All Inclusive Resort in Puerto Vallarta: Is it Worth it?

Should you book an all inclusive resort in Puerto Vallarta or should you book an Airbnb or hotel in town? Let's find out! Throughout our travels in Mexico we have found that some cities are better suited for staying at an all inclusive resort than others. For example; if you are going to Cabo- we believe that staying in a resort is your best option. We found the food and drink options in Cabo to be VERY expensive so you're money doesn't go very far if you decide to "save" money on a hotel or Airbnb. On the other hand; Mazatlán is a great place to stay at a hotel or airbnb in town. The food is very reasonable, there is a ton to see around town, and you'll just have more fun outside of the resort in Mazatlan. So what should you do in Puerto Vallarta? You'll have to watch to find out! 😜

I agree with la guera. One of the great things to do is to go out on the town and find new places to eat and after dinner walk to the malecon and have a crepe. 👍👍

great video, I guess it depends on the kind of vacation you want. I think the next time we go to PV we might stay a few days in an all-inclusive and the rest of the time in town in a condo. I don't think all inclusives are supposed to be better value, but take the thinking out of the trip for you, for a super huge premium. on our last trip we rented a condo through pvrpv in emiliano zapata and it was really great. Being able to go to the local abarrotes for quick things and the market for the rest is a fantastic way to live like a local. eating at the local taco stands as well. oh, and the dogs barking, roosters crowing and parties to 4am, just part of the local flavor :)

In mexico we love to have our kids around most of the time. Specially when we are having fun or celebrating anything. That is why Latino kids look and are more happy and confident than other kids because they are loved and protected and also better diciplined. They also have more respect for the parents. Much more diferent than usa kids.

We like the all-inclusive option in Vallarta with a big group. It is easy to meet and have breakfast, then lounge by the pool for a bit before walking into town for shopping and dinner. Don't miss the malecon.

As a frequent visitor in PV, I even avoid hotels altogether. There are excellent Airbnbs near everything. Food is cheap, especially the taco stands. Breakfast, for the most part, is actually the cheapest meal of the day. Other meals, it all depends where you want to go. You can go cheap and you can go luxurious. There are places that are tourist traps and, not worth it. That was my experience at a restaurant that was on top of the hill with views of Vallarta. Expensive and, the food was hideous. You even got charged just for going up there but, they credited whatever you paid in admission towards your food but, not worth it. Whereas you may not like to cook, it is good to have the opportunity to relax and try to cook something at the condo. You can also buy your own drink and make your margaritas or your favorite drinks while enjoying the views of your beachfront condo. Done it and love it!

I have been going to PV for 25 years and stayed at most of the all inclusives. I agree with you, downtown is better. One of the things I dislike about the resorts is that you are isolated from true Mx. The food down town is better than the resort buffets, no question. Also if you don't like the food at a place down town then you don't have to go back.

This past October, me and my roommate stayed in a vacation rental in the Grand Venetian in PV and LOVED it. Minus the Whitney Huston blaring at all hours of the night. Any time and anywhere we travel, we always love to live like a temporary local. We go exploring, eat local food, shop at local stores and make connections with the locals around us. I have only ever stayed in a hotel 1x in my adult life (so far). I have never done the all inclusive resort as of yet, but I would like to one day. Same with cruises...never done one, but they do appeal to me.

I personally prefer hotel or Airbnb. Every time I go on vacation I learn something new. Inclusive resorts take that adventuress side away , cause everything is being take care of. If I’m going to hangout just in the resort might as well stay near my house, avoid airport travel.

We just got back from PV this week and my kids were heartbroken they didn’t see you two. I tried to ease them into reality by telling them even though we explored town half of the days, the odds you’d be hanging RIGHT where we were, or happened to be at the hotel zone were grim...little did we know it just took a power outage 🙃 We stayed next door at the Villa Del Palmar and opted out of AI. I loved eating our way through the city. A little less money, maybe even about the same, but I will say that as a parent with kids having food and drink brought to you without the chore of getting lunch or going a la carte at the resort would have been a good option. Next time I’d do AI for that reason and still explore to get some dope street food. Thanks for all the info and punnies!

So glad I was able to travel to Cancun and Cabo several times in early 90s before they where ruined. I remember going to dwtn Cancun and having breakfast or eating at mom and pop restaurant as they delivered the fresh fish. Those where the good old days. PV seams to be the one place that’s been able to remain somewhat un spoiled by the mighty buck. Guy you should check out Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa. That’s more of a Mexican spot but was one of my favorites.

Ok kids, you asked! Going to an all inclusive resort is like being on a cruise ship. I agree 100%. PV is maybe the most colorful beach town in Mexico. It also has maybe the best food offer in al beach cities. Unless you are in Nuevo Vallarta, you should experience full PV. You can stay in a resort but go out for walk in the afternoon and ofcourse eat outside.

All Inclusive Resort is nice but you're in a restricted zone, I guess safety wise its a great thing but for starters PV is that coastal city with the provincial flair, interacting with the locals, going to the beach, the malecon, even hiking the nearby mountains. But wherever our Güeritos go, they go in style and good taste! :)
@chriscomer2857
@chriscomer2857 5 лет назад
We've done both. Much easier if you're going with kids. Enjoyed exploring all the fabulous restaurants that PV has to offer but the all-inclusive definitely came in handy for the kids.

Best stay I had was hotel Rio Malecon Puerto-Vallarta, one block off beach, walk to everything. Nice little restaurant next door Una Familia was my staple favorite. Before this I had stayed at all inclusive on both coasts but didn’t venture out to see the people much or learn the language or culture. That being said ,all inclusive, being papered eating and drinking as much as you want is great every once and a while is not bad.

When traveling to Mexico we stay at resorts. We are those people who travel with kids! I know you hate them but they are humans who deserve a nice trip away from home as well. We like resorts for the very fact that you don’t have to plan in advance. That being said, we always leave the resort and go in town to eat, shop and explore. We take excursions and do so many things outside the resort but have the comfort of the resort to rerun to where I as a mother do not have to think about entertainment and feeding kids when I am exhausted from a day of exploring. My point is, if you travel as a family, staying at a resort is great but never waste the opportunity to explore the region you traveled to.

Yeah, at the extreme most I might pay $3000 MXN for hotel and all the food I could want and that is about the same price as the all-inclusive where you were so if I were going to pay $150 per night, it might be worth it, but that’s not usually the way I roll. There’s nothing like treating yourself once in a while though!! Great video otra vez!! Saludos desde Cuernavaca!!

The magic of Mexico is the reason why many rich or famous people go under any pretext. Everything is under one roof! You can be staying in a luxurious hotel and be at the level of your business. But as soon as you finish it. you just open the street door and you are at the level of adventure and taste. That you can only find in the streets. Mexico. It reminds me of the tv series of the island of fantasy. There. you will only live the adventure you have always wanted

The resort location in PV is important. Sunscape is located in an area with tons of local food options nearby. But, I stayed at Garza Blanca/Mousai earlier this year and outside food options were far less. I had to ride the bus down the hill to town and back a lot. 🤓

The all inclusives have 2 big advantages. They include the air and pools. If your bnb doesn't have a pool you are stuck with the murky ocean, often rocky beaches, and heavy surf. Also the air can be quite expensive depending on your dates so sometimes you are better booking a cheap all inclusive to get the air and then you can venture out. You can eat and drink cheap in PV because its a real city not a town or a contrived tourist area.

When in Playa Del Carmen definitely stay in town. So fun and so walkable. I felt sorry for people in the all inclusives as they seemed so so far removed from the culture. We stay at an adults only boutique hotel that is close to buses, 5th, Cozumel ferry, nightclubs and local craft fairs. We were taught how to play a Mayan board game at the craft fair and now play by the pool in the evenings after a long day. Everyone wants something different from a vacation, but if cultural experience is what you are seeking you HAVE to pass on the All Inclusives. Just my thought. We have been to Playa, Tulum, and Cozumel more than 10 times, our home away from home. Looking forward to our 29th anniversary trip in May 2020. Tijuana started our love of Mexico as we met in San Diego and use to cross the border on our way to Baja. Love your videos!

I live in Vallarta half the year and there are so many great restaurants to experience. I would never stay in an all inclusive, where you eat at the same restaurants every day, sit by the same pool, see the same people and never leave the resort, and think you have seen Mexico. You might well have just stayed in your back yard, ate Taco Bell, have a few Coronas and save the money

It is so much more interesting and cheaper to stay at an Airbnb in town and eat at one of the many great eating establishments, being involved with the people of the town and exploring. An all-inclusive usually being with tourists 100% of the time. May as well stay home and go to a local hotel.

Honestly, I don't see the point of these "all-inclusive" resorts. If you're going all this way jsut to stay in the hotel the entire time, what the hell is the point?? You could stay at home for practically the same experience!! When I went to Quito in Ecuador for 13 days, I stayed in a little hostel in the historic center. I went on day trips and walked the city everyday. I met a lot of people and walked the city with them. I bought food off the street and rode on the city buses. It felt like I became a part of the city. A resort like these are cities all on their own. Like an extension of America. When I go to Mexico, I'm GOING to Mexico, not disappearing into one of the resorts.

Hola Kennons! I have a question. Which hôtel do you think is appealing that is in the zona romantica area after you cross the bridge? One that is centrally. Located and near the beach and the great restaurants.around bisilio?. I want to go this winter

What's with the cloth wrapped on your hand Gregg? Did you get a wound on your hand? Did you get in a fight? Hope it gets better soon.

So, you're saying it's better to stay in town as you slowly and reluctantly walk towards the exit of an all-inclusive resort. Ok, got it......✌

Totally agree with you. It's the same here in Cozumel. Staying at an AI way south of town could be like staying anywhere in the Caribbean - not Mexico. Cancun hotel zone is just that. For a better experience - stay in Playa del Carmen. The town is right on the beach and there are tons of places to eat and drink. On the beach, on famous 5th Avenue or more local places just a few blocks off the beaten path. Also staying right in town in Cozumel is beautiful and not as crowded (except when the cruise ships are here). I am planning to come to PV in January. Any recommendations of where to stay?
