarii armour may have approached the protection of later medieval knights.
@dean529
@dean529 3 года назад
A lot of that armour looks more like that Parthian Cataphract. The helmet however looks like it came straight out of the medieval period. Considering the time period of all of this I wouldn't be surprised if that was part of this get up, especially considering they killed Crassus.

Excellent video! You just got yourself subscriber!! A disputed claim by some historians is that the Murmillo was often pitted against the Retiarius, reenacting the struggle between a fisherman and a "sea monster". As you mentioned, mismatched combatants added the entertainment value gladiatorial fights, so anything is possible. 27:52 the Bestiarius joined the Colosseum's gladiatorial lineup when exotic animals from conquered territories were brought in as part of the entertainment. However, animals have always been part of the gladiatorial games. Back when gladiatorial fights were merely a part of Roman funeral customs, blindfolded combatants would be pitted against dogs.

The one greave of the "heavy" gladiator types was worn on the opposite leg to the shield, to protect the "sword leg" and not on the same side with the shield
@user-hs5vb6kc9o
@user-hs5vb6kc9o 2 года назад
Are you sure? Why, tho? The logical side is the shield side since you put that foot in front of you when covering the rest of the body behind the shield. The only things sticking up and down are your head and your lower leg. That´s why you use a helmet and a greave on that leg. A greave to protect a leg, and an entire side for that matter, that is completely open anyway is pointless.

@@barryward2128 You do realize that you don´t fight from behind a shield like in the movies, right? If you have a huge scutum hindering your moves you fight stabbing and slashing from behind it, not opening yourself in lunges, it ain´t Olympic fencing. Right even in the way you are describing it happening you're going to be stabbing forward when you do that you going to end up stepping forward with your weapon arms leg which can then get hit by your opponent which is why you would put a greave on the off shield side
@dingliedangliedoodle9261
@dingliedangliedoodle9261 2 года назад
It's on the forward leg, guess which leg is gonna be standing up front in a stance that has you holding a shield. It is meant to protect you in the event an attack got under the shield. Same deal with shoulder and upper arm protection for attacks that get over the shield. Everything you're fronting up for the enemy should be more protected, since you got no choice in mobility there with it always being exposed up front, everything on the half of the shield side should basically be a wall, meanwhile your sword arm and leg stays tucked safely all the way in the back, so you get to time and expose your naked and mobile arm for a swift strike. The back leg rarely gets exposed since it's only there for control and stability, so it wouldn't really need any armour, it's not only a redundancy, it would be detrimental to weigh your control leg down when it moves a lot more than your front leg that mainly works as a pivot. Early period Hoplites and Roman units geared like this too when metal armour was rare and expensive. One side exposed and endures with armour, one side out of danger and strikes out with mobility.

Love your work! Really appreciate the graphics aswell! ... however. I think you'll find that the 'movement speed' of these heavier armoured gladiators would not have been as slow as you think! Have you ever seen fully armoured medieval knights full contact sparring? (RU-vid) Not slow at all
@amoshall3690
@amoshall3690 3 года назад
While you're correct about medievel full plate, armor back then dodnt have the technology that medievel armor did, for instance the crupellarius was wearing extremely heavy armor, and they didn't have a harness like medievel plate armor did so the distribution of weight wasn't very good, and those helmets would have weighed a TON for the amount of metal needed for protection because the quality and type of metal wasn't the same(steel wasnt common) and why the majority of gladiators wore very little armor so they could maintain mobility and because the weight of the metal would have weighed alot from the thicknesses for enough to provide adequate protection

@@wesurftexasbrown Sigh. "Sagittarius " means 'Archer' in Latin so the gladiators who used archery were named archers and the constellation, which resembled an archer is named (wait for it) The Archer. Another valuable lesson on why no one should try to learn anything from randos posting horsecrap on RU-vid comments section. And that goes for the 5 randos that gave a thumbs up to your nonsense.

The Saggitarius were not unpopular due to spectators being shot by accident...they were unpopular because they were boring. The gladiatorial spectacle was more akin to today's WWE pay per view matches than it would be to UFC fights. The gladiators were trained to fight with big, dramatic moves and were supposed to drag a fight on and keep it interesting for a long time, all while telling a story through the fight itself. Some historians have even suggested that they choreographed their fights to a certain degree to allow for key moves/moments to play out. Watching some dude shoot someone with a bow and arrow is just lame compared to what the other types of gladiators would do.

I'm shocked how he doesn't mention not every gladiator fight was to the death!!!?? maybe for extra drama? In fact more often the loser was spared because gladiators weren't cheap/disposable as some movies might make you think.

They should make a gladiator game that lets you choose any of these gladiator types. Each one would have its own stats and can increase them as you lvl up. It would also be online with up to 40 players. It can also be 3v3 or 1v1. Even 6v6. Animals would also be in the arena. Like a lion or a tiger. Even a elephant. Or your armor customization. It would also be awesome to have training levels and a story to it. Kind of like spartacus.

There was a PC game like this about 15 years ago. I download from online. You could choose from just a couple classes. As you leveled up more classes opened. One problem was very few people played it. And there was a timer. ( like 24 real hours) between when you could fight someone you just won / lost too.. And perma death was a possibility with any match. ( which you could make another from the beganing) But back to the timer. You maybe waiting for hours for your next fight. You had to pay in ( Roman money) to train up once past the beganing. And the only way to make money was to win fights. ( you couldn't buy it) You could only have 4 avatars total at any given time. And the timer was account based. It was fun. But time between fight was terrible. I do not remember the name of the game and have not seen it for a long time. Im sure it was in beta at the time. I remember I had downloaded it when I downloaded another good beta game that just don't catch on.

@@keen2b well I would gladly end a lot of pain and suffering in this world. Unfortunately there are laws keeping me from doing it. If it was up to me. There would be less then 1/100 of the people living now. There would be no welfare. No socail medicine And no socail programs. These all BREED lazy unproductive people. And people that believe they are of a much higher social class. Don't misunderstand me. I'm low. All I care about is food, water, and a roof over my head. I live off grid and live a hunter gather lifestyle. I no longer wish to have riches. Why should I? So I can make others rich that don't put in the work?
