NWA World Heavyweight Championship match Ric Flair (champion) vs. Harley Race (challenger) February 28, 1982 The Omni, Atlanta, Ga. Complete match as aired on Japan TV, no English commentary.
Harley Race perfectly embodied the 60s ethic of what a man was . A man always meadured him self by how tough he was , how orthodox he was , how patriotic and Christian he was . A man drank , smoked , and fought . They drove faster , shot guns better , and served their country . By the eighties young men did not want to be that guy . They wanted to measure themselves by how good they were with women and how much status symbols they had. Greed was good and they were speptical of their country after Viet Nam . The Gulf between the two shools of manliness can easily be seen in the Race vs Flair wars . It can be seen in the movies too . Gone were John Wayne and Lee Marvin style actors and in were young and fit stars like Eadtwood and Stallone .
@@pooddescrewch8718 I recommend that you watch a) the good the bad and the ugly, b) Dirty Harry, c) Heartbreak Ridge, d) Million Dollar Baby. Clint Eastwood has been old school badass his entire career.
All Japan Pro Wrestling put up great cards and featured the best talent from all over the world. Why? Because its boss was Shohei "Giant" Baba, a man who knew how to build relationships with other promoters, TV people, and wrestlers. He was old school, and it worked.
This match is one of the better Flair vs Race matches I've seen. I think it's better than Starcade '83. This is how wrestling was and how it should be today. Any early 70's Flair matches up your sleeve? I'd love to see those, thanks for posting!
Their Starrcade match really wasn't that good, just the main event of a historic event. The TV match the two had when they did the Flair injury/bounty was a really good one as well.
This was nuts! Refs getting beaten by both wrestlers! I love how the guys came from the locker room to break it up but ended up watching Flair and Race beat each other some more. 😄
Nevet seen a wrestler take so many headbutts flair really took a brutal beaten how flair was standing after all those blows to the head still shows me how tough these men were
Ric Flair realized this isn’t Greensboro. Jack and Jerry Brisco are shareholders as well. Great to see Race have the crowd with him. He felt he was in KC!

Race would eventually regain the NWA World title from Flair, but not on this match. That Indian Deathlock that Race used on Flair, it's almost never applied anymore by any of today's wrestlers.
yeah the only other person I saw use it with ANY regularity was ron fuller!! not sure why it wasn't used more to be honest it LOOKS to be more effective than the figure 4!!!!! lol
Oh I agree, it sure is. It can and would tear tendons and ligaments just like the Figure Four but whereas the Figure Four debilitates six different areas of the leg and knee. The Indian Death Lock if applied right could also debilitate those areas as well but with one added area, it could sever the meniscus. Taking the stability of the knee cap away and actually crippling a wrestler. That's why it was one best "Hooks" in the business.
Back when Flair was still carrying 20 extra pounds on his frame and Race was carrying 15 extra pounds on his Head :-D. Edit : oh, and what is a "Driving Head Brutt-Oh" .???
This was wrestling culture clash . Harley Race represented a time when whatever outsidethe ring personality you had must seem legitimate and how you looked had better also seem legitimate and your grasp of performance unquestioned . Ric Flair was a symptom of changing crowd makeup . Young males having grown up more comfortably and safer wanting to see live " movie style " combat were making up the newest and most spend thrift fans . Style over substance was just begining to be true . You had to be able to work the old style but you had to have a larger than lifw persona to sell too . Flair is not half the performer that Race was but he was relatively young , well built , handsome and flashing his wealth . People respected Race no doubt , but the average faneither wanted to be Flair or be with him . It shows a shift in the crowd .
