Shannon Hoon, lead singer of the rock band Blind Melon, filmed himself from 1990-95 with
a Hi8 video camera, recording up until a few hours before his sudden death at the age of 28.
His camera was a diary and his closest confidant. In the hundreds of hours of footage, Hoon
meticulously documented his life - his family, his creative process, his television, his band’s
rise to fame and his struggle with addiction. He filmed his daughter’s birth, and archived
the politics and culture of the 90’s, an era right before the internet changed the world.
Created with his own footage, voice and music, this intimate autobiography is a prescient
exploration of experience and memory in the age of video. It is also Shannon Hoon’s last
work, completed 23 years after his death.
Directed by Danny Clinch, Taryn Gould, Colleen Hennessy, and Shannon Hoon
In Theaters & Virtual Cinemas June 26th.

Not underrated. Just overshadowed. Damn near every band from that era was exploding. Mouth full of cavities is still my second favorite. Change is #1. ?mark was for Cobain. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GsGckJvzgjQ.html

I'm an autistic man and I've always dreamed about being a rockstar. The time for that to happen in my life has come and gone and I've realized as I've gotten older, and I'm 43 now, that it's been a blessing that nothing ever really came of my talent. I think that even a smaller amount of success than what Shannon experienced would have been difficult for me. One of the things that Shannon realized before he died was that even after chasing his dreams all of his life making it didn't fix what was wrong inside of him. Only doing the hard work with a lot of reflection and therapy can fix those things. I'm the kind of person that can feel very isolated and lonely and the lifestyle that you have to go through as a rock and roll star would magnify those feelings. I wish that Shannon could have known these things before he died. It might have saved him a lot of trouble.

I really liked this documentary. Keep in mind, it's a story told through a series of random recordings. There is no narration, no dramatic plot structure. I say this because I've seen some people complain that "there's no story". There absolutely is a story; a very compelling one. It's just not scripted. I was a huge fan of Blind Melon in my high school years. I saw them twice live: Once at UCLA October 21, 1993 with Lenny Kravitz, and second at the now released show at The Palace on October 11, 1995, shortly before his death. We got posters at the show and I remember my mom joking "save them in case he dies", hah (I lost the poster in a flood, sadly). I cried at the news of his death. What made it worse is how poorly he was treated in the press, compared to other frontmen who tragically passed. I'm glad that all these years later, there's a bit more kindness and empathy for Shannon, as well as their follow-up album.

I'm so torn to watch this. Blind Melon represents a time in my life where I lived a lot of what lead to his end. I think back to those days as the most fun I ever had, and will likely ever have again. I am lucky to have made it through and not in prison or dead, that's no exaggeration. I'm in my 40's now with my own business, house in the burbs, wife and beautiful young daughter. Yet I still feel a void today of not having those feelings or experiences in my life anymore. Not just the drugs, but just the times, lifestyle friends. The creativity. The, I can't explain what. That and some other directly related changes taking place in my life right now. Honestly, I'm scared if I watch this it will lead me back down that road. I'm afraid I'll dwell on those days again and end up trying to relive them. Or come to the realization that I never could relive them, and skip right to the depression stage that followed as I left those days in the late 90's to recover. The hands down worst years of my life that i'm also lucky to have made it through alive. Not sure I would make it through again. Yes, Blind Melon has that much influential power over me. Why am I standing on the tracks, watching the train come, and not sure what to do?

Heaven started to sound a whole lot better when you arrived, but we do miss you. Rest In Peace, Shannon Hoon ♥️ *Edit: I was lucky enough to be at the premiere of this film at TriBeCa last April and this film is not just a cry your eyes out film. It’s breathtakingly beautiful and uplifting and bittersweet, but it’s edited and made so so well. He really captured so much and had a great eye for cinematography. Some stellar shots in here-it’s not a ‘drugs and rock & roll’ cliche. It goes far beyond that and I hope the world gets to see it. Crazy to think about the early 90’s-documenting another crazy period of time. This film takes your breath away, right up to the final frame. 💔

falconater68 they had hundreds of hours of tape. Hundreds. He filmed EVERYTHING. Couldn’t show it all and the movie is a true portrayal of a life as seen literally through his lens. The good, the bad and the ugly. The ugly is what took him away..the decade was turbulent af. It was not a work of fiction. True life is not always uplifting yet it was an honest portrayal of an honest life. ♥️

Shannon Hoon was vlogging before vlogging. What a fantastic way to bring some closure to your only child's life who lost her father when only a baby to get a glimpse of her Rock star Daddy's life before and as it was happening. I wonder what age Nico Blue was when her mother finally let her see the 200 plus hours of tapes Shannon left behind. Now we the public get to see a condensed version of it.

I am going to cry like a little baby watching this. I'm ok with that. Being from Lafayette, Indiana, I was able to meet a few people that were close to Shannon at some point in his short life. Knowing that I will be able to watch this, finally, is a bit like closure. Mama Nel has lost so many people in her life, this will hopefully be the film that she always hoped it could be!

That’s kind of amazing that you’re from Lafayette. I saw the film at the premiere at Tribeca last year and before it was screened they brought it down for the family members to view before anyone. Mama Nel decided not to watch it. I think it was just too much. His daughter, Lisa and I think his sister (?) came. I do hope mama Nel decides to watch it but it’s a lot. Would be great if they showed it in Lafayette!! (Especially before this craziness started)-best to you-they show the town in the beginning a bit. ☀️

I first heard about Hoon when he sang on the Use Your Illusion albums, and it was his vocals that made "Don't Cry". Next thing I know he's got his own band and is doing well, and then he passed. I was shocked. He was still getting into his own and he passed before we got the chance to see where he would take it. I still have the cd single of No Rain (his falsetto is beautiful); I listen to Sigur Ros and the vocals on some of their songs remind me of him.

I just downloaded this movie a day or two ago. I did not know that he OD'd here in New Orleans, and it's also weird that I downloaded it either the day or day before he died, 8 years ago, yesterday. He missed the "27 club" by one year, as he died at the young age of 28, another one of rock's greatest tragedies. I'm watching this movie right now, but put it on pause to share a comment about Shannon Hoon. I hope that his departure from this world serves a message to all musicians and everyone else. Where did you get that they were close?.. I don't think they had that kind of friendship especially considering that both dudes had their own shit to deal with amongst their own band mates and close members of their family. I've seen pictures of those two together but then again I've seen a picture of Kurt Cobain with Flea, doesn't mean they were close friends.

Just finished watching, this is incredible! Its all Shannon- filmed with his camera by him or anyone he gave his camera to to record him, no fluff/filler, no narrator. What’s truly sad about his death is (and ppl can say he was depressed, gone, or whatever) it was a complete accident (I know ODs are considered “accidents”, but still). Even on the day he died he was talking about not wanting to miss his daughter’s first words. It’s evident from watching this that Shannon wanted kids wayyy before his girlfriend was even pregnant. But, thank you Shannon for recording this span of your life (rest easy) and thank you Oscilloscope for making this available for us to watch 🙏🏼 side note: there are many, but one of the stand out parts (because I, and I’m pretty sure a lot of other ppl can relate to this) was when he was talking about watching Neil Young perform “helpless” and he cried because it felt like Neil was healing him, relating that to seeing someone perform and everything is perfect that you get so emotional that it brings you to tears... Layne Staley does that for me. There are many songs of Alice In Chains that make me cry, “Man In The Box” is not one of them. That was until last year I came across a version of it with only isolated vocals of Layne.. Man you can hear everything his voice does and exactly how perfect it is, I started crying. The perfection totally overwhelmed me. That along with the fact that it feels like I’m being healed when I listen to his voice was just, wow. I know that’s random for this post but I completely understood what he was saying. Like that made me look at “perfect” differently when it comes to music.

So glad I got to seem them in their heyday. They were a very very under rated band that came out during an all time high water mark for good music. 90-95 was better than the late 60s in my opinion as far as exploration and freedom of expression in both music and society. Does anyone know if a full version of the piano/slow version of No Rain in the second half of this trailer is available to listen to anywhere or who made it?
@tonzo1129
@tonzo1129 4 года назад
I think it’s a special version made for the documentary, but if you put the playback speed to .75 on any piano cover of no rain it sounds very similar
