Kris Keefer and his crew went up to the Pacific Northwest for the 2022 Honda CRF250R introduction. Keefer explains the differences to the much-anticipated, all-new model, including three of the main focus points the Honda development team had: durability, torque performance, and handling. Some differences such as a nine-plate clutch system in the 2022 model compared to an eight-plate system in the 2021 model helps increase durability, and a better cooling system (helped by a new water propeller and radiator louvers) help keep the air flowing better and helps keep the bike cooled better, especially in tough conditions. A different cam shaft, a different head, a different intake are also all supposed to increase the torque as Honda worked hard to stop the requests for more bottom end. There are also a handful of changes to the ergonomics of the bike, mostly the chassis feel. Then Keefer chats with his 15-year-old son, Aden, and photographer Dallas Dunn to get their first ride impressions. Check out their first day on the bike.

This 250 rips me and a mate bought one each and tested them out at a motocross track today for the first time. All I can say ..................... Smiles and grins all day .

As a vet rider who’s been on 450s for 10 years now it’s extremely difficult to put the ego aside and step back down to a 250 but I think it’s time to give it a shot.

It'll feel kinda like a 125 to you, but it handles even better and engine is smoother. I'm used to 450s, too, but when I tried a 250 I couldn't believe how I could throw it around and how well it turns. It was a lot of fun. Might even be faster on many tracks than the 450 because you can change direction so easily.

Thx guys , I’m 58 …lookin for a new bike ….red is sentimental to me , a 1981 125 ended my race career , blew up 2 weeks before 1st state round ….took me mths to save up to fix , season was done , never been fitter …now I’m old , but the itch is really bugging me , the bug never left , in 06 , bought a new crf450 , loved it in a straight line , but kept stalling in the tight stuff , not once was I able to restart the sucker …killed me ….sold it …haven’t raced since ….I’m hoping 3rd time I’ll get it right ….

Great review! It's nice to hear a mechanical style review, AND the no BS 15 year olds view! I'm always amazed at how many so called "Bike Reviews" are given by someone who's never held a wrench...let alone even knows where to find the water pump impeller. Thanks for doing your homework on this one Kris, Aden and Dallas!

Owned and raced an ‘03 CRF450r, back then, I loved it, today, at. 55, I love my ‘19 CRF250r. When it’s time for a top end, I’ll probably do a 270 kit, but have zero complaints as of now. I do JDay Off-road, NETRA, and some casual moto stuff with it, and it’s great in every discipline. I put an 18” rear (DUBYA wheels……..hey I needed spare wheels for the Northeast 24hr race) and a kickstand, it the rest is still straight from the crate and it rocks. Awesome review as usual Keefer. How long do the titanium valves last nowadays? It was an issue on the early CRFs.

@@mackeymichael I only have about 28 hrs on the bike, I also have my ‘95 CR250r I ride, so I split the time between them. Two clearance checks so far, and they are spot on. I don’t rev the piss out of it, I like short shifting, so it hasn’t been revved to the limiter Bam Bam style lol.

Great initial review. Would love to see more vets on 250’s like me! #orangebrigade 450’s pull me on the longer starts but then $h17 gets dangerous on the 3rd lap when they get tired and I’m trying to pass 🤣.

Had it for a while now and I’m liking map 1 better I believe.. didn’t notice less bottom end and much as I noticed more over rev on top and the tires I tried running 12.5 of front.. don’t do that huge mistake keep it 14lbs

he said the tires were 2lbs. lighter than the Dunlop's. is that 2lbs per tirue or for both. that's part of the 8lbs. weight lighter than 2021. if he meant 2lbs. per tire that 1/2 the weight savings just for changing brand of tires.

So when they put dunlops on there they will be 4lbs there. Or more and that aluminum frame is heavy feel.

Both tires saved two pounds. But I’m glad they made the change. I swear up and down by Pirelli tires. It hooks up sooo well. And it’s cheaper than a Dunlop. Better performance and cheaper cost. Can’t complain with that.

You’d be surprised! I bet you would notice a huge difference lol. I came off a 14 Yz250f to a 2020 yz250f and I noticed it instantly. My little brother still has a 14 yz250f and we switch bikes from time to time and I tell him to give me my bike back 😂

When are the Japanese going to figure out that the masses do not want perimeter frames???? No one has to ride motocross bikes in the woods now. From domination to irrelevant! No matter how much they win, I still wouldn't ride a Japanese bike if they gave it to me...
