Hogan’s Heroes was a fictional and somewhat farfetched sitcom set in a Nazi German prisoner-of-war camp during the Second World War. The series ran for six seasons from September 1965 to April 1971. Notably, the program had the longest broadcast run for a series inspired by the war.
While the unique setting of Hogan’s Heroes certainly drew in many viewers, the majority who stuck around to experience the series from start to finish did so because of its excellent cast. Bob Crane Starred as Co. Robert E. Hogan. His character coordinated an international crew of Allied prisoners secretly running a special ops group from the camp.
Then you had Werner Klemperer who played Col. Wilhelm Klink - a gullible commandant of the camp - and John Banner who portrayed the hapless yet lovable Hans Schultz.
Fans of the 1960s sitcom just got some bad news. As of November 2022, all Hogan’s Heroes Cast Members Have Officially Died. Watch this video in full to learn about who just passed while taking a look back at some of the other cast members of the iconic series who are no longer with us.

The thing that I always figured was most remarkable about Hogan's Heroes was that it went on the air only 16 years after the end of WWII. A very large percentage of the audience surely remembered the horrors of the war and a large percentage had to be veterans.

What I find interesting is that Werner Klemperer, John Banner and the actor who played Major Hochstedder all came from Jewish backgrounds as did Robert Clary and yet they took on the roles of Germans on Hogans Heroes. I remember some years ago the actor who played Gestapo Major Hochstedder had said that he didn't mind playing the Gestapo major as long as audiences enjoyed seeing him lose to Hogan and his men. He also had a role in Judgement At Nuremberg. Richard Dawson also played the role of a game show host in the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie The Running Man in which he played the villain in the movie.

How about Howard Cain (Major Hochstetter), Leon Askin (Genreral Burkhalther), Bernard Fox (Colonel Crittendon) and Nita Talbot (Myria)? Guess the recurring roles don't rate a mention either. Ivan Dixon left HOGAN'S HEROES to pursue a career as a movie director. THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR and TROUBLE MAN, although dismissed in the Seventies for being "blaxploitation films" are good enough to have earned Dixon a film retrospective a few years ago at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Incidentally, the pilot episode featured a Russian prisoner named Ivan, played by Ned Glass ("Doc" from WEST SIDE STORY) but the character was dropped when the first season aired in color.

Leon Askin* (General Burkhalter) is not covered, here. (He, too, was Jewish: suffering personally from the atrocities of Hitler's Nazi regime, having received a beating from the SS because he was Jewish.) >>> The slash (scar) on Leon's face was attributable to that beating and can be seen in episodes where Burkhalter's face was filmed close up. Askin had a long and illustrious career in acting: both in the old country and in the U.S. He died in 2005 at age 97. *Leon Askin was born Leo Aschkenasy, in Austria.

HOWARD CAINE (born Howard Cohen) was also a Jewish actor, who brilliantly portrayed that ruthless (and often clueless) Gestapo officer, Major Wolfgang Hochstetter. He added the "necessary tension" between his character and that of soft-hearted, gullible Klink. Note: In real life, Tennesee-born Caine (Cohen) had to get rid of his Southern accent, in acting school: and, in the process, eventually became an expert in "many different accents"-- both foreign and domestic.
