Outstanding! 👏 The performance was accomplished without backing tracks, accompaniments, mixers, and other enhancing accouterments. It was played with just the pure, raw, melodic sound of the tin whistle! Touché! 👍 The way it was meant to be! 👍 Happy whistling! 😊🎶

For some reason i often encounter the opposite phenomena, judging or belittling beginners or "worse" players, and i think it is pretty baffling, for sure. I wonder what's the source of it...

I just got a James Dominic PVC and I really like the tone. I'm still learning to make clean notes on the lower octave. If I don't get the low d note just right it can sound like a teeny tiny elk bugling. 😄

Howard can not be beaten in this price range. Large holes is a plus for me, not a con, for glides & half notes.

Hi Stephanie, you gave an accurate review of the dixon dx102. Indeed it's like a baby, it has to be warm and dry, but once those conditions are satisfied it's easy to play and gives a warm sound.

Dear Stephanie, I am a big fan of your site. Thank you very much for your tunes and parts. In France, it is very difficult to find a tin or low whistle shop. It is even more difficult to find tablatures for this musical instrument. I like tin whistle and I love Christmas season. Reason to mix the two for the upcoming holidays. What do you think of the song "One more sleep 'til Christmas" from the movie “The Muppets Christmas Carol”. I managed to convert most of it into tin whistle tablature. Excellent. I'm just about to get my first low D. Think it may be the Howard. I am 70 so I like the brass and low breath required. Hope I'm right. Thank you so much, excellent video.

I am very happy with my Howard tuneable low whistle. I love the breathy, haunting and southing sound of this Howard Whistle. It has a really good sensitive response to the way you play it. So „easy to play, hard to master“😀 Sometimes i just play it slowly to calm myself down and get lost in the breathy sounds…🤗

I always did like the Celtic carbon but I didn't think it was the most expensive of the bunch lol~ it does look good and the sound is nice~ The takahe is to my liking as well but it says the spacing is wide and so are the holes... Kind of~ I have smallish hands and my fingers aren't as meaty lol~

@@CutiepieTinWhistle An easy solution, is to take a wide board, drill holes every 5 cm, add a little glue, and push in a dowel rod. Then slip each whistle over the dowel rod. For high D use a 6 mm or 8mm dowel, and for low D, use a 12mm dowel. The wide board is for stability to keep it from falling backward or forward. You could also add a cross piece at each end. If you do not have the tools, I am sure a friend may be able to make one for you.

It looks like this video includes the TB003, the TB012, and the DX102. I didn’t see the TB022. The Dixon folks actually say it is the same as the TB012, just with the alternate head included in the package. Thanks!

It was a little large for me to be honest and I struggled to cover the holes at the time. It just meant I didn't play it best often, so thought it best it went to someone who would 😊

Thank you very much for this, extremely helpful. Quick question though, I see you have a few negatives for the Dixon tb003 and none for the tb012. From what info I can find online, the tb012 is just a tunable version of the tb003. Do they really play that much differently?

Hi, are you going to do a full review of your Dixon TB003? I've just bought one as my first low D whistle and I'm finding it tricky to play the low notes without squeaking. I saw your comment that it is a little temperamental and I'd like to know if you have any tips for getting it to behave :)

Yes I'll be reviewing it soon 😊 they are a little squeaky on the low notes, but the best service I can find is just stick with it. It just needs time to get used to, that's all. The more you play and become friends and get to know your whistle, the better you'll be able to play it! 😊

Stephanie, have you ever played a Chieftain V5? I have one and I absolutely love the sound; I find it to be very quiet and understated as compared to my MK Kelpie (which seems quite loud and boisterous by comparison, it reminds me of a saxophone lol). I feel like the V5 has a mysterious yet whimsical sound, and it also sounds kind of "airy" to me (yet the V5 has good air efficiency which is probably why it's quiet). I was wondering, could you recommend some whistles to me that I might enjoy which are similar to the V5 in this way? I'm looking for a quiet low D whistle with good air efficiency, among the other qualities I listed above. Which ones might I want to check out? I would be happy with my V5 except for the fact that the low E note has a very noticeable "buzz" which occurs far before it shifts into the second octave.

I used to have a Chieftain A whistle but I wasn't a huge fan - large holes, loud, needed a lot of air. I'm not sure what model it was though as I purchased second hand. Setanta might be worth a try perhaps? Or possibly Shearwater?

Interestingly enough the finger holes look slightly different between the non tunable and the tunable plastic Dixon (smaller 2nd and 3rd hole in the tunable one?). Is there any difference in how the two play?

Confirms my feeling that Dixons are not great I liked the Lir and the Carbony. If you run a little dilute washing up liquid through the windway of your aluminium whistle it will clog much less. It does wash away but you just re-apply it. Most recorder players know this trick but it works fine on whistles too.

Thanks Rob. I have a video on how to stop whistles clogging 😊 the techniques definitely work, though even with a lot of these tricks I find certain whistles clog a lot more quickly than others.

Yes there is. Adam Zsolt / Fahangado in Hungary makes beautiful and good sounding whistles from cherry wood. Non tuneable but wonderful as solo instruments.

Well done! I will have to point out though, none of the Dixon whistles listed as "session volume" actually have good volume for a session. You re gonna get drowned out by the other instruments if there's even a fiddle playing loudly (talking from experience).

@@CutiepieTinWhistle If we re talking Low D whistles (most high D should be fine unless they re deliberately low volume) , a session buddy of mine played an MK non-tunable Low D and it was heard just fine in a 10-people session, with accordion, fiddle, 2 guitars, etc. I'm getting a Chieftain Custom Low D, which i will also try to play in the same session, and it should be fine as well. You need to put A LOT of air in to get enough volume, but since my main instrument is the irish flute, that was never an issue.

I bought a ruru as my first low D and still find it virtually unplayable. Requires way too much air and the finger spacing is HUGE. Definitely do NOT recommend, especially for beginners. There are much better choices out there. Love my Howard and MK Pro!

The Lír doesn't really have any cons at all, it just might not be suitable for small hands, or those with breathing issues 😊 but the same can be said for most low D whistles...It's a wonderful low whistle!

I see you gave away your chieftain... It is the one I have, and while tuning is good and it doubles as a self defense weapons, the chief is too loud and the high notes require a ridiculous amount of pressure.

I had a Low A chieftain, I found the holes a bit large, so it didn't get much use unfortunately. Lovely sound though!
