I'm sure that's their excuse. But probably what it comes down to is that these vehicles are so much more advanced than the American equivalent.

***** Part of what made the rear-engine cars so appealing was how affordable they were. I think the U.S. really needs to see a successor to the old generation vans and a new rear-engine beetle.

***** VW has a market here in the US. People want well built German designed vehicles. While I would prefer the vehicles be made in Germany, I understand the costs would run high. Production here in the USA and Mexico solves that problem. Production in Mexico also means VW can manufacture for Central and South America.

gbriank1 Indeed its not selling as good as other Volkswagen models, but still much in comparison to other manufacturers. Well all manufacturers do this nowadays, e.g. all the X models from BMW are produced in the states, even the ones coming to Germany
