*Dedicated to: Ronald J. Munson DDS*
To be clear, this car has never been restored. It retains all the original paint which has been tested and verified with an electric paint meter. It retains the original interior which still has factory plastic on certain pieces. It retains the original matching numbers 2.4L Inline 6-cylinder engine and 4-speed manual transmission. It retains all the original stickers and factory paint marks. This car is at a higher level in quality then most restored Datsun 240Z’s but this car is original.
This magnificent 1971 Datsun 240Z Series 1 “Survivor” has 21,743 original miles and is truly unbelievable. It was owned by a father and son until 2019. It’s loaded with original documentation including the import paper and window sticker. It retains the original VIN plate on dash, VIN plate on door jam, glove box number sticker, engine plate on inner fender, paint code sticker on radiator support and all other miscellaneous stickers. This is the best survivor we’ve ever seen!
As the original window sticker documents this 1971 Datsun 240Z serial #HLS30U04684 was imported to the US at the Port of Entry in Baltimore, MD. It was delivered to Munson Datsuns located in Marion, IN on trunk D-51A. The engine number is #L240007463 and the color is #907. The exterior color is Racing Green and the interior is Brown. \The vehicle had the following options with charges: anti-freeze $3.00, tinted glass $30.00 and defroster $40.00. The factory suggested dealer D&H was $75.00 and local freight $83.00. The total suggested retail price was $3,757.00.
The Story
As documented on the original window sticker this car was delivered to Munson Datsuns located in Marion, IN. From the information gathered this car is a rare color combination of Racing Green and brown. It was allocated to the dealership for achieving sales volume. The owner of the dealership James R. Munson decided to keep the car for his son Ronald J. Munson. He told Ronald he would give it to him as graduation gift. It was displayed in the showroom until he graduated.
The exterior is in great original condition especially considering the car is almost 50 years old. It retains all the original sheet metal and paint. The original paint was tested and verified with an electric paint meter. The front windshield has an original inspection sticker from 1980. All of the exterior trim, rubber seals, drivers mirror, door handles, headlights, front bumper, taillights, rear bumper and emblems are also in excellent original condition. The car sits on the original wheels and the hub caps are in excellent condition. The wheels are wrapped with brand new Vredestein Sprint Classic 175 HR 14 tires that were ordered from Coker Tires by MS CLASSIC CARS. A set of vintage Western Wheel Turbine 14” wheels with Dunlop Sport A2 195-70-14 tires are included. These were the wheels and tires that were used on the car for many years. This car looks better than most cars that have been restored!
The original interior is in absolutely spectacular condition especially considering the car is almost 50 years old. It still retains the original factory plastic on the rear panels and seat belt holders. It also still has some of the original factory plastic behind the door arm rests. Everything in the interior is in working order such as the headlights, turn signals, horn, wipers, gauges, dash reading light, glove box light, cigarette lighter, rear window defroster, heat, power antenna and radio with signal seeking. This interior is untouched and in showroom condition!
The engine compartment is in great original condition especially considering the car is almost 50 years old. This engine compartment has never been touched cosmetically other than a good cleaning. All the original paint on the firewall, inner fenders, radiator support and under the hood is beautiful. The car is powered by the original matching numbers 2.4L Inline 6cyl engine that was factory rated with 150HP.

To those of us who love cars with a passion, nothing in life can compare to getting behind the wheel of a car we owned years ago. It is a time travel experience indeed. My first car was a 1977 280Z in white with tan interior, louvered read window, 4 speed. To this day just looking at pictures of the car makes me happy. How amazing it would be to own one again.

Having owned a 240Z for best part of 20 years, i can say this would be one of the most desirable 240Zs on the planet. You can't even restore an interior to look that good!! The Butterscotch (Tan) colour is highly desirable, as are all the other non black colours.

I had a red 1971 I purchased from original owner in 1977. Paid $2,500. Got it from a girl who weighed about 110 Lb. Seats were perfect and all interior was perfect. Dealer had added a factory air. Wish I still had it:)

So this is one of those oddball Z cars. When I first saw this was a 71 I didnt think much of it as long as it was early enough to be a series 1. Then I went to your website and noticed something very interesting. This is number 4684 and built in May/70. I own 4805 built in May 70. BUT mine is a 1970. My car was built "after" this one but is one manufacturer year older. This is actually not uncommon and many people have noted this before. I would strongly market this information as you sell it. The 70 cars are more valuable than the 71s but you have to accept that this should be a 1970. It makes for an argument that it is worth more just because this "error" for lack of better words. I think it can go for more than the $124,240 "franklin mint" 1970 that sold on BaT last June because its a perfect survivor. Good luck!

My 240Z is a 4/70 and for some reason was always registered as a 71. I would attempt to change the registration and title, but it's just not worth it. I call it a 1970 because it is.

Z-cars were attainable when new, uncommonly reliable for sports cars, and meant to be driven daily. I drove a similar 1974 260z all over the US, Canada, even to Alaska and back! Dramatically improved it with Weber carbs, Pacesetter header, 5 speed, KYB gas struts. Mine took me on countless adventures as the 3rd owner over 7 years. Pity this car's original owner: he/she never got to drive the wheels off of it. Also astounding is that these were just a little bit more money than a Mustang or Capri... guessing this car auctioned for 6 figures

I had one exactly like this one British green (code paint 907) 1971 with brown interior minus the exterior white stripes. Not sure these white stripes are stock. I can hear the same cracking noises coming from the interior. Serial number HSL 25 337. Had keep it from 1978 to 1991. Third gear was really fast. Got some tickets too.

Bought one brand new 1971. ($2700.00) Had to wait seven months for delivery. It was the first one in the area. There was a new car show in St. Louis and low and behold there it was up on a turn table. I stepped over the ropes, when the attendant said I couldn't go up to it. I told him who I was and asked for the keys. I opened it all up and checked it out. The attendant says we'll have it all ready for you first thing Monday morning. Took deliver, drove it out of the garage and it immediately dropped a valve down in the cylinder. The owner was called and he said to call later in the day to find out the details. I said, "Right, I'll have my lawyer call". OH!, MR. ____________ wait, here take my car. A 1971 Fiat 124 2&2 Sport. When I did get the car back some six months later I was sorely disappointed, poor pick-up and a clunky transmission. The next year model was seven hundred dollars more. They gave me full price for it. Drove it for a year for free. I switched back to the Fiat.
