So many people say they can't garden or have houseplants because they "kill everything" but the reality is all of us have messed up, that's how we learn. One of my favorite things about plants is they teach us about long-term gratification. It takes a lot of hard work and time but eventually pays off. Thanks for another funny and inspiring video :)

That’s100% how we learn! We forget this as adults, but as children the world is full of failed experiments that we’re constantly learning from! Haha, so true - and houseplants are very deceiving - they seem like they should be easier because they’re all packaged up but in my experience they’re so much harder to keep alive than plants in the ground!

I have a bad habit of weeding but not mulching right away. Perfect environment for every weed seed in the ground and that blows in. The garden is looking great!

It's pretty amazing how fast they move in! There are some interesting methods to kill off the seed bank that I've been considering for larger plantings like a meadow - been curious to try them but a little afraid that the weeds will outsmart me (again)! 😅 Thank you, and thank you for watching! 💓

This was a random recommendation, I was surprised to see such a small channel because your commentary is delightful. Love this channel, great job

I slonk up less by purchasing plants that easily propagate or multiply on their own. Often one plant from the shop can be divided into 20 or 30 baby plants. Then all is needed is a bit of work and time and watch them fill in. Patience is the hardest part. But eventually nature does most of the work.

😂 Totally! It is hard to be patient but the pay off is grand! I felt this extra when I saw the price of one of my big hostas at the garden center - almost $30! I divided it earlier this year and was feeling good to have saved the money!

Haha, my husband thought he’d killed them and felt so bad - I added that bit into the video partly for his emotional healing 😂 But they’re fine! 😅

Rabbits or deer ate small hydrangeas and an oak tree sapling I planted. I look forward to your video about how to pave rabbits. 😁 Anyway, I built cages similar to yours and the plants recovered fully. 👍🏼 In the battle against weeds I follow 2 rules: minimize soil disturbance and mulch thickly.

It’s amazing what some plants can survive! 😅 Sound advice!! Minimize disturbance is a hard one, but you’re totally right! I feel like even just weeding is often enough disturbance to cause an influx of weeds!

@@gardenforbirds In my main flowerbed I stopped pulling weeds because I figured it loosened the soil. Instead I cut the weed off at the base and pile mulch over it. That bed has very little weed pressure so it seems to work (or maybe the thick layer of mulch overall should get the credit, I don’t know).

👀 Aha! I’ll definitely give that a try!

Your garden will be slonking gorgeous in time! When I start with bare roots or tiny plants, I've found I have better luck when I give them a head start in a pot. Softer soil than my native clay and easier to protect from critters. Then when I plant them out they're better prepared to fend off those slonkin varmints, I mean, wildlife. 🐇 🦌

Haha, love it! That’s great advice, I definitely threw these little babies to the wolves! I had decent luck planting directly in the past, but this particular soil is compacted and has a lot of granite from when they added the pad for the shed to sit on! I think you’re right that some more time in friendlier soil could have helped!

YOU make me laugh! I'm afraid I will burn through all of your videos rather quickly and then what fun will life be? Well, Spring is next Tuesday so perhaps I will struggle through. ;-) Did you find out that the bamboo doesn't last very well. When I lived in Kentucky I had a huge patch of bamboo behind the house (talk about an invasive) and when I tried using it for stakes it rotted so fast it was totally annoying.
@gardenforbirds
@gardenforbirds 5 месяцев назад
Haha, working diligently on the next one! It's definitely slow going, but I work about 9 nights out of 10 to try to keep things moving! Interesting - my bamboo didn't rot so far, but it is getting sun-damaged and brittle. And it is otherwise proving somewhat useless against my hungry groundhog friend, so I had to switch to something sturdier that I could drive further into the ground. Hopefully when these plants are more established, they'll be able to hold their own against all the mammals - we'll see!
