Thanks Niven. Interesting stuff. it's always fascinating to hear about other people "growing out" of modules or finding that certain ones just don't do what you thought they would. The more "complex" my own system becomes, the more I am finding this out!

I recently got the 'nano Quart' quad AD. It's only 12hp and has 4 AD's that have 3 time ranges and if not used they are LFO's. It pairs up beautifully with the Intellijel Quad VCA. That saves some space and works really well. I can recommend it.

Thanks, there were a lot of "exactly my thoughts", as well as "I didn't think of that" moments! Some comments/recommendations (also considering you seem to use a lot of OG Doepfer's modules): - as for "small VCAs", my fave is the A-130-2. Two VCAs in 4HP, each with CV and Gain knob and switchable between lin/exp/off (which effectively gives you a mute switch). - filters (and I know I'm repeating myself with this, but) #2 in my list is the A-124, with #1 going to the A-108. It's not for everyone due to its installation depth, but seeing you're using Doepfer cases that won't be a showstopper for you.

if you are using the beatstep pro to sequence the buchla, you can regain octave transposition by holding the sequence button of the sequence you’re using and using the octave -/+ buttons on the bsp. or add an octave switch like the alm beast’s chalkboard which is generally a useful module for buffered mults for pitch cv.

Very true and a great work around. To be it never feels quite as intimidate as the octave switches on the Doepfer oscillators though.

Nice video. For the octave switch point - you could use a precision adder octave switch module like the ALM003 or WMD volt 🙂

BLM Subharmonic Generator does some of what the Doepfer A-115 does but in only 4HP. The Doepfer wave folder can be interesting as a CV source given a triangle LFO, then sample and hold to have more interesting repeating sequences that can change dramatically. Rides In The Storm FEG is a small (4HP) loopable ADSR envelope generator and very affordable. Very nice to have an extra EG for controlling your filter parameters or you can use the inverted output to duck a voice. Takaab 2LPG v3 is two Low-pass gates in only 2HP. The tone switches can make the sound really dark which can be cool for some things. Really affordable module considering that it can replace a VCA and EG if you're looking for that plucky LPG sound.

@Niven: Great rundown, very thought provoking video as always! One note on the shades not making it to your main case: you can have a Cascade from Fonitronic, that has almost identical functionality but within 4 HP, which happens to be available in your main case ;)

Cool and informative run down. Only thing I'd say is that it isn't really Akemies that doesn't track properly, it's that BSP has a load of slew in it's voltage output so it doesn't always reach the required voltage before it Akemies received the trigger. This is an issue for modules that snapshot input voltages when the trigger is received.

Like your video mate, I like that you're not a modular knobhead. On another note, does the sequencer on the mother 32 not do your head in? I sold it for that very reason, which is a shame as it sounds lovely.

Interesting channel because we have very similar setups. Do you use Ableton CV tools? Specifically wondering if you have success sequencing Plaits with Ableton CV.

So I actually use my own modified version of a max for live device the Octogate by Stretta. Its modified so I can control the level of the gates it sends out via the used template on the Launch Control XL. Basically I use it send the midi from The 8 channels on the Beat Step Pro that don't have their own CV out back into the modular :)
