At 16:23 tengen's father was so cruel that he made everyone in his clan fight against each other and the winner gets to lead the clan..... And it's during that battle where tengen had to fight his own brother (everyone were forced to wear a mask so he didn't know) and KILLS his brother brutally..... It's this guilt that forced him to become a hashira and told his wifes to value their lives..... Hope it helps and ignore my spelling mistakes (srry)
