One moment and line that will stick with me is after all is said and done and Oersted regains his sanity "Are these my hands, stained black with blood and sin?" The fact that even after all the evil he committed as the Dark Lord, his morals were still alive and hit him like a tidal wave when he was freed.

There's also a theory that Odio is a time demon who planned Oersted's downfall so he can possess him (which was semi-confirmed in Octopath Traveler, but then again the collab is non canon). OTOH, I like the theory that Oersted himself is taking responsability of all the crimes that he did as Odio, making clear that both are the same people.

I actually loved that Oersted only spoke in combat. Because one of his most used lines is “FOR LUCRECE!!” Even after being framed, banished, and reviled he still fought for them. Had he been able to rescue The Princess, perhaps a different end there would be.

So Josh didn't cover what happens if you decide to pick Oerstead for the Final Chapter, but his Fallen Heroes video pretty much already explains it. Both endings from his route (or as I call it the Odio route) involve either total wipeout of the universe (this also happens if you lose during the Odio boss fights in the heroes route), or just letting the world fall to despair by just defeating all of the heroes. If you get the former, the music itself will gradually die out into somber wind as you're left with nothing but a black screen and credits, you get the latter and you watch Oersted wander the kingdom he destroyed, now just feeling empty. Oersted never wins in his endings. The only good-ish ending for him is to kill his own demon and then die. That's it

I know that Akira's character, at first, was unlikeable, but we need to consider some things. Matsu explained that the Near Future Japan has military grade weapons that were spreading on the streets, basically a warzone out there. Akira's an orphan who sees his father died, and his sister was ill, all the while a cult were putting the country, quite possible all life on Near Future Earth in jeopardy to resurrect a dark god, just for their transhumanistic utopianism, the idea that being turned into soup would bring a world without discord and strife. He did get better, but let's be honest; If we are in the boy's shoes, we'd be pretty on edge too.

Yeah whenever characters have seriously understandable back story like that AND they aren't NEARLY that bad, I tend to question people who just jump on hate bandwagons. It always comes across as a shallow uneducated response imho. You should always give a character time to develop before deciding whether or not they are garbage permanently.

Twilight of Edo Japan is decent if you don't go out of your way for a pacifist run...but its still a fairly simple story with enemies that are incredibly tough early on and the villains despite being built up early on don't get a lot to do before you kill them. Odeo is a pretty good villain though and, as you said, his boss form is cool. Oboromaru is also a really...laclusteer character. he talks less than SUNDOWN and his personality is really undefined.

Sundown actually had a backstory of sorts. The reasons for the bounty on him, was because he was the one who placed it on himself. And why was because Sundown felt like a failure after failing to save his hometown and possibly his family, when bandits destroyed it. And also, he saw Mad Dog not as an annoyance, but rather a friend of sorts.

All right let's see how you like the chapters of this great game: 9. Yeah I expected this. Guide dang it! 8. Another unsurprising spot but he was my choice for hero in the final chapter. 7. I'd probably place this prehistoric spot here too... probably because of my first chapter choice which we'll get to 6. QG really liked this guy... me... he's okay... 5. And here we have the replayable chapter. Me I'm a character guy so Yuin was my shifu. 4. Meh... in order to get the payoff you have to wade through a bunch of mediocre 3. So the first spoiler came before the far future chapter. Interesting choice. 2. Now this was my first chapter. Great story, interesting twists but only one fight. 1. The only choice for number one and the remake did it a ton of favors.

I'm glad to see Akira ranked high. I consider it my favorite chapter (aside from the final chapter which I don't count) and I can't see why people would hate this chapter so much, it's impressive at least to me. It's a traditional turn-based RPG with a very non-traditional setting that I'd like to see more often, it's got a weird plot that uses many anime tropes to its advantage. It seriously combines campiness and humor with genuine horror and elements that are very disturbing if you think about them, and it does so spectacularly well. Kinda like Earthbound if it was a cyberpunk. The story wants to be ridiculous, but I personally find it absolutely cool, since the anime ridiculousness contrasts neatly with genuine horror. To many people it seems cliché and boring... but to me, it seems absolutely cool, not to mention, cyberpunk JRPGs (especially in the 90s when the original LAL came out, but even now) are very rare in general and I seriously wanna see one. Let's see, we have a turtle being liquified and turned into a robot, lawless streets filled with criminals, Akira being the "big brother" figure to a group of young orphans, mysterious disappearances, Doc Tobei who is fun personified with his odd antics and the weird psychically-powered robot which is honestly badass, then the orphanage ends up being burned to the ground by the Crusaders, with Akira's sister Kaori risking her life, and you infiltrate a lab to find out a government conspiracy with the help of an outlaw, whose backstory as the leader of the Crusaders whose followers lost their way was genuinely deep and engrossing. Also, seeing that Matsu murdered Akira's father is a very interesting trope subversion: you usually expect revenge and grief when a hero's father dies in a JRPG... unexpectedly, however, the killer has completely redeemed by now and has even saved your life. And that's not mentioning how Matsu dies: suicide by cocktail overdose that gives him psychic powers which he's unable to control... Yeah, hilarious and utterly scary at the same time, if you think about it, he just gave his life to save Akira's because he's indebted to him, I seriously wanted to cry at that point. The moment I saw all of those liquified humans in the laboratory I was utterly shocked. The chapter's final section, with the villains' plans inspired by Evangelion, is genuinely scary and shocking in comparison to all the weirdness surrounding it, all the liquified humans being sacrificed to Odeo... I think the villain in this chapter (priest Unryu), for the little time he appears, is not at all a joke villain, but instead is a well-written villain who seriously has a point in doing his villainous acts (he wants to give humanity a god to be ruled by and have it all live in harmony, wanting men to stop fighting each other). Yeah, the Live A Live chapter which was intentionally meant to look like a bad anime ripoff managed to be an even better story than the Earthen Heart one or the Cube one which are meant to look scary (those two chapters are my second and third favorite respectively, very nearly a tie for the second place behind Akira's chapter). I seriously, unironically, find LAL's Akira chapter to be a great story and it baffles me that many people hate it. The central mechanic of the chapter, reading people's minds, was also incredibly cool.

About Sundown Kid, during the ending, when he leaves, the sheriff tells a story about another sheriff that was so skilled at doing his job that it kept attracting bandits to his town to try and make name for themselves by killing him, which resulted in his town getting nearly destroyed. After that he left and went missing. The sheriff realizes that this was, in fact, Sundown. I know you can't really call it "development" as it's only revealed at the end, but it's still an important piece of his backstory. Also, Mad Dog always gives you decent hints about who's more suited for each trap. About Twilight of Edo Japan - I agree that the pacifist route is absolute pain in the rear, but there's really no reason to follow it to the end. Just avoid who you can and fight who you can't. It's way more enjoyable that way. And the reward, as you've mentioned, is not really worth it.

The title refers to the black and tan uniforms that British prisoners wore, in the war to keep Ireland oppressed, due to having no proper British army uniforms available. Why British Prisoners? Because they simply lacked the man power at the time, due to their army being stretched thin by another war.

@gregowen9856
@gregowen9856 10 месяцев назад
Here’s my personal list 9. Present: What makes it the weakest chapter for me personally isn’t because of the length, it’s how tedious to get your opponent to use their signature moves to obtain them due to enemy just refusing to use it against you even if you’re in attack range due to rng picking the move you don’t want the enemy to use and it is even more frustrating in the og version due to lack of breathing room which makes getting all the moves without save scumming is next to impossible 8. Twilight of Edo Japan: To this chapter defense the neutral route is pretty harmless and the superboss is pretty fun, but that doesn’t save this chapter for being this flawed due to guide damn it on both pacifist and genocide route 7. The Wild West: My only complaint I have about the time limit is that it's more strict in the remake due to how slow you move compare to the og version but I still got everything ready just fine, mostly everything else about this chapter is what Josh mention 6. Near Future: This chapter is pulverizing indeed, that's cause the og version of this chapter has it worst. Akira was terrible in battle, the lack of the mini map makes story progressive a pain and the item refining was so tedious. This remake give this chapter a major upgrade that it become pretty awesome, Akira got a buff on his moves, you can skip the cutscene for refining which makes this way less tedious and of course the mini map that prevents you for getting lost 5. Prehistory: This is truly the best chapter to understand how battle works, the only grapes I have is that this chapter can be a bit of a grind 4. Distant Future: Has the best story so far it capture the Sci-fi theme effective, the reason why I can't rank this any higher is that it is one of the worst chapter to start off first and it can leave a bad first impression if you not in a right mind or expecting combat 3. Middle Age: The only issue I have is the backtracking but everything else is just amazing and definitely the most memorable chapter by far 2. Imperial China: God damn this chapter has a so much replayability, the story is amazing and getting to experiment with the different successor in a different playthrough is like a whole new package and I sure do not regret playing this chapter first 1. Final Chapter: Is that really a surprise at this point, having a group of protag to join forces to take down Odio or having a reverse boss rush in the evil side of the final chapter

THe wild west chapter suffers from its length i feel. you don't get enough fights in it (like MAYBE three or four depending on your choices), the gimmick lasts for the single encounter and once you do it you fight the chaper's final boss and boom its done. I feel it would've been a great chapter if it was more structured as you taking down members of the gang sporadically and saving a big final confrontation for the end. Maybe have SUndown be a bounty hunter instead of an outlaw on the run. As it stands its mostly notable for being wild west themed, a very rare theme for a JRPG.

My opinions about this video: 9: Like you, I clearly dislike the Twilight of Edo Japan Chapter. At least Oboromaru and Ryoma Sakamoto are cool characters. (In my first playthrough, I killed eight people) 8: I think that the Wild West Chapter is decent, at least storywise. While a bit short, I expected to be better. I guess I got lucky I fought O.Dio with only two goons. Also Mad Dog best rival. 7: In my opinion, the Prehistory Chapter is pretty simple, standard and fun. Not bad, just simple and fun. It’s also good to listen Megumi “Shinji” Ogata as Pogo. Zaki is okay as a rival, not as good as Mad Dog, but at least he’s not as awful as... Well, let’s continue. 6: The Present Chapter is pretty short, but at least it’s very fun because ot the fights. Even funnier is that Masaru’s voice actor is Tomokazu Seki aka Domon Kasshu from G Gundam. 5: The Imperial China Chapter is pretty much my favorite chapter for a lot of reasons. Story, Character Development, everything... It also reminds me of Kung Fu Panda... Especially when Hong is the student. (Note: I’ve chose Hong as the Earthen Heart Master in my first playthrough) 4: Near Future Chapter... I love this one for the same reasons as Imperial China Chapter. Akira and Matsu’s bro dynamics reminds me of Simon and Kamina from Gurren Lagann (ironic as GL came after Live a Live) and the final battle with Buriki Daion vs Odeo makes me smile. 3: Middle Ages Chapter lower than Distant Future Chapter!? You’re kidding me... The plot twist is the BEST THING of the game as a whole!! It’s a blasphemy to put the Middle Ages Chapter lower than a generic sci-fi horror story. OTOH... The second half of the story is a bit confusing, and Streibough is my least favorite rival. 2: I still can’t believe that the Distant Future Chapter gained the Silver Medal... Won over Imperial China, Near Future AND even the Middle Ages Chapter... But at least Cube is cute, and his dynamics with Kato makes me smile (albeit not as much as the other relationships) 1: I expected that, given that it is the Grand Finale of the game. (Fuck that Trial of Wisdom) Congratulations, joshscorcher! Can't wait to see your next Top 10 video!

I’ll say this about Twilight of Edo Japan - don’t stick around for any “blind pacifist” streams. Behind those basket-head guards at 4:07 are Ode’s eight personal bodyguards (4:47). They can only be spared… if you _haven’t_ already rescued and recruited The Prisoner by that point, so he can burst in and scare them away. So most players end up sabotaging their own efforts _well in advance,_ still thinking that playing it pacifist might amount to something.

I failed the Pacifist run but still thoroughly LOVED Twilight of Edo. Being able to avoid nonstop conflicts is fun and it gave me MGS vibes in a good way! And the fact that there are branching paths that encourage the replayability of it more than the other chapters? I ADORE that! Its weird idk if i was just, struggling throughout but the overall atmosphere and successes that I DID manage to accomplish left me feeling so positive it is my favorite chapter. And this is coming from someone that HAAATES backtracking!

As much as I enjoy how ambitious and open-ended Edo Japan is, I honestly wouldn’t reccomend anyone go for the pacifist route without a guide, which’s what I did. Thankfully, all it really does is give you a unique weapon and a slightly different ending, so you won’t really lose much if anything by doing Neutral. Also, despite having no combat until the end, Distant Future is goated and I’m certainly glad to see it so high.👌🏽

I find it interesting people reference Evangelion when it comes to the Near Future chapter considering the release date of both media: Live A Live's initial Japanese release: September 4, 1994 Episode 1 of Evangelion first airdate: October 4, 1995 Fair to say the similarities between the two is a coincidence. I also found another coincidental Evangelion connection in that Pogo shouting the Japanese word for "Love" at the end of the Prehistory chapter. The title of Evangelion's final episode is "The Beast that Shouted Love at the Heart of the World", in this case that beast being Pogo. Also the fact that Pogo is voiced by Megumi Ogata (Shinji Ikari's Japanese VA).

1. Near Future = what a great story, I love how OTT it was. I loved the setting the most out of all the storylines (the near future aesthetic really gets me). I loved the mindreading part of this too! 2. Distant Future = by far the best story, and most well written characters. The only issue was hardly any battling! But great mystery. 3. Wild West = this setting is so unusual for a JRPG! And I absolutely loved it as well as the characters once again but felt it was too short! 4. Middle Ages = breathtaking plot twists - turns from being everyday JRPG protagonist plot to something completely different. Loved it. 5. Imperial China = loved Shifu and the student stories, I loved how you could pick your own student and train them up. I think my only issue again was that it was too short! 6. Edo Japan = I love Oboromaru and I love the setting/story but I just think all the other stories blow me away more. 7. Prehistory = that battle theme though 😍 8. Present Day The only one I didn’t like was Present Day because it was barely a story (though I understand why they did it like that).

Well done list. I totally agree the Fuedal Japan chapter is the worst. Still if I have any argument it would be to put the Sci fi chapter at #1, because it felt the most cinematic and amazing to play. Quick question though. Someone told me the Octopath games were follow up titles for this, heavily inspired by it. What do you think?
@KrimsonKattYT
@KrimsonKattYT 10 месяцев назад
Octopath is similar yet at the same time very different. Octopath 1 is more so 8 smaller short stories that vaguely connect lore-wise in sidequests. There isn't really a "final chapter" in Octopath 1. Octopath 2 is a lot more interconnected with an actual final chapter that ties all the 8 stories together. The main strength of Octopath is IMO the combat, which is incredible and rivals SMT's press turn when it comes to turn based battle systems. The exploration in both games is also some of the best in the gnere with simple navigation but with a massive, open, interconnected map where you can go anywhere at any time as long as you can survive the enemies. Most of the stories in Octopath 1 are just kinda mid (minus the first half of Primrose's story and the second half of Alflyn's) but Octopath 2 has much better stories on average AND better combat and characters. Octopath 1 is a solid 8/10 mainly carried by the combat, but can get EXTREMELY grindy in the endgame grinding to beat the true final boss/superboss. Octopath 2 however is a 10/10 and easily GotY 2023, better than even ToTK. I highly recommend Octopath 2. Easily one of the best RPGs ever made. It's combat, exploration, and maybe even story blow Live A Live out of the water.
@sarafontanini7051
@sarafontanini7051 10 месяцев назад
it simialr in that it follows the individual stories of different characters with a finale that combiens them together. there are differences though. Also Octopath 2 intertwined the stories better than 1 (not even speaking about how great Live a Live did it)

Fantastic ranking. I really enjoyed it and the final chapter is my favourite as well. Also with Edo Japan you don't have to use the stealth and be a pacifist, genocide is an option to, that's what I did and enjoyed that chapter. Maze like castle was annoying though and the reward for the pacifist run was rubbish.

Here’s my opinion: Prehistoric: the most interesting, maybe it’s because I have a thing for cave girls…… Imperial China: neat story, neat mechanics, it cool Twilight of edo Japan: the worst one, barely any interesting story, convoluted stories. Only good thing is that it gave us Undertale Old west: Sundown is a badass Present day: my favorite Near future: criminally underrated, only thing holding it back is Akira being really weak. Distant future: my favorite story, but it was the weakest gameplay wise Medieval: it speaks for itself Final chapter: BEAUTIFUL, best story Ok so now it’s time for something personal… So during the month this game came out, I had a nasty falling out with two close friends. It was so bad I was this close to commuting suicide. I decided to hold back on it because I was highly anticipating this game. In other words, if it weren’t for this game, I might not be here today.

Funny story about Oboromaru's chapter that makes a Pacifist run kinda pointless? You can ALSO get a katana that is as strong, if not stronger than the one you get from a pacifist run... From an Extra Boss. Which you can use ASAP. Also, there's a giant fish extra boss which gives you a useful piece of gear... And while you COULD face it in Pacifist, the Mechamaru is NOT waterproof. And Josh... the Ghosts are monsters that are there because of Ode Iou's monster buddies, OF COURSE they can't count as human lives, we aren't in Undertale! So... TLDR? 1/ You can get one of the two strongest weapons earlier if you prefer going Neutral, giving the chance to hit hard BEFORE facing Ode Iou, 2/ A Piece of Gear from a Giant fish is better obtained WITHOUT waterlogging an automaton And 3/ OF COURSE GHOSTS AREN'T HUMAN. GAME CONTEXT.

I consider Oersted's chapter a bit overrated (it's still good, I consider it "Love and Hate Tier"), in the sense that the backtracking is real shit, it's easy to get lost when traveling around sometimes, especially the moment after Oersted kills the king (I've gotten lost a lot at that time, and that ruined the chapter for me in that in such an important moment, getting lost completely breaks the tension). Plus I feel the Iambic Pentameter a bit annoying. And it also seems to drag with the cutscenes being repeated. You said literally everything that in my opinion needed to be said about that chapter.

@theenderkirby

I would personally say the near future is the weakest for me I dunno it become too grindy for my liking, and while akira does have good character development his start left a bad impression for me. The gameplay is good but I feel kinda tired from the encounters after a while and I didn't really grind that much and the mech fight is neat but I wish it have more moves or it would take more damage cause I feel like for being the final section some difficulty should be added. The idea of reading ppl's mind is neat, but I felt is just adding an option of talking with the NPC kinda wish you could use it from long range or even have telepathy with it. I would give it credit I really love the ost as someone who enjoy jazz vibes alongeside peppy music it does hit right for me and the effect of the mind reading are gorgeous. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed it despite the issues I brought up, and I say why edo japan is the lowest for me is the combat is really good and once you know the locations is quite fun to go through compare to the near future which I say kinda feel tired for me in most cases

My experience with these levels: Prehistory: light hearted story with a dark twist, classic. Also, screw the mammoth king. Imperial China: I chose Yun Joe, he felt like the most natural pick to me. Edo japan: WHERE THE HELL DO I GO?! Wild west: pretty simple western story, but that yo mama joke was freaking fantastic! Present day: Megaman meets street fighter! ...oh wait they did that already. Near future: Digimon data squad, plus dragon ball, plus Evangelion, plus ultraman! It was glorious. Far future: Run, RUN DO YOU HEAR ME? RUUUUUN!!! Medieval age: a much better turn to the dark side story than anakin ever had! Dominion of hate: the finale to end all finales.

I'd say Far Future, Imperial CHina and Present Day are my fave chapters. Far Future has incredible characters, a unique protag who's extremely sweet and the ending is quite surprising with who survives and how they learn from the experience. Imperial CHina has again great characters, a fun premise that leads into its gimmick well and has a great villain. Present Day is a just a fun boss ruhs and,again, has a great villain. Fa Future and Imperial China play well into the game's stories and having either the Successor (i my case the girl) or Cube be your protag in the finale is I think the best choice. Near Future's alright, I love the anime theme but going baca nd forth everywhere in the early part DRAGS aand the fact we don't see how Akira saves himself is lame, plus I don't think I like Akira honestly. the finale of the chapter where you pilot the mech is awesome though. Also, Odio is perhaps one of the best JRPG villains ever. THIS is how you do a tragic, sympathetic villain.
