Here I show close up writing samples of several Jinhao nibs, including standard F and EF, as well as two of my favorite Montblanc Frankenpens that I call JinBlanc. I hope you enjoy. Do let me know your favorite one! Thanks for watching.
Great demo thanks. I have been writing with my new 9019’s for a few weeks now and it is fast becoming one of my favourite pens. May be the pen of the year in my opinion.
By sheer fluke and a Dremel drill I have messed up 2 perfectly good 9019 nibs from a pack of five. On the plus side I have also managed to make 2 nibs that simply defy belief. The softest , smoothest, most gorgeous fountain pens I have ever tried. All for approx £6, That said, I am hugely tempted by the Jin blanc game. Please God don't let me get drunk and get out the Dremel in that beauty 😂. Great vid as usual.
That is how it is done :) I am not a professional nib anything :) :D I just MA&FO [Mess-around and find out] Can't say I have not messed up a MB 149 nib, or two :) :) , but I have several that I have customized to the fineness that I like.
I wish every pen reviewer showed writing samples as close-up as you do it. I wish you wrote with some broader nibs. B. BB, and Music would be nice to see.
Thank you! I am in fountain pen game more for the writing experience than collecting them. Thus, I have ended up with a large collection---some of which need to go. I do have some broader nibs, like the Platinum 3776 coarse and Sailor Zoom nib. Maybe I'll do writing samples.
Fantastic video - thank you! I have recently bought the WS630 M in gold, WS630 MF in steel and 9019 in M. The gold nib is also a disappointment for me as it was scratchy and writes with an inconsistent line. I really like the Ws630 steel nib, but feed becomes oversaturated when writing (going to try to heat set even though plastic as cleaning and reseating has not made a difference) and needs to be wiped with a tissue to avoid ink getting everywhere. 9019 had been great - no issues straight out of the box … second on order already!
So six out of six 9019s wrote well out of the box. That's very impressive considering the price. What is the probability of getting six $700+ Viscontis to write well out of the box? ZERO!
Since I have successfully turned a 9019 into a .9 cursive italic, The next challenge will be to turn a 9019 fine nib into a flex nib. Enjoyable video as always. Cheers
I'd love to try flexing the pen. We have to thin out the wings and make some slits etc. I'd be interested in a needle point flex to practice spencerian. 😀
@@Shak-MD Already done. The first 9019 fine nib was an experiment and gave me the specs I needed to make the modifications for the second nib. I binned the first nib. The second nib performs flawlessly going from .7 to a full double broad. The tines return to their original position after flexing with no lift-off from the feed. Also there is no railroading. I performed the test on two full A4 pages of Rhodia.
Your video blew my mind big time. Would you be able to do a video on the nib swap from your montblanc 149 to the 9019? Very curious about that. I have the olive green and clear 9019s. Also the clear 9019 resembles the Delta Roma imperiale demonstrator with the exception of the clip. Also because you have successfully done the nib swap you really don't have to send your pen to Mont Blanc and pay for it to be serviced. I'm definitely on board with that. Also the nib unit on the 9019 is removable like the pelikan nibs ( sort of ) where you can switch from pen to pen on your jinblancs on whatever mood suits you.
Thanks. The new generation of 149s have friction fitted nibs that can easily be pulled out. The Jinhao also can be just pulled out.. the 149 nibs fit right over the Jinhao feed, which is how I did it. The older 149s need special tools to take the nib out. I do have the tools. I also have a video on how to take them out. LMK if any questions remain. 😀. BTW, my current favorite Jinblanc is a Jinhao 1935 with the 149 nib....absolutely amazing!
Just received my 9019 yesterday. It is a tad to thick for long writing, but the nib is writes beautifully. Love the transparent JinBlanc though. Beautiful nib.
Thank you. I hope you can find one. My advice is to get it around 150 or less, and make sure it is not modified, ground etc. They do sell them on Ebay---but the quality is not always guaranteed. I got through a friend in a pen show. Cheers!
This. I have a few now and I cannot stop using them. Some of the best daily writers I currently have. Ebay quality is ok, but if you can find a used one at a decent price, sending it to a nibmeister is a must. It will feel stellar after a tune.
@@Shak-MD Oh what? Looks like my wallet is about to get lighter! What size Pilot or Sailor nib? Is it the Pilot 10 or 15? I am not familar with Sailor nib sizes... It def sounds work a try!
Precisely, a Jinhao with a Montblanc nib. Like you see, it writes very impressively well. The same nib on the actual MB 149 is not that bouncy and perhaps not as pleasant to use objectively speaking. Mostly because I feel less comfortable exerting as much pressure on the actual 149 nib/feed on the pen, knowing how much of a pain in the back it is to take out the nib and fix it should it malfunction.
I agree. The steel has very little give, hence no scratch on the page. Soft nibs nees special engineering imo to avoid scratchy feeling on paper. Pilot and MB have it right, while Sailor, Leonardo, and Wingsung have not. IMO, of course. This may only be tru for I heavy handed people like myself. Cheers.
Excellent review, while I appreciate the increased ink capacity of this model, the lack of replacement nibs (in different nibs sizes) has been the cause of the hesitation. I have to ask, where did you order the paper you used from?
Thanks. I ordered from Amazon a while back. They don't sell anymore in loose form on amz. It is called Clairfontaine 90 GSM seyes [French] ruled paper. Some stores may still have it.
Thank you. I understand that wetness is not to everyone's liking. I personally use a dry pen for work documents and sometimes have to resort to a ballpoint. Do let me know if there is a specific pen you'd like to see.
Great point. It is somewhat of a misconception that modern 149s are hard. People generally mean in comparison to more vintage pens--which is correct---older 149s from 50s to 80s were much more flexible. Look at this video I made of a "semi flex" 149 from 70s, for example. This specific nib feels more flexible because it is in a different feed and collar unit. It is an 18K gold nib, which can be quite soft.
I have the clear demonstrater version of the Jinhao 9019 with a medium nib. Best pen and best nib in all of my modest collection of pens. The only nib that comes near is the B stub nib on my Pilot 78g.
It is actually mind-bending how good these cheap Jinhaos write :) If I were a student in high school or college, and someone gifted me one, I'd be super super pumped!!
What do you think about the EF nib? I want a nice smooth line, but not too wet. Is this really an EF nib or is it more like a medium or bold? I love the Jinhao pens but find that even the narrowest nib seems like a bold. I am getting ready to order this, but only if it is closer to actually being fine and not overly wet.
And I got it the other day. This is a fantastic pen!! And the EF really is EF. This is so perfectly balanced that it is very comfortable to write with, and to write with for a long while without tiring. I think it ought to be pen of the year too. I just made this my EDC pen. I got the transparent wine red one and love the way it looks. Really glad I got this!!
Does the feed of 9010 match the nib of 149? The feed of my 149 is slightly deformed. And, some of my 149s have problems with ink flow, very dry. Can it be solved by switching them to 9010s?
@@Shak-MD Thank you for the information. I bought four or five vintage 149, and half of them had the problem of ink flow. Not sure if it's because they haven't been used for too long, or aging of the ebonite feed
@will3521 The feed and nib need disassembled and cleaned. They are far far far, superior to the Jinhaos. I'd disassemble and clean the nib/feed. Or send them to "a friend" 😀
@@Shak-MD Thank you for your response. I also want to extend my appreciation for the effort and time you dedicated to reviewing for us. Please continue with your valuable contributions.
I do not find the 9019 girth objectionable at all with my medium-sized, violinist hands. The secret is to not grip it tightly and move your arm like a pantograph to produce beautiful cursive writing. That technique works for me…YMMV!
