Great review, I totally agree. Andrew Scott's performance is incredible. What he expresses through his eyes... and how he regresses to being a child around his parents despite being older than them... some of the dialogue is completely heartbreaking. Such a travesty this hasnt had more recognition because I think it's an important film for people to see.

This is a great review! The film is a masterpiece and very soon will be considered a classic. Andrew Scott should absolutely be on the Oscar list…as should Andrew Haigh, Paul Mescal, and possibly Claire Foy and Jamie Bell. An amazing film!

I totally agree. After seeing it, I was pretty shocked at the lack of Oscar nominations. Really stoked to see it again. Thanks for watching!

Spot on review! You hit all the major beats I would mention. I think it’s also important to mention how much this story transcends sexual preference. Anyone can relate to this. The solitude & loneliness the character Adam feels is relatable to anyone. For this reason, more people need to see it and not dismiss it as a queer-only story. And yes… one of the biggest Oscar snubs in academy history. Even the BAFTAs snubbed Andrew Scott when the film just would not have worked without his exceptionally affecting performance. All Of Us Strangers is my favorite film of 2023 and quickly becoming one of my all time favorites.

Weekend is definitely worth a watch and touches on some of the same themes. There are some wonderful conversations between the two leads that give some real moments of connection.

Great review! The diner scene is one of the most beautiful acted/directed/all around scenes I think I’ve ever seen. Devastating.

Perfect summarization. Beautiful movie. I’ve seen it a couple of times already. Breaks my soul each time. Even hearing you talk about it made me tear up again. Easily one of my favorite films of all-time. Just an emotional gut punch. For good and bad. ❤

Great discussion of the film! I watched it yesterday and it moved me deeply. The 4 main performances were all stellar. It had been a while since I saw Jamie Bell in a role, I really love his work as an actor. Claire and Andrew were so incredibly empathetic in their role, and Paul Mescal is a rising star. Definitely a high recommendation, I think this movie will only gather more and more praise over time.

Excellent review. This film was not what I expected. Can't shake the feelings and images after two days since watching.

Thank you for another insightful review of an important film that is, however, being marginalised in two significant ways. Firstly, Andrew Scott’s outstanding performance was seemingly snubbed by BAFTA’s anonymous diverse sub-committee, brought in to ensure full ethnic representation in the films chosen for member voting. Secondly, there’s Disney’s decision not to release the film on hard media - blu ray or dvd - but only as streamed content. Such actions will have a significant impact on the gay community. Both decisions are irresponsible, potentially homophobic, and will limit the audience for a masterpiece in which gay people are presented realistically and not as the stereotypes that normally exist in mainstream media. Such patronising films as BROS, for instance, are released on every media platform despite the image of gay people they present being false, reactionary, offensive and damaging to many in the community. Both Disney and BAFTA’s treatment of Andrew Haig’s film are unacceptable and should be called to account.

Just saw this recently. My god... I wasn't ready for that ending! It's disappointing that this film did not get any nominations from the Oscars.NOT ONE!! Not that I give too much credence to the Oscar awards, but it would help bring awareness to it. It would be a shame if this movie gets swept under the rug. It's brilliant.

As soon as I saw it I knew it needed a home in my physical collection, was so bummed to find out they won't do anything with it. Crossing my fingers a boutique label gets the rights to distribute it! It definitely deserves it.

I'm a gay man in my 40s who came out to my parents late. Adam almost felt like he could be another version of me. I'm also a professional writer going through life on my own. I went and saw this movie with my mom. I knew what it was about, she didn't. We were both destroyed by it but we also appreciated it so much. It's a crime that this remarkable film wasn't nominated. I have to wonder if it was ghettoized a bit. Maybe gay + fantasy + heavy is just too much still for the Academy. But unlike Adam, we can't go back and fix it, can we? Thanks for this review.

New subscriber after watching this review. I would totally recommend to check Andrew Haigh's filmography. I saw Weekend on 2011 and it was an unforgettable experience (I've seen it many times after that). I also enjoy listening to him on interviews. All the actors in this film are incredible, I'm looking forward to see Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley in the upcoming Netflix adaptation, such a dark character...I can see for the trailer that he nailed it!

Thanks for subscribing! I just started, so it’s nice to build this community up! I was gonna watch Weekend the other day, but ended up saving it for later. Definitely gonna check it out on your recommendation 👍 I didn’t know he was going to portray Tom Ripley in a new film! I’m interested in seeing how that’ll pan out.

@@WatchlistRoulette All of Us Strangers is his masterpiece but probably you're going to find some seeds on Weekend like loneliness in queer people. I love to witness the evolution of contemporary directors and to see actors like Mescal being discovered. I'm not really into trailers but I watched the Ripley one because I already read the novel and watched some film adaptations so I was not afraid of spoilers and let me tell you, Andrew Scott's eyes at the end frightened me and the cinematography looked gorgeous. Cheers from Spain, I hope my English is OK. I'll continue to watch your videos!

Great review. One of the best films I have seen for years. Excellent performances by everyone. It deserves all the awards under the sun. Totally heartbreaking how people suffer in this world, just because of who they are. Everyone should be ashamed of themselves. 🥰

i wasn’t planning on watching this one, mostly because the trailers didn’t really catch my eye & i’m still trying to catch up on some Oscar noms before the ceremony, but now i think i’ll check it out !! the way you described the loneliness & performances interests me in a way reading the description didn’t. the only thing i’ve seen Andrew Scott in is BBC’s Sherlock and while i thought he was good in the role, i don’t think he was given much to work with. i’m looking forward to his performance based on your review :) also this is kind of a silly question but i like to watch my movies seasonally and get bothered when i watch them in the wrong one. would you say Aftersun is more a summer or spring movie? I’m getting mixed answers and it’s going to bother me if i watch it in the wrong season after saving it for so long 😭😭
@WatchlistRoulette

I felt similarly about the trailers for this film. It struck me as something I might like, but I ended up appreciating it to a much higher degree! I would say Aftersun has no seasonal feel, but I guess technically summer would be the time. I watched it in the winter and still love it lol. I find it very interesting you watch by season, that’s really cool 👍

I'm just so disappointed. I hadn't head of this movie and saw it pop up on a music film clip. I made that mistake of looking it up and reading the ending. I wish so much I could erase my memory of reading that so I can watch it without knowing the ending.
