You kept saying "sealing ritual" and I kept hearing "ceiling ritual" and I was so confused. I was thinking maybe they had to do some ritual on a ceiling. Sealing ritual makes so much more sense.
Ironically Shub relaxes me, because she just wants more children to be born. She isn't actively out to kill people. Edit: I've been reading pathfinder lore, and Lamashtu is the goddess of pregnancy, exept she is a demon and actively pushes for different species breeding toghether, her blessing consist in terrible mutations, her endgame is 1 turn the goddess of beauty into a breeding addict so that beauty will forever be mutated into ugliness and 2 have entire worlds turned into a bloody orgy. Literally her cult is matriarchal because who has more children is higher in the hierarchy, therefore men infect themselves with parasites so that they can simulate carrying a pregnancy and gain more prestige, then there are the men who through magic and alchemy manage to get pregnant.
@@thecreepoid901 not even, she is just motherhood (given that "mother" is a mostly earth-centric concept). Most of the fucked up shit made in her name is a full decision of her cults, she doesn't advocate death per se, just death to nourish her followers, just like a mother wolf wouldn't feel hate towards the rabbit it kills so that her udders are full of milk for her cubs. I don't know wh40k, but from what I recall the chaos gods still want to invade the world. Shub just wants more children to come suckling to her breasts, more lovers to impregnante her, more of her priestesses to be impregnated and birth new members of the cult. Shub would kill a whole army to protect her followers and immediatly after sing a lullaby to a crying child. She is incredibly animalistic.
This is the first of your videos the algorithm has shown to me After watching about 5 minutes of it I am convinced that I want to go back and watch them all starting at the beginning.
One think that i love about the world of Conan is that evil is not always evil sometimes its just that they have no concept of evil they have no malice toward people we just perceive them as evil since their actions go against our morals
Thank you for all of the excellent Conan content. I am starting to build a D&D campaign that will combine the world of Athas from Dark Sun with Hyboria, so your channel is a super valuable resource for me
This sounds fantastic, and it should be a Bannerlord total conversion mod. Realms Forgotten already exists but it has Athas as a region (perfect), and really no Conan stuff I've noticed. Still great though. I just wish I had nerd friends who would do TTRPGs like this with me 🥲
An escaped criminal from the fire demon controlled civilisation would be so fun to role-play in the conan rpg, you're sitting across from a axe wielding barbarian and rogue thief of bel who kills everyone he steals from while you think you're just as guilty and just as bad a person for littering. Paranoid that someone will find you and drag you back to the fire demon to be eaten, so you try to be just stay on the run, use false names, lie about your past but continue to always say please and thank you as a force of habit.
I kinda like Ishtar and Shub-Niggurath actually being the same thing more than it being an insideous subversion, just makes the overall thing feel more interesting.
Excellent,Excellent,Excellent!!! This video has been immediately ensconced next to your Archeron video and your video on magic. My playlist, Conan Loremaster is rife with your great work sir. Thank you truly, once again.
I think it would be interesting if a dark young imprints on a particular cultist that is trying to escape the cult, and helps him in indirect ways since it still would rather not attack the cult itself
The True Gods / Four Winds is such a great idea, it sounds so much fun to have a group of players accidentally stumble into their community and just see what happens
Thanks for the video, I don't think I would know about Bel otherwise and he really seems to be sort of divine figure I guess that sounds like a simple character but has a very complex thing around him. For example like how I said during the video that he might just be worshiped in no small part because he is capable of more or less jailbreaking people out of the afterlife so that they aren't punished for all eternity (or at least when they still have a body)
I have been listening to your channel for almost two years now while doing research for a conan/call of Cthulhu homebrew im still putting together. I am so happy to hear you can finally getting the love you deserve because you make amazing videos. You are awesome for making all these and i can see all the love and work you put into each video. Thank you for making these, they are such wonderful world building tools and I appreciate your passion in making them. Keep up the fabulous work! 💖
Another use of Shub and her Dark Young, or as Ainz called them, cute baby goats was from the Japanese series Overlord. Ainz sacrificed 70,000 enemy soldiers to summon her Dark Young. Seeing those things animated and listening to them beating like goats was something else.
That episode was wild. For a few seconds I couldn't believe what my eyes were seeing, because I never thought Overlord would feature Lovecraft mythos entities, but here we are.
I'm only 20 minutes in and I'm already pausing just to take the notes that yr inspiring for me to use in my own setting, I really enjoy your content anyway, but this is really knocking things out of the park for me, Shub has been a little more mysterious for me in determining how to implement it's cult in an ongoing campaign but like the way yr talking about Shub here really got my imagination going. The idea of evil "good" guys who aren't really pulling yr leg, they just think you could do with having a few extra, lining up to oppose demons of old night and probably viewing themselves as paragons of virtue all the whole is just... Delicious, disgusting also, but it's like you said: "Conan Slaanesh".
In Dark Ages Cthulhu there was a pdf I purchased like 10 years ago called: The Abbey (I think) which features a Shub cult which is subtle enough that I think even some of the members are ignorant of it's true nature, and believe themselves to be Gregorian monks. That would mesh really well with what yr talking about about here.
Always love these lore videos of yours especially in regards to your gods and monsters of the Hyborian Age & Thurian Age! I gotta take notes for my own channel. Your videos I daresay are the best fantasy ones on yt alongside those of Girlnextgondor!
Shubniggurath also has another parallel in Glorantha with the Broos. They are basically beastmen from warhammer, in fact I think the beastmen are directly inspired by broos. They are the offspring of Thed, the goddess of _sex of the non consensual variety._ They reproduce by mating with pretty much anything, are all male, and the resulting broo baby takes the traits of whatever animal was their mother. Oh and they also eat their way out of their mother when done gestating. They are also, because they are the offspring of Thed, inextricably connected to Chaos (basically the force of everything evil in Glorantha) and are hated by everyone because they also spread diseases wherever they go, Nurgle worshipper style. They are also fully aware of how disgusting they are and hate themselves for it, and hate that, even if they do change for the better, being broos, everyone will consider them kill on sight anyways. Fun stuff.
Peter Sandersons 5E Cthulu Mythos book is probably the best 20 bucks I ever spent. It’s soooo in depth with the monsters, cults, sanity and dreamlands potential rules.
Have you considered making a video about the various civilizations, races, Gods and monsters of The Thurian Age? Or even Elder Night? I think it would be very interesting.
Good job on another good video grim! I recently re-read tower of the elephant so hearing Bel’s name immediately caught my attention. Keep up the good work and know that it’s very appreciated. Your passion for Howard’s universe shows, and imo is comparable to his efforts with paying homage to the things he enjoyed in his writing. I think especially with the theorycrafting you bring to the table, it really shows how much care and admiration you have for Hyborea. Looking forward to another great piece of content from you, whether it’s Conan, Warhammer, World of Darkness or anything else.
one possibility is that Ishtar once was a mask, but as Shub Niggurath was worshiped by humans and mortals, Ishtar became another aspect of her. Lack of knowledge is cured by the acquisition of knowledge, and learning of the human/earth idea of "mother" may have instilled new ideas into Shub Niggurath.
Shub Niggurath is scary in the fact that she's almost represents the blind throbbing heat of creation, destruction, and evolution. While her sibling Nyarlathotep is about evolution with aims through madness , Shub Niggurath is about true evolution, blind ordered chaos. She is inside us, the need to procreate driving our species. She is Shiva, She is Mara, the never ending wheel of Samsara, except there is no Nirvana, only the turning of time. To paraphrase Carl Sagan "All evolution needs is Time and Death" and that is Shub. She is Mother Goddess and Father time. As new father, you can't stop time and the need to procreate is deep. In sense she terrifying in that she's not even evil shes a force of the material universe. On a funny niche Internet way Ive always thought of her as the Parton Goddess of Gooners.
I'm probably not going to have a d&d game set in Hyborrean age (maybe some other time but not now. ) But I have new ideas for my call of Culthulu Champaign thanks grimdark! ❤😎
I know you're a busy man but I have to ask, could you check out Grimdark Future/Age of Fantasy by One Page Rules and maybe cover their lore? Also Greetings from Puerto Rico!.
All of these sound great, I really need to use the happy Wind of Fire in something! Was he the only True God with a physical form? I'm guessing yes since he's corrupting the mountain people into feeding him, but their concept would have come from somewhere. Maybe as a reaction to discovering this guy up the mountains? To not displease him?
Possibly, I like the idea of other elementals being around, I will say other than the amazons’ demon trees I have yet to encounter a religion that worships the elements (even then the demon trees aren’t really the same thing)
I could see some fun possibilities with the villainous zeal idea. Maybe embrace the idea of order at any cost by basically making the punishment for crimes being sacrificed to a demon/dark god/old one fitting of your actions. The idea of sending them to where they belong in their eyes. Everything in place, everything as it should be. Perfecting the world with complete lack of malice, bias, or empathy. At least that's what the priests preach... ....after all what is a good story about the danger of excess zeal without a healthy dose of hypocrisy, self hatred, and projecting.
So is Ishtar her own being? Or is she another name for Shub? I ask because all of the other Conan lore I've read had never mentioned a connection between the two, just that the Conan Ishtar is very similar to our own Ishtar.
Sorry this isn't relevant to the video, but did something happen to your introduction to Robert Howard video? That was really well made, and I wanted to send it to some doubters, but I see no trace sadly.
Hey sir love your show I wanted to ask you a question since you're more knowledgeable about this to me I don't remember where I heard this but I wanted to shoot it by you to see if you can confirm her tonight for me was Conan a home burglar by trade like he was a more thief than he was barbarian kind of a thing I don't remember where I saw this but in the movie he uses a rope and he starts at the top of the tower to work and he works his way down I guess that's one of his tricks or something he does that a lot and he starts to stop works his way down I might have heard this in the old comics old the old ones can you confirm or deny this for me ty sir .
His life followed many phases -Mercenary -Thief -Barbarian (TM) -Revolutionary (Accidentally) -King -Emperor (technically) That’s what I based my patreon tiers off of
@@GrimDarkHalfOff thank you sir I don't remember where I heard that at but I always thought it was funny when I heard that I just remembered sticking in my head thinking that Conan was like a home burglar again thank you grimdark you're doing the God's work.
Interestingly Enough... Mommy Shub could possibly do quite a lot for a party of Hyborean PCs....but... ya'll gonna put out for it just close your eyes, Lads.. it'll make it less gross. LMAO
Do the Hyperboreans worship any gods other than Bori? Specifically the current evil ruling class of sorcerers. I tried looking through the Modiphius book on gods and cults but they only have Hyperboreans as Bori worshippers which I know from your videos is basically underground and outlawed by the ruling caste. As necromancers I’d think maybe they’re Derketo worshippers but that isn’t in the book I have. Maybe their just apathetic to the gods? If the answer is gonna be in a future video don’t spoil it though just let me know lol
Not a fan of the "X", Wife of "Y", son of "Z" thing. from what I can tell the whole "Lovecraft family tree" was taken from a letter Lovecraft wrote that was meant to be a joke, but everyone now seems to take it seriously. I mean the very idea of any of these entities being a family or needing some kind of mating on a cosmic level is kinda dumb. Sure, on a microscopic level with living things like humans It could be a thing, but Lovecraft never intended the family associations to be part of the Mythos.
Yeah it was, I used to have a video moaning about Derleth messing things up, but then I just enjoyed the universe and my complaints seemed childish The family tree was intended as a joke, but it’s also been used by future authors to make the universe more fleshed out
