Can’t beat a Victorinox product. For the money, nothing touches a Vic’s quality. Victorinox “snap” has been legendary for over a century. The fit and finish on vintage Swiss Army knives is extraordinary.

Growing up, I had four brothers, a sister, myself, and my dad who carried multi-tools on a regular basis. I carried Gerber; my dad, sister, and one of my brothers carried Swiss-tools; and the rest of my brothers carried Leatherman. We all used them hard and in my experience the Swiss-tool is the most durable long term. They also hold their finish fantastically well.

I carry the victorinox swisstool (not the x, the old style swisstool), have been carrying it for years. I've worked on irrigation pivot systems and on solar panels installation, everyone in my team owned a leatherman except me. no-one actually carried his tool because they were constantly breaking- except me. the victorinox just has better steel, better heat treatment, and better overall quality then anything else out there. since then I've tried gerber, leatherman, and sog (curse these sogs!!!) multitools- nothing compares to the victorinox.

I’m sure a few who have watched this will, like me, own both the Wave+ and the Spirit X. For me, the Victorinox wins hands down, accompanying me pretty much everywhere, whilst the Leatherman lounges in the kitchen bitsa drawer with all its add-on bits and ratchets. Handling, fit and finish, and superb quality trump very minor gaps in utility. I simply like holding the thing.

A replaceable wirecutter might seem like a convenient benefit at first glance, but there's a downside. First, it essentially defers the cost of replacing the wirecutter in the event of a break from Leatherman's warranty onto the user. Secondly, because it's no longer integrated with the pliers head, it creates a weak spot in the pliers, rendering them more fragile than if the head and cutters were one piece.

The price of the replaceable wirecutter is literally the same as the shipping cost to ship your multitool under warranty. And you don’t have to miss your tool a couple weeks, which is a big plus for me! Because i love my tools lol

It's not a problem as long as you know the tools limits. I have done hardcore work all day cutting fence wire all day and used my wave for hvac for a year and it has never broke . Just get a pair of dikes if you have too. No multi-tool will ever take the place of a real tool. You cannot beat Leatherman's warranty. Their tools are still very high quality

I'm a huge Leatherman fan. Been using them for a long time. I think you're dead on with the quality difference with the Victorinox. The Spirit has been my main carry now for a couple years and it's just the nicer tool. Leatherman's tend to have harder steels but the corrosion resistance, fit and finish, ergonomics and ease of sharpening the blade on the Spirit is just too tough to beat.

I ordered both the Wave+ and Spirit X sent the Wave back. The fit and finish is much better on the Spirit. The way the handles curve and are smooth make it much more comfortable to use. I use mine daily at work it’s held up well. As far as warranty I did snap off the Phillips bit off on my Spirit, warranty was a nightmare sent it to them in November got a new one back end of February. Apparently Victorinox doesn’t change the individual tools if you break one. I was surprised they mailed the old one back with the new one.

I've used most of them when I was a flight mechanic, I was issued the Gerber with the slide out Jaws (those broke) , then transitioned to the leatherman surge, i gifted that to an Australian flight mechanic who helped me on a difficult repair on the road. I then picked up the SA at their warehouse sale (the US headquarters is near my house). I've used those for a, bit and finally went to the leatherman skeletool cx.. (much lighter, and has just the tools needed for my job.

Don't worry about the wire cutters. The warranty of Victorinox is legendary (and pretty much life long). As a Swiss guy, I carry SAKs and Victorinox Multitools daily since I was a kid. (Its kind of "thing" here) Every time something on a tool stopped working, I gave it to the next knife shop, they sent it to Victorinox and a couple of days later you get the call that its fixed and you can go and pick it up in the shop. One time I broke off the main blade (absolutely my fault and I told them that it was my fault) and they replaced it for free without asking.

Nice to see something a little different from you and Multi-tools IMO are clearly under appreciated in the knife community as they can really be very useful in a day to day EDC providing it has the tools you need choice is important. I was carrying an older tool for a while(Leatherman sideclip) and decided to try a Leatherman P4 for my trade/warehouse job and was really impressed with its usefulness, Then when Leatherman had a promo for the ratcheting adapter I bit on a Charge+ TTi and this tool has a more rounded EDC selection of tools and this TTi version has titanium scales and a S30V knife blade vs 154CM and the replaceable Jaws are great and are capable of cutting band steel which in warehouse and shipping roles is a plus. Thanks for the venture into the slightly different avenue.

I got a black Wave+ as my first multi tool, and after extensive cleaning (the poor thing was quite greasy and the paint was coming off), then a bit of lubricating and tightening, it's amazing. My gateway into multi tools was a Scout knife made in the 50’s. I was blown away by the utility that just a flathead screwdriver offered, and actually found myself regretting not having it with me just 48 hours after receiving the knife. From there I found out about camp knives, so I got myself a Victorinox Fieldmaster since it has a saw, scissors and Phillips screwdriver as well as the standard flatheads. After about four months of carrying the Vic, I finally started feeling the need for EDC pliers. My EDC consists of tools that are very small, but function at a much higher weight/size class (Spyderco Dragonfly 2, Olight S1R Baton II, ESEE Izula, and the Fieldmaster). After hunting around for a long time, I settled on the SOG PowerPint. It’s got compound leverage in the handles, so you get twice as many pounds of force out of the pliers as you put into the handle. I heard very mixed reviews about it, but as I asked questions I found out that people’s opinion of it improved as they used it longer. Now, the fit seems just fine. Every tool in the handles sit flush. The lock bar properly engages when it’s supposed to. The handles open and close very smoothly, if a little stiffly at first. The finish, on the other hand, is a very different story. Machine markings on the sides of the plier heads. Rough edges on the sides of the handle tools. A can opener that was so lightly sharpened that it looks like SOG just left it near a belt sander for a few minutes and assumed that was good enough. But as for the function of the pliers themselves, I am perfectly happy. They are more than capable of handling any unexpected pliers-related task you might bump across in life. I wouldn’t count on them as my primary tool on a construction site, but just shy of those demands they perform probably about as well as tools twice their size. (Just don’t rely on the goofy handle tools too much.) Plus, it’s about the size and weight of a 91mm Victorinox, so it’s very easy to pocket.

Great video, but you made one error I would like to highlight. Exchangeable leatherman cutters, they are not covered by the warranty and if you break them they offer to sell you replacements. However with the Victorinox the non-replaceable cutters are part of the multitool and are covered by the life long warranty. As such if they get chewed up over time, send it in and they will replace the tool. It's not like that as you said "that's it for the tool", quite the contrary.

I chose mx clip over wave because - all tools can open with out opening plier - mx clip has more tools (22) and wave less (18) - no awl on Wave - high rust resistance - softer steel easily to sharpen -softer steel also will bend and not break - spine of large screw driver is thicker and more robust for prying - more compact - ergonomic handle - will not be pinch by the closing plier accidentally like wave - like the shiny finish of spirit than wave; look more elegant and cleaner - easier to maintain - clip ready there

Iv had my swistool x for 13years, it came with the victoronox ratchet, extension and bot holder, that are also sold separately. They all fit nicely into the leather holster. The leatherman rathcet lools way more cumbersome, and you loose one pr twp tool slots, just to use the multitool as a handle. That new victorinox clip looks nice, and i will be buying one for my trusty old swisstool. Not too keen on the opening flap on the blade, as it comes in the way when using the side printer ruler, and im carrying a knife anyway, so the blade on the tool is rarely used.

I've carried and used leatherman MT's for over an decade in industrial work, I've absolutely maxed out on hard use on them and only experienced minor issues, they are rather bomb proof... that being said i wish i had as much experience with victorinox MT's because they seem even better, maybe i like the leatherman plier heads better and definitely do like the cutters better, but with victorinox you have basically every tool under the sun at your hands, almost every job site that has tools available they always lack a knife, small flathead and a file. Victorinox has definitely higher quality but leatherman has the innovation and ease of use going for them

I had that but it’s not worth the price so I sold it and the quality of the Swiss tool spirit mx clip is way better and easier to edc as well. I wouldn’t recommend the charge tti over a wave for that price. U don’t need upgraded materials on a multitool and are also much harder to maintain which beats the purpose of a multitool then for me and the weight reduction of the charge tti can hardly be noticed compared to the wave. The Swiss tool spirit mx clip is a win for me cuz it actually feels way less bulky in the pocket and the quality is any day better than leatherman
@ayaansen2307
@ayaansen2307 2 года назад
Victorinox is way more durable than leatherman. The price on that charge tti is a scam and honestly it’s a rust bucket despite the scales being titanium cuz the tools are not. And the on top of that the file on the charge tti scrapes against the handles of the tool and wears out the handles and of course that can be adjusted by loosening the screws on the pivots but that’s just a clear lapse on attention to detail by leatherman. And it was not just on my charge tti plus, even other ppl on RU-vid have complained about the same issue and once u get ur hands on a victorinox Swiss tool esp with the one handed opening blade and the pocket clip, u can’t look at a leatherman tool the same way. This doesn’t mean leatherman isn’t a great multitool. U just start to notice the quality issues even more next to the victorinox. Also the victorinox also does come with a bit extended and a bit kit. The same place where the pocket clip fits from the side, on the other side u can attach a bit extender. As well as a corkscrew with The Eye glass screw driver which u can’t do on a leatherman. So other than the replaceable wire cutters on the leatherman which personally I don’t need cuz I’m not gonna abuse a multitool plus victorinox has a life Long warranty and can replace the entire tool if u need to to a brand new one, don’t see any reason why leatherman is any better. In fact the victorinox has so much more to offer than the leatherman. The leatherman surge just has better scissors that’s all. The other leatherman scissors on the wave and charge are tiny and not outside opening. So many reasons why I prefer the victorinox any day over a leatherman 🙏🏾

"I don't need more than two multi-tools" First off, what does "need" have to do with it? Second, you will usually NEED at least two multi-tools, minimum. One to hold the nut, one to screw in the screw. That's how it usually works out because that nut is just gonna spin if it's not held with the pliers.

I have to agree, on both counts. As someone with a Leatherman in the right-hand pocket and a Swiss Tool in the left-hand pocket, I just don't need to compromise, I don't need to 'wish' that I had brought my other tool, and I don't lack a convenient way to hold both sides of something at the same time. I think the Victorinox is better finished but leatherman is more user oriented, I own both and both are excellent tools but the tools that get more use in a multi tool are pliers knife and screwdriver and those tools are far superior on the leatherman imo, replaceable wire cutters, 154cm or s35vn blade, exchangeable driver bits and i can close the blade one handed that for me is a very useful feature on any knife. I edc a charge+ and carry the Swiss army while hunting. I had i think a gerber or an sog with quick deployment but one time (in heavy use) it just broke and hurt my hand quite a bit, i can’t tell if it was a one off or issues with qc. I never contacted the manufacturer because even if they actually replaced the whole tool i wasn’t going to risk using it again. All anecdotal but i hope it helps. The scissors are a lot nicer on the Swiss though

The victorinox has an actual ratchet and bit kit. You made it seem like only leatherman has it. Literally the victorinox has a separate ratchet that stores in the sheath and is way better than the leathermans bit driver

@ayaansen2307
@ayaansen2307 2 года назад
@ayaansen2307

Also the victorinox also does come with a bit extender and a bit kit. The same place where the pocket clip fits from the side, on the other side u can attach a bit extender. As well as a corkscrew with The Eye glass screw driver which u can’t do on a leatherman. So other than the replaceable wire cutters on the leatherman which personally I don’t need cuz I’m not gonna abuse a multitool, I don’t see any reason why leatherman is any better. In fact the victorinox has so much more to offer than the leatherman. The leatherman surge just has better scissors that’s all. The other leatherman scissors on the wave and charge are tiny and not outside opening. So many reasons why I prefer the victorinox any day over a leatherman 🙏🏾

I never had a Surge that lose. Actually I use my Surge heavy everyday and it’s still solid. Leatherman all day. My Swisstool stays in the drawer. I EDC my Surge with ratchet attachment bit kit and extra blades for saw. I work just about everyday though. Absolutely love my Surge. I also carry my AD 10 everyday which a lot of ppl wouldn’t. I use both tools multiple times per day and neither have ever let me down

Hi MC I used Leatherman over the 15 years. First I have wave now I'm using 300 super tool, it's bigger but for me it's better because off job what I do. My opinion is that multi tool must the be durable and strong not shiny...don't understand me wrong Victor inox is also good no doubt...but Leatherman is number one for multi tool...take care

The wire cut on the Swiis tools have a life time waranty, and over all the quality of the Swiss tool have no match with any multi tool. I like your review, I collect multi tools and have many, I pamper them and seldom use them.

the only thing victorinox missing is really the changeable Wire Cutter Insert, I use to think that is unnecessary luxury design until i have destroy my skeletool wire cutter over many years of use, now it no longer cut wire. i can still use the main blade after all these years of sharpening, only shorter for a few mm. but I can't fix back the wire cutter part.

and for the screwdriver part, i mostly work with electric things, 6mm bit is not my cup of tea, my EDC driver is HOTO 24-in-1 Precision Screwdriver. this Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit MX could be my new EDC,,,,,, i will just wait for skeletool with changeable wire cutter insert
