I love that you guys go into ride quality. Even though it's a characteristic that buyers will experience every day, many reviewers ignore this aspect or just gloss over it quickly.
Don't disagree entirely but elephant in the room question...fold the 3rd row down like most will do on the essentially otherwise identical 90?... and still have the versatility of occasional extra accommodation for a slight weight penalty. Empty nesters ourselves but still enjoy the flexibility. Has anyone actually said more cargo room on the 70?
@@springertube That only works in Canada if you buy the lower trims of the CX-90. If you want all the extra features like the dual 12.3" screens you have to move to the higher trims and they have captain's chairs. If you fold down the third row, you have a 4-passenger vehicle, that doesn't work for many.
@@springertube thank you spring, but you are forgetting that that 'folded down 3rd row' takes up a HUGE amount of storage space. I stick to my original comment~ not everyone has a tribe of screaming children.
I bought a CX90 Turbo S Premium trim and I haven’t had any of the jerkiness with the transmission. It’s probably the smoothest transmission and engine I’ve ever owned. There was a software update that was probably done before I purchased but mine is very smooth.
@@th003g But the luxury inside and out looks several steps above the aforementioned Honda and VW imho. It's knocking at the door of the BMW and Audi equivalents.
@paulh6517 is it really though? The 3 row competition from Japan and Korea have more amenities. You will find that Mazda likes to wow you with certain touches, in this case the fabric lining the dash face. But they don't have luxury touches like 4 way lumbar, extending thigh cushions, premium headliner, roof or door mounted vents, multiple ways to access the infotainment etc which are hallmarks of a luxury crossover and are available in competing mainstream crossovers that offer more space and are shorter by up to a foot.
@@paulh6517 "luxury". The Mazda CX-90, which is the CX-70, has some of the most uncomfortable seats (they're too short/narrow/feel like cardboard); hollow chintzy interior plastics that belong in a late 00's early 10s GM product; and have very gruff/unrefined powertrains. The paint also chips and scratches easily since the paint is so damn thin.
Thank you for another great review. I love that you guys are so upfront and honest about the negatives you find in your review cars. I won’t buy a vehicle unless I’ve gotten your input on it first!
A few months ago was shopping for a smaller CUV after owning a CX9 for 7+ yrs. The CX-5 didn’t have a hybrid and the cargo capacity of that is in the smaller side. Looked at this CX-70 and PHEV is out of my price range while the base GS-L is near $50K. Found this to still be too big for a 2-row just like my CX9. Ended up going with a CRV Hybrid as that still kept the cargo capacity similar to this and my prev CX9 but with much better FE and easier to park as smaller than CX-70 or CX9!
Thank you Guys !!, Love the content and the interior looks nice. 700 Miles of range now that is pretty good distance to travel. Enjoy your stay and have great day.
If I recall correctly when Mazda announced the large platform series (CX60/70/80/90) it was envisioned that the CX60 and CX70 would be two rows, and the CX80 and CX90 would be three rows. The difference would be that the CX70 and CX90 would be wider versions of the CX60 and CX80 respectively. It appears that Mazda, for whatever reasons, strayed from that concept (perhaps to share more tooling between the CX70 and CX90). The question now is what, if anything, will Mazda offer in size between the CX5/CX50 and the CX70/90? Perhaps a North American version of the CX60 (maybe to replace the CX5)?
You lucky dogs!! I have the cx-50 Meridian Edition and luv it. The Mazda drive quality, in my opinion, in this sector and price can't be beat. Additionally, I can't stand cvt transmissions and Mazda offered a proven 6 speed--yes, 8 speed would be awesome. Zoom! Zoom!
Great review and information! Both vehicles are a good choice, but I'm torn between the sound of the high out V6 and the PHEV mileage and smooth Shifting 🤔 Great review guys 👍👍
I’m impressed. If I were looking for a non-3rd row mid-to-higher end proper sized SUV… you be crazy not to consider it. It certainly is more interesting than anything similar from Toyota and Honda (Highlander/Pilot). And by a far margin… the interior looks amazing. And the $50 plus price tag is… for lack of a better word… fair. Thanks for the video.
There is never going to be a perfect vehicle. To me, if space were my biggest concern… I’d probably look elsewhere. There certainly are bigger or more interior space vehicles (especially minivans). But I like the balance (size & space).
Love your review! The flow was really smooth & efficient, yet comprehensive. Thank you. I agree... the fact something like Apple CarPlay isn't standard in 2025 is kinda wild. Figure out Mazda Canada !!!
I love this lady's "lead" foot, lol. Brilliant review! I was leaning towards the inline-6, but now I think the Hybrid would be smoother for most of my driving needs.
Speaking of the looks alone: this is one GORGEOUS vehicle! My god it's good-looking, especially in this Mazda red. I sometimes missed what you were saying in parts of the video, because I'd be gawking at this beauty (e.g. 4:16 - 4:30 )
Leatherette?! In my day we used to call it vinyl. I'm sure that it's of much better quality than vinyl but I'd still rather have cloth seats if it ain't the real thing.
@@lilred1107 synthetic leatherettes and “vegan leathers” are incredibly polluting and do not last anywhere near as long real leather does. Definitely contributes to a throw away society... Garbage material that peels and looks like crap.
Love you kids! I'm just throwing this suggestion out there because I enjoy this RU-vidr immensely and she's hilarious and quirky. Her channel is called "Sarah-n-Tuned" and she does car reviews (I just watched her review the CX70 PHEV) but most of her content is restoring older cars which i thought Zach would enjoy. (She's currently restoring a 74 Toyota Celica but putting an 8 cyl in it out of her fathers wrecked Toyota Tundra.) She's so much fun to watch. Take care.
Took the CX90 out for a test drive and loved it. As I'm (thankfully) returning my leased tesla Y, I wanted something more versatile and comfortable (and not having to drive 2 hours to a Tesla dealership to get work done) and I narrowed it down to the Jeep Cherokee plug in, Highlander hybrid and this one. Looked at the Volvo, but on a value per dollar basis, have to say the Mazda line up is best
I'm still puzzled why Mazda released this car given that the only notable difference vs. CX-90 is the lack of third row. I'm wondering if they shouldn't have brought the CX-60 to North-America instead. The format of the CX-60 makes more sense for a 2 rows, in my opinion.
They renamed it the 70 due to how people search for cars online. It would have been too confusing to have a 90 with both options. The CX-60 will come to US as the new CX-5. It will be larger which is most CX-5 owners complaints
@@MarshallJames-dh3gi the 60 is definitely not replacing the CX-5. The 60 was specifically made for markets with smaller and more congested cities and roads. They aren’t going to bring a compact with an inline 6 to North America.
Super review as always. Just one question about transmission reliability: do you know if Mazda has worked out the reliability quirks regarding the trans?
Not having a 40/20/40 2nd row option is a shame. Currently drive CX-9, rarely use 3rd row, but a few times a month I do squeeze a third passenger between two car seats. Middle fold allows long items (Home depot, skies and etc). Very happy with my CX-9, but in the future will look at MDX or Pilot.
We were there 6 months ago... almost Empty nesters/ older teenagers, don't need 3rd row anymore. Looked at CX90 in anticipation of a the CX 70. couldn't belive the cost. We bought ended up with a used 2020 X5 40ki with 28K on it instead. almost $15K cheaper. $20K if you moved to hybrid. X5 is etter than this mazda 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. fast, comfy, heads-up, wireless carplay, heated rear seats, on and on. And the sound... grummmmble. awesome. Came with new brakes, new tires, 30K service done. Prob only thing I Wish it had a battery.
I’m disagreeing with the other commenters, but I just don’t see the existence of this being justified. It costs more than the CX-90, is the same size as the CX-90, performs the same as the CX-90, but lacks the 3rd row. There’s no maneuvering advantage, there’s no efficiency advantage, there isn’t even a real storage advantage with the CX-90’s third row folded flat. This car is still baffling. No doubt it’s a great car, but given the option, I’m choosing a CX-90.
It probably offers a bit more space as the seats, even folded, take up room. But I agree with you. This is a cx90 without a third row option, so…….offer that. All they did was save hundreds of millions of dollars in development cost by not making a slightly smaller, faster, better handling two-row model. This is a nice car, but a real cheap-out on Mazda’s part.
Well I was intrigued with the CX70 until I heard "no chrome" so being 76 and an old school car guy I'm back to considering the CX90. I do prefer the PHEV since we also have a 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV and love it with it's 32 miles of electric range. Wife drives it mostly locally and currently sitting at 76 mpg! She sometimes goes months before a fill up!
Great review! Looks great! I wonder if it’s best to wait for this model to evolve and improve over the years? The CX-50 is in its 2nd year and still has a lot of problems.. actually deterred me from buying it. I will wait for these models to improve. I bought a first year model 1 time will never do it again. 😊
I came to learn whether or not the back seats recline. YAYYYYY, they do. This has now moved back into the hunt. I really do wish that it was simply a full hybrid. For me, screw the PHEV its not worth a $9k premium. That the others are mild hybrid is barely worth mentioning as it seems like it does little beyond replacing a passel of belts, starters, alternators, etc. That's not a bad thing, but it's definitely not the "hybrid experience." Unfortunately, the purdy things are $10k+ more than the CX-50 trim that I'm looking at.
* * * I know you're canadian, but I would like to be objective in your response! I am looking to buy my wife the 2025 Lexus RX350 which, as you know it's manufactured in Canada. I am a Lexus guys for over 24 years with all vehicles made in Japan. I've been hearing a lot of complaints about the RX's made in Canada. This is why at this moment I am very much looking at the 2025 Mazda CX-70 made in Japan. A lot of differences: - 2.4 liter 4 cylinders vs. 3.3 liter 6 inline - 280 HP vs. 340 HP - 192 inch vs. 201 inch ..........................................................................What say you? * * *
if only you would go plug-in hybrid... RX450h+ is made in Japan, but, of course, is more $$$... agree, I ain't spending Lexus money for something made in Canada!
@@brandononbrand Appreciate the heads up. As you know very well...the plug-ins still have a lot of problems to deal with. I like to stick to standard gas no gimmicks...! ........But looks like ALL RX-es are made in Canada...!!! "The 2025 Lexus RX 450h is built in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada's (TMMC) plant. The RX has been manufactured at this plant since 2003"....NOT GOOD!
Mazda blew it.. Was saving for the CX-60.. Not this rebadged CX-90 MOM-Boat! Way too big for me - Now waiting for either redesigned 2025 CX-5 Hybrid or Rav4 Prime
Impressed by that the transmission in PHEV is somoother than one in inline 6. Pissed off by N/A for wireless smartphone connection in lower trims in 2024! Again, impressed by limitless kms for warranty in Canada.
That's what I said in CX-90 review, the electric motor and battery are too small in Inline 6. Overall PHEV is so much better. It's smoother, quieter, ride is more compliant and I have only filled up gas once since I got my car last August. Gas in Vancouver is so expensive.
@@davidgvgyvfgvgbnbh just checked spec, max speed in ev mode is 140km/h. Problem is there is a few seconds delay in ev mode for gas engine to kick in. Keep in normal mode and engine can kick in instantly when needed, much safer on highway
My question is why not introduce the slightly smaller version of it like cx-60 in EU? I wanted the new platform but don't need that much space, and cx-60 would fit perfectly being a bit bigger than our current cx-5.
To disable the start/stop feature requires multiple steps which is a pain when doing errands that involve several stops in the same day. If the seats are the same firmness as my CX-5 Signature that is also a negative aspect. I use a separate seat cushion but that prevents the use of heated and ventilated seats. Seems I will be looking elsewhere for my next car.
If you have any contact with Mazda, could you please request them to add a dark blue exterior/white interior option to all turbo models? Sucks that this awesome color combination isn't available for anything above the non turbo cx5. Especially here in Canada 😊. Black interiors just feel claustrophobic to some folks, but that's all we get here in Canada 😢. Thanks for the great videos 😎
Get a minivan if you have to haul more than 5 people. This is an ideal cargo carrier and good for camping, trips to the hardware store and other times when you need space. Nice to see Mazda adding hybrid options. I've had 3 Mazda that I really liked, but they had manual transmissions. When you switch to a hybrid bye bye manuals. These 8 and 10 speed transmissions now in use seem unnecessary. Six seems like plenty, less complicated and less hunting for the right gear.
I’m from California and it can get cold at times. It’s frustrating that heated steering wheels aren’t standard with heated seats. Hyundai group is the same. I don’t want to spend $1000s more on a higher trim just to get a heated steering wheel.
Wow, Zack got some sun, I think you two are following me as I’m pretty sure I saw you in the Del Mar Encinitas area, and now I’m in Palm Springs. I’m pretty sure you were here in the last 10 days. It was scorching hot and how about those windstorms, a bit sandy, huh?
Its nice but the 60 would have been better. Hope the new CX-5 for 2025 won't be changed too much except for the drive train . It still looks pretty nice and is their best seller.
A great video, as always. Looks like you are using HDR effects in the video, especially when sitting in the car. This looks unnatural, especially on your faces. Maybe tone down HDR effects, so it looks more natural.
I think that if Mazda is reallly serious about moving upmarket they need to smooth out the suspension and steering. Luxury is not heavy steering with hard seats and ride quality.
We'll be at the drive event, the walk around is for the US, there wasn't a Canadian event and we weren't included in the US event unfortunately. We would have loved to see it!
I will never understand buying this instead of the identical CX-90. Just fold the rear seat if you want a 2-row, but you will always have 3 rows instead of 2. All other car company calls this a trim, not a different model.
It doesn't really work that well with the CX-90 especially in Canada unless you buy the lower trims. The higher trims with the extra features get captain's chairs. If you fold down the third row, you have a 4-passenger vehicle, that doesn't work for everyone so the CX-70 would be a better on the higher trims.
Hi Zack and Andrea.... Longtime viewer since your Driving TV days. I'm seriously looking at the inline 6. But I recently saw a video from a mechanic that expressed concerns with the difficulty of accessing parts of the engine without removing the drivetrain. While I know the mechanics are not something you focus on, have you heard of anything similar? Thanks.

The 70 and 90 are great looking except from the back. Why no exposed exhaust? looks like a mini van from the back.
I hope you read my comment . I want you to do a video tell us the most beautiful car you will own for the rest of your life in every category ... big Suv or suv or sedan ... every type of all kind. That's will make us know the best car in every category. Thanks
Disappointing that they haven’t fully addressed the transmission issues. Would be neat if they offered a “black” edition CX-90 sort of like Hyundai does to replace all of the shiny chrome with the black chrome on the CX-70.
My 2021 CX 5 is also a bit jerky coming out of stop. But it's a reliable 6 speed. Besides, how often do you need to get out of a pinch between 0 and 10 MPH?
I just traded my 08 BMW 335i for a 25 Mazda CX-70. No issues with the transmission for me but I probably will not be driving it like the BMW. I was told by the Mazda Sales Manager that I can not get the CX-70 undercoated for rust protection due to it being a mild hybrid. Has anyone heard this also?
Mazda made a mistake putting 21” wheels on almost every model except the base. Put smaller wheels and make the larger wheels an option AND Mazda should black out the cx 90 AND release melting copper and zircon sand for the cx 90 PLEASE
agree... larger wheels should always be optional with every car!... that used to be the case, but it seems car makers are padding out their margins further by forcing these large wheels on us.
@@magnoliap5824 Agree...and that's what the Signia is coming with or they are advertising in their pre-release ads, which is unfortunate..... I hope they have a lesser option, and haven't put such large brakes that would preclude that.
It's disappointing when car manufacturers market a vehicle with minimal changes, such as the absence of a third row and slight exterior tweaks, as an entirely new model instead of just a new trim. This approach feels like a cash grab, aimed at selling essentially the same car without offering substantial improvements or innovations.
I test drove a gas model and it felt good, but I didn't like the tan interior. I preferer the black interior and not a fan of red. I love the fact that it can tow 5000lbs because I have a trailer.
seems like deisgn over function. Sat in the CX90 and for its size had less usage space, back seats, centre console space etc., than smaller competitors. See the Sorento and Accent for ex. 5:45 Thx Andrea - that makes sense why no 3rd row..
@@chriskelly509 Agreed. But honestly, beyond the size, I don't like the new direction of Mazda design. It's bulbous. I think the CX50 is a much better looking vehicle but no hybrid.
No heated steering wheel is a deal breaker for me and I live in US and up north. I love heated steering wheel and heated seats when its really cold. they keep you warm until your car can warm up and then put on the ventilated heat.
My 2012 Mazda cx9 had a catastrophic engine failure in 2019 with 100k miles. No warning, the engine block cracked by the timing belt and the antifreeze went into the engine. I had to basically dump my top of the line well taken care car because a new engine will cost about 10k at the time. After searching through the internet years later I learned about a class action law suit by people with very similar problem even with newer CX9s ,cx5 and cx7s . They claim Mazda was aware of the issue with the engine but refused to recognize their defect. I had several other recalls with other parts that were addressed by recalls but the engine failure still up in the air. My question is if they coverup the issues for so many years how can we trust Mazda going forward with their new unproven engines?. I rather take my chances with Toyota that halts production and sale of the Tundra and Lexus over engine trouble than Mazda who plays a filthy game with customers.
Much to recommend Mazda based on my experience of nine years with one. But the term high output, relative to my Volvo is underwhelming, compared to 455hp and 523 lb ft, and a 41 mile battery. Although this Mazda is beautifully styled.
I'd wait. I was a huge Mazda fan. I drove a Mazda 6 signature for 4 years and loved it, very satisfying. We live in a remote location and I promised my wife I'd get an AWD. So, I purchased a 2024 CX5 Signature. Very disappointed, the A pillars vibrate and rattle and the vehicle has a buzzing humming sound and later it has a whine that is most annoying to me. My Mazda 6 was very quiet and I heard no engine noises at all and that is why I purchased the CX5 with the same turbo engine...they are not the same engine. I bought a car that rattles and whines. I noticed the speakers in the CX50,70 and 90 are not in the A pillars...It's been back to the dealership twice with no positive results. I was hoping that the 6 would come back to N. America and I believe it will but not for a few years. I'm not a SUV fan....Yes, the CX5 is fun enough to drive and the interior is good not as good as the 6 but the rattles, buzzing and whines ruin the experience for me, I don't even like getting in the car and I don't want to get used to the noise...Please don't say turn up the music.
Why are there different trims between two countries that are so close together, geographically, economically, and culturally? You would think, as a cost saving measure, Mazda would just keep it simple.
It's unfortunate that the PHEV couldn't get above 50km of range so that in Canada it would qualifybfor the full EV rebates... Getting 10k off (including provincial rebates, depending on where you live) would make ot almost reasonably priced for what you get. Other similarly sized SUVs getting 10k off really makes this a tougher sell. Also, the charge times are VERY misleading. At 17.8kwh a standard 120V 12A charger (the max you cannlegally use on a 15A circuit), assuming that you always have at least 15% of the battery available to support hybrid mode means you need to get about 15kWh in to the battery, at 1500 watts or 1.5kw that's going to take 10 hours. Their spec sheet quotes the 6.5 hours at 15A (which requires a special 20A circuit) as going from 20 to 80 percent, but no one needs to know that in a PHEV and barely anyone will have existing 20A outdoor or garage plugs. It's better at 240V and 30A as they state 1.3 hours, but it's actually more like 2.1 (15 kwh divided by 7.2kw of power.) It's nice, and it might be worth a look, but the price is insanely high, needing premium gas, and comparison with other vehicles that get better rebates will make it hard to choose.
Need something to replace the Ford Edge with. Since Ford has discontinued it and has no mid-sized 2-row crossover ICE vehicle any longer, this might be the most logical replacement.
No CVT! I wish Mazda made a mid sized sedan like the Mazda 6. Remember when Mazda was going to have another division called Amati? It was supposed to be upscale.
Mazda should move the second row a little back to give more second row leg room. We need a spacious 2 row SUV. The cargo space now is a over-kill to me..
