I'm now confused because I was taught the preposition 'on' is used for any event like 'on my birthday', ' on Diwali' and why do we use "to" with music or songs? "When I was 10 I would dance to music " I'll really be grateful if you clear my conception.

Diwali or birthdays are 'events' that happen, hence we use 'on'. For example, "I got this gift ON my birthday (on that particular day)". When you dance TO music, you are reacting TO the beats of music, it is not an event. Hence when the music plays, you react by dancing TO the beats of it.
