One of the best modern Westerns (and maybe my favorite of all time), Tombstone boasted a phenomenal cast and a career-best performance from Val Kilmer. So why wasn't it a critical hit? I break down the story behind the story behind the OK Corral!

The worst thing to do when playing a bad guy is to play a bad guy - Michael Biehn Sums up so much of his methodology as an actor

Val Kilmer definitely deserved a lot of credit for his performance in this movie as Doc Holliday. But Michael Biehn as Johnny Ringo gave a great performance also that not enough people talk about.

@heatheraggus7501 It sucks because character actors rarely get noticed. You have a few exceptions like Daniel Day Lewis, Willem Dafoe, and Gary Oldman, but for the most part, it hardly ever happens.

One of the greatest unsung elements of this movie is the Foley work and the sound design. Holy crap. Not just the action of the revolvers but every little sound from poker chips to water splashes. It really gives the movie a visceral quality.

How Dan talked about his mom passing down her movie taste to him. It reminded me how I got into the film by my own mom the same way. She bought the VHS version, raved about Val Kilmer's performance and it being her favorite Western. When I was old enough I watched it. Bought the DVD then upgraded to Blu-Ray once it was available.

I saw this movie because Val Kilmer is in it. I loved it so much even though I don't usually like westerns. I really recommend watching movies because of some reason besides the plot/genre of the movie just so you find something new. Last year i watched all the academy award nominees and I found some very, very good movies that I would otherwise had never seen. I also like to watch movies by actor (like this one) because if the movie is bad (cough cough I Saw the Light from 2015) at least you have someone pretty/interesting (Tom Hiddleston) to watch and to make it less bad. Really, just pick your favourite actor/actress, randomly pick a title and watch it, it will 9 out of 10 times be worth it.

Also I've always felt that the rain pouring down on a bloodied Wyatt was the character's baptism and absolution and therefore fitting to be localized around him.

I want 2023 to see a 4K scan of this film with the theatrical film and a new reassembled longer cut. It only took 30 years.

Dan I gotta say, I got through about an hr of Tombstone. To the part where Kurt tells his wife they should get a room when she's drinking her medicine, after he spent some time with the other woman and their horses. And he's just like "nevermind forget about it" and the whole love story took me out so I just shut it off. It's one of my friends favorite films so I asked to borrow it. Seeing you say that it's a weakness of the film makes me feel better and validates my feelings about it. But you also makes me feel like I should give Tombstone another try.

You probably already know this, Dan, but just in case, there's a lesser-known movie called 3000 Miles to Graceland which stars both Wyatt Earps -- Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner -- as two Elvis impersonators. It's not especially good or anything, but I always think about it as a burying of the hatchet on what is probably an only-in-my-mind feud between the two actors. It's especially delightful because Kurt Russell also played Elvis in a biopic when he was younger AND he played the voice of Elvis in Forrest Gump! Anyway, just some weird trivia that I thought might interest you.

This is my second favorite western. I don’t have the same complaints as Dan, I think the love story added to the movie. Watched it a million times and never noticed the rain thing. I don’t notice those things in movies I like. My only complaint is the narration at the end; I could not care less that some actor cried at his funeral. I make sure to stop watching or change channel after we hear they stayed together and before the whole actor crying line. Take out the last one or two lines and the movie is perfect, otherwise it’s 99.98 out of 100.

I've always thought it was a weird way of taunting/insulting him - Doc is saying "C'mon, c'mon, shoot me." Kind of a 'you're not so bad' moment. It explains his "you're no daisy at all" comment - it's a call back to "you're a daisy if you do" during the OK Corral fight. A daisy can best Holliday, and Ringo couldn't do it.
