Fantastic video and just what I needed to convince myself I need a Rodecaster 😂. Just a quick one on your comments about having to adjust the volume on all 3 files in Final Cut. Couldn't you just copy and paste the attributes from the first file onto the other two?

I have always been pretty darn happy about the Rode microphones that I have purchased. My son has gotten good service from a "Podcaster"- looks like a Procaster with a built-in DAT and USB output, for his gaming rig. Anyway looks like that Rodecaster could go on my list. I like not having to fiddle the knobs too much. I am considering sharing some of my foolish experimental rigs with the world, could be good for laughs. 🎭

Great video - really informative. I agree with a LOT of what you offer, and learned the Studio Limiter function of my Zoom H6 might have saved me a bunch of time in editing a frequent and obnoxious laugh recently. I use the H6 with phone-in guests all the time, though. I use the earliest model of the iRig guitar interface with no problems at all. I've used several computer interfaces over the past dozen years or so, and definitely appreciate the compact size of the H6. I carry it everywhere. I can record an interview, interface with a Mevo/iPhone for video interviews, and use it as an interface to record radio voice work. Based on everything I've seen (including your video) I'd easily recommend the Rodecaster for simplicity and function over the laptop for anyone building a podcasting studio. (As long as they have audio editing software on a nearby computer.)

I just watched how to connect and record a phhone on zoom H6 and it's not as complicated as you think. All you need is a zoom mic head (I got mine included in a kit), a USB-C or lightening to 3.5 jack adapter, a 3.5 jack to 3.5 jack cable where one end goes to the adapter and into the phone and other end goes into 3.5 jack input on the mic head. Set a track which will be used for the phone and that is it. Don't turn on the speaker on the phone because phone will skip the connection with zoom H6. I don't have that usb-c adapter so I can't test it now, but if you do, just go and try.
@thecrazylipser
@thecrazylipser 4 года назад
Great video. I'll make sure to recommend it. I'm a music producer (Ableton) so post editing the vocals isn't a problem. My main concern is to get the set up in an ideal way for whomever is on the podcast to hear themselves properly through the headphones. The direct in. It seems like on the rodercaster it's super easy, there's headphones inputs, headphones outputs, knobs which I assume would react accordingly etc (but please correct me if I'm wrong). What if I wanted to individually control the volume of the "direct in" for someone on the ZOOM H6 to hear himself louder for example? Is that possible and if so - how hard is it to control?
@60CycleHumcast
@60CycleHumcast 4 года назад
i dont think you can adjust headphone mix per channel on the zoom h6, honestly when we podcasted with zoom we dont even wear headphones, we just watch the levels and trust the limiter. The rodecaster is much MUCH better suited for monitoring via headphones.
@thecrazylipser
@thecrazylipser 4 года назад
@@60CycleHumcast I appreciate your response. So with the Rodecaster each person on the podcast has their own individual volume knob to monitor themselves with the headphones on? If so - that"s super useful. If I were to use the ZOOM H6, with an Audio Interface + Headphone amp which splits to 4 outputs - would you recommend such set up in comparison? And does it even make sense to somehow connect it all? Thanks for taking the time btw, this stuff isn't easy to start with but good people like you guys are extremely helpful.
@60CycleHumcast
@60CycleHumcast 4 года назад
Yes there is a headphone monitor knob for each channel on the rodecaster, you could do that with the zoom and a headphone amp splitter, but then you have to power the splitter and honestly in my experience the headphone out on the zoom is kind of 'crispy' and hard to listen to for long periods, its more for reference than for monitoring. I think the headphone out isnt running through the pre amp or something. It would be a less expensive rig but I think the Rodecaser just does the podcast experience a lot better.

thanks for making this! I do have a question about the phone calls. How many people can join in on the call? I know you could problem do a group call and it would sum it up into one audio track, but what about sending each caller to a separate track?? Also, I see where Zoom has come out with a similar mixer for podcasting and wondering how they might compare? The pricepoint is little less on the Zoom.

While I agree that the Rodecaster is a fantastic (nearly) all-in-one device for podcasting, I do have to disagree regarding the use of a computer for recording. Professional studios record with computers. To imply that the probability of a crash is a certainty is not accurate. I think what's more accurate is that the possibility of a software crash is higher on a computer; however that's highly dependant on what software you use. I've been podcasting for over 11 years, and hardware crashes aren't a thing. However early on, software crashes absolutely were, though even they were very rare. Since switching to a better recording software, I've not had any issues. And because the software saves as it goes, hardware issues--should they occur--don't corrupt the file. Basically, if you want less headaches, you'll have to pay a little more. Good episode. Newer podcasters are always looking for tips on how to get started, and that Rodecaster, if they can afford it, is such a great solution to avoid a lot of the pains in the ass that you have to deal with when you're first starting out.
